My NEW DIY Truck Camping build tour! Lithium battery upgrade, 12v fans, fridge, and it's solar ready

After several years with my old build, it was time for a fresh new start. I incorporated new lithium battery power for all of my 12v accessories such as a fridge and diesel heater. I also added a unique 12v fan system that's integrated into the build for better summer time comfort. Check it out!

This is such a simple and well thought out build. I like how you redesigned it to fit your needs. The diesel heater buit into floor is perfect aswell as the computer fans. I would do a build very similar to this if i didnt have my little truck camper. My truck camper has a very similar setup to yours with being inside a small camper. I might even build in some small computer fans around the sleeping area to keep me cool in the summer.

Planning on doing a build in my truck bed in the next few months and I am telling you now I am stealing like 90% of what you have done. The electronics setup is too clean and compact for me to not copy, I do plan on running 2 batteries though but even in your space it seems you could have easily fit a 2nd if needed. love the 2X2 build for the framing, I am a bigger guy but structurally I feel as if I can still get away with it. You could add a $12 changeover switch to the battery input for your inverter, and run wire to your truck battery for the "B" connection of the changeover switch. That way, with no extra cost beyond the switch, wires and a fuse, you could turn on the truck, then flip the changeover switch, plug the 110V inverter output into your battery charger, and recharge your lithium battery off your truck's alternator at any time. Your electric power would be limited only by your gas tank at almost no additional build cost using the great set up you already have. That assumes your charger does not pull more than the 500W your inverter can handle, which is almost certainly the case. If you don't want to mess with the wire through the truck, you could do it externally with wire with jumper cable clips on one end.

You have a nice build and you built it for you to use. Awesome. 👍 As far as running lights, charging devices, inverter and running a fridge...You can run on an AGM battery. I ran all those items except I ran two fridges. I also had a microwave available for use on a 1500 watt inverter. But did not use it on this trip. I did a quick build in the back of my truck so I can attend the Overland Expo West 2022. I arrived Monday 05/16/2022 and left the following Monday morning 05/23/2022. Awesome time. good people, and an awesome event. All I have so far is a Redarc smart battery isolator (SBI) to charge the auxiliary battery from the alternator when the truck was running. While parked, I have a 160 watt, 18 volt solar panels w/charge controller. 12 volt, 100 Ah AGM battery. I did have a couple of mishaps, but they were operator error. Once fixed, I had no other issues. everything ran fine. However, while at the expo, I did purchase a Redarc dc to dc charger. Just got it today (5/27/2022). Will have it installed before my next trip out (before fathers day). With the Readarc charger (MPPT Charging), I can eliminate the solar charger (PWM charging). Wish I could show you my quick build out and set up. 😎 If you are going to run a large inverter, and your auxiliary battery can be charged from your alternator, I would recommend starting your vehicle while using the inverter. Also I would upgrade the Renogy Wanderer charge controller (PWM) to a MPPT charger. The PWM is an older technology, while the MPPT is newer and maybe better for your lipo battery. I'm not an expert, but I least look in to it.

Something to consider is putting the bed on the passenger side. Then you can go as high as you want on the cabinet side without obstructing your rearward vision. I have a set up I built for a Project M camper that has the large windows on the sides. The buddy wanted a second bed single width. We did it on the passenger side. On the drivers side we have a TV and gaming console for his boy to mess around with and they can use the bed like a sofa to watch movies. I also built drawers under the bed for 48” with shelving in the front of the bed accessed from the middle of the camper. They have still tweaked it to fit their needs as they learn, but they are really glad they can see outside of the passenger window in the city. To each their own of course. I like this 2x2 build and they are strong enough for sure. I went the cabinet way so it’s all plywood and glue & pocket screws reinforcing the joints. Many different ways to build them. I got lazy for my personal camper and have a Rayzr that has a simple bed/dining set up with a kitchen, hot water and added my own wall AC unit. I have a F150 with the 2.0 kw Pro Power Onboard and that runs everything. Saves having to set up an elaborate wiring set up. The 100ah Lithium based set up in this build really is nice!!

You can do it! Basic 12v wiring is pretty simple and there are some good references online. It gets a little more complicated when it comes to solar and big inverters but it's all doable. Make sure your wire size is appropriate for what you are doing.

New sub, good video. Just scored a truck cap for $100. It does not match my truck, but I am already planning my build off of your videos. I really like your 2.0 box and will be very helpful in my build. I am an avid fisherman, and have 7.5’ rods to figure out how to get them in my 6.5’ bed. I don’t have a lockable rod box on my boat so my idea is either a slanted rack or hanging them from the cap ceiling.

I think that will work. I seldom shore fish so my gear always rides in the boat. When I do transport rods without the boat, I lay them on the passenger front floor and over the center console into the back seat. Even my 7' rods fit this way. Probably wouldn't work if the truck is full of gear though. Good luck on the build and thanks for the sub!

Your first build was really good, but this one is great! I really like the additions! One question, is there a specific reason that you made your sleeping platform so tall? Most people have them just above the wheel well. Here’s a suggestion on powering your fridge, I wired mine to one of the switches so I don’t need to plug and unplug it, I just turn a switch on. You do have a couple spare switches front and back that you could hook up to. Thanks for the great video!

A high bed allows for more gear storage underneath but sacrifices ability to sit up in bed. I use a folding chair alongside the bed for sitting.

I love the setup so much I'm using it as a model for my own setup. You mentioned you made it so it was removeable, but how do you remove the heater? Do you have quick connects or the intake and exhaust? Or do you just work around it?

The heater is bolted to a turret plate that I bought off eBay. It's fairly quick to unbolt and remove the intake/exhaust pipes. Most times however, I just slide the box over the top of it and leave it. During the summer, I take the heater and fuel tank out so that's a non issue. Thanks for watching.

I try my best to seal it up before building. Unfortunately, dust gets in there still. I keep a small rechargeable hand vacuum with me and it makes getting rid of the dust a pretty easy task. Thanks for watching.

Great setup, I just run a hot from my truck battery and installed one of those on/off switches like you have turn it on while traveling it keeps both batteries charged and then I turn it off when camping so I don't drain from my truck.

Lithium definitely has an advantage for a build but there are a few quirks that throw a wrench in things.

Careful charging your Lithium from your alternator/ truck battery. You could burn out the alternator since the lithium has low resistance. Use a DC-DC charger that Renogy makes. This will limit the power at a safe level. Some of these DC-DC chargers will even sense when the truck is off and prevent draining the starter battery.

No. I build it like that purposely so I can store a 5 gallon pain under it. Still plenty of room for sleeping comfortably. If I want to sit, I have a short chair back there that works very well. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching. The wiring is all contained inside the box. There are no connections to the truck itself. The battery should be removed first due to weight but that's really it. Diesel heaters really have no smell unless you spill during a fill up (this has happened) but overall they are a great device. Links to most of the parts are in my first build video. I carried over many of the components from that one.

Thanks for stopping by. You absolutely can charge the battery from the truck's alternator. The issue for me is I'm using a lithium battery. Typically lithium takes a different charger than lead or AGM batteries. I don't think it would play nice with the truck. If you used a lead battery, you would be fine. Lead batteries just don't last as long as lithium and they're much heavier. My 100ah lithium weighs about 20 lbs. A 100ah lead battery is 60+ lbs. The diesel heater exhaust is vented through the floor and out the back of the truck.

Awesome build, how many days can you run the battery/frig/heater/electronics before needing to recharge the battery?

On the lithium, probably 3-4 days. In the middle of summer when it's extremely hot back there and the fridge is working constantly, a little less. I've had the fridge itself run for 5-6 days in cooler weather.

Sweet build!! How did you go about keeping dust out of your truck cap?

I sealed up the bed rails as best I could before setting the cap on. I also installed a tailgate seal. Sticky back weather stripping from amazon meant for tailgate use. Works just ok. Dust still finds it's way in. I clean it out every so often to keep it somewhat dust free. Thanks for watching!

Hey Dakota, thank you for such a thorough tour of your truck camper. I just got off Amazon where I found so much of what you talked about. I have three questions. Which diesel heater did you buy? And which SAE connectors did you buy? What Amp of shore power inlet plug did you buy? There is so much info on each it these it is confusing. I appreciate any help you can give me on these. It looks like he changed his heater. He originally used that one (which doesn't come with a remote) and now uses one of the models that does come with a remote.

I'm sorry, I completely missed this comment. When a bunch come through at the same time, they are easy to miss. The diesel heater I bought was a 2KW Vevor off eBay. It ran all winter long on camping trips without a single hiccup. Shore power inlet plug is 15a I believe but I'd have to double check. SAE plugs/pigtails were a generic off Amazon but I found them with 10 awg wire. Most have 12 or 14. I think what I need to do is a video with more specifics on a lot of the components I used. Maybe link the exact items in the description if people are looking for them. Thanks for watching!

It's the same one. It came with a remote but I never used it at first. One day I decided to try it out and I'm glad I did. It's pretty slick adjusting the temp with the push of a button.

Everything is fused except the main wire going into the switch. Yes your loads are fused, but your supply is not. A fusible link would be a good idea.
