Looking forward to seeing the terraced food forest take shape. We have grasshoppers too and planted tons of canna Lilly as a sacrifice forage for the hoppers to keep them off the forest. It works pretty well for us. Our food forests are very intensively planted. I have an update video dropping tomorrow. 👊

are you growing any currants? man ive been growing my currants for around 10yrs not and its so crazy how you in the spring you just cut off a bunch of branches the size of a pencil or bigger if you want, stick them in the ground and boom like 90% success rate at taking root! plus super high in antioxidants i love plants that are easy to grow and replicated

I'm in a similar situation dealing with long distances to resources, I'd consider using your brush piles for much by buying a tractor mounted wood chipper. I'm using deep litter in my chicken coop and allowing it to rest in wire fence baskets for future fertilizer. I just completed a 8ft x 3ft worm bin for castings.

When I was growing up we had an issue with grasshoppers. My dad put down a bait that contained a spore that killed the grasshoppers and then when other grasshoppers ate the dying ones the spore killed them too. It worked really well and we didn’t have any grasshoppers for years off of one treatment.

If you put a cake layer on top of another cake layer, you have an abscission zone in between and in response to a shove you can get a slide at the junction or fracture zone. With dirt, if you dump a layer of dirt on top of another, it can shift and slide at the intermediate contact zone (depending on the forces applied over the years). For insurance, you can dump on layers or lifts of 6-8 inches at a time, interplowing the new into the old underneath, so that the soil structure is like interlaced fingers and not sliding palms (for another analogy).
@jackieow Жыл бұрын
@@marzupalami If he adds a foot or two of topsoil and mixes it in by interplowing, it will be more into the growth zone of the tree roots. And as topsoil be more available via putting nutritional goodies down a little deeper. Interplowing is just cheap insurance to prevent sliding as well. This is thus a two-for-one deal. As to layer sliding, like you probably won't get in an accident today, but it costs very little to wear a seat belt just in case.

Glad you are building big food forest as I ‘m doing at my frontyard.I learned from Robert Guyton in RIVERTON NZ who have been growing his forest garden for last 30 years, that it’s better to begin by growing shelter plants of any kinds at first.
@dhansonranch Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Your thought process makes sense to me save for the "retaining wall" of the flat areas - will it be planted as well or will it be left with its existing soil to populate with what will. I was thinking things like blueberries etc would be beneficial on those slopes. I am curious about the affect of spring frosts on the trees at the bottom, but I am sure you have thought of that. Will be interesting to see how it finishes out. I just finished doing a much smaller scale one that I did with shovel and wheel barrow that incorporates annual garden vegetables besides the perennials.

Hügelcultures can be a huge problem in a food forest as it provides vole habitat and they love to gnaw on tree roots :/. Also, once things break down "air gaps" are created which might be weird for the trees to establish in? Maybe.
