My New Greenhouse: Introducing & Constructing

This is kinda long. The first part is my introduction of the greenhouse. The rest of it documents the construction of the greenhouse. This isn't really a "how-to", but it would probably be a good assistance if you are building one. The kit was purchased at Harbor Freight.
This video has been helpful to many in constructing the 6' x 8' Kit Greenhouse sold by Harbor Freight. ( One Stop Gardens - Item#69714 ). I have no affiliation with Harbor Freight. This is just my experience putting their product together.

Thanks for making this video. I received this little greenhouse for my birthday last year and due to current events we were not able to put it up right away. It was in storage all winter but when we finally pulled it out yesterday the instructions were destroyed :( I found your video and my husband was able to put it together :) He does much better with watching and doing than reading poorly constructed manuals anyway. Julie Dever I'm going to do a "How's it holding up" type video soon. Last night in our high winds I had to put a bungee on the door because the wind kept blowing it open. I have two small ceramic heaters in there so I had to make sure the doors stayed shut to keep the heat in.

Thank you for putting this video together. It helped tremendously to be able to see the orientation of the various pieces as the went together. It was a lifesaver for me. I went ahead and added Teks #12 x 3/4" corrugated roofing screws to all the panels to help with wind loads. 4 on each panel and those things aren't coming off at all.

+Blake “Daddykirbs” Kirby, I have never had a greenhouse and I was hoping that you could provide me with some insight. The greenhouse I built (all thanks to your instructional video), 6 x 8 is a great deal. I was thinking about putting a silicone bead around the panels to help improve the heat/humid conditions. I am not certain if sealing the panels would negatively impact the purpose of a greenhouse. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Also I just purchased some chives, leaks, green and red bell peppers, cilantro, jalapenos, romaine lettuce and tomatoes (Better Bush and Big Boy) for the greenhouse. I would really love to hear any suggestions you have on how to grow the vegetables inside a greenhouse as well as transplanting and what size containers you recommend. From all of the videos I watched on youtube, I consider you the best and I truly appreciate your knowledge as well as patience. I want to thank you in advance for your input Kirby, Raymond Newberry...... P.S. I am not sure if this is relevant (climate and wind conditions) but I live in Middle Tennessee.

Raymond Newberry Wow, I'm the best? That's a great compliment. There are far better gardeners out there for sure, but I'll take a stab at your questions. I know of several people that have used some sort of sealant to make the panels more secure on the greenhouse. I see no problem with this. I haven't done it, but that's probably just because I tend to forget to do things :) The main purpose for my greenhouse is seed starting in the Spring and overwintering potted plants. I've never used it for a primary growing space. In your climate it may be more appropriate, but here in TX it is way too hot to grow inside that space to grow anything in the Summer. Your Chives, Leeks and Lettuce may appreciate a cooler space than the greenhouse, but again... I don't know what your greenhouse temps will be in your area. I think your Peppers and Tomatoes may be fine. Keep an eye on your temps inside the greenhouse. If it gets too hot in the Summer you could throw over some shade cloth and keep the vents open. Are you going to grow in pots or are you building raised beds inside? I'm glad you are growing your own! :)

Blake Kirby lol... nothing broken... fused a joint in the heel to fix arthritis. three stainless steel screws and i should be as good as new in awhile. i'm only 5 foot tall... so you can see the problem with the roof... and i built the thing about a foot from the house... so i don't know how i will be able to reach them.

Video helped a lot saved me from making a lot of mistakes and headaches which I would have had without this frame took me about 5 hours with a helper to hold things up and screw some nuts and bolts! I elevated mine as well, but to elimenate having to step up over a high threshold I have the base wall cut the width of the door and converted teh door to a hinged door, also cutting the base plate and bottom door frame. I attached mutiple sheets of heavy visquine that hang from teh bottom of the door to fill the gap under the door. Also, because it's not the most sturdy greenhouse in the world, when I constructed my shelving units I anchored the 2x4's I used as the upright shelving supprts to the lower base wall, then also screwed the aluminum framing of the greenshouse to those 2x4's making the whole thing a lot more sturdy. I have 2x4's that run horizontally that act as teh rear support for my shelving pushed rught up against the plastic panes and ran a small screw through each plastic pane into the 2x4 and did similar supports on the ends. This way the plastic panes cannot blow out. My greenhouse has been through some extreme winds with no troubles.

I put one of these together as well (what a challenge). I used aluminum tape on the inside of the greenhouse to help hold the panels (in addition to clips on outside), it is strong, water resistant, and reflective. Not to mention it is much easier than caulking, and you can remove it to replace panels with ease. I applied the tape mainly because mild wind seemed to bleed right into the structure making it nearly impossible to heat. The other problem i have had is the door is pretty lousy and gets hard to open sometimes. I used a brick to wedge against it from the outside forcing it closed so the weather stripping could do its job on cold nights.

DOOR: Here is what I found on the door. Mine was clearly dragging at the bottom. First, one of the screws on the very bottom of the door side frame was in wrong, it was in the slot of the black “bottom slider” below the hole, not in the hole. Second, the bottom door frame needed to be as low as possible. The holes in the side frame are slots, but if the bottom isn’t adjusted to max, the side frames drag on the lower track. If you take the door off and look at the bottom, take a straight edge or stiff wire and set onto little rollers (look like pulleys) the straight edge needs to clear the bottom of the side frame so when the door is in place, the side frame is is above and not touching the track. My door is not perfect, but now, much better. I am also concerned about the track bending from being stepped on and may look into support under it, but the support needs to not interfere with the bottom slider.

We recently bought this exact greenhouse from Harbor Freight. And you video saved our lives with putting it up. The written instructions were so bad, we hardly used them. I see many others have stated this problem. If so, how did you fix the problem?

These types of replies keep me motivated to continue sharing :) When I was finished building mine I had about 10 clips left over. I felt like I didn't need them. After one good wind storm I had a few panels scattered in the yard. I put them back in and secured all the panels with the leftover clips. Since then... no problems.

Regarding framing the base here's what I did: (4) 4x4x8 cut (2) to 75" and cut (2) to 911/2" assembled as DaddyKirby shows. I added 2x10" for extra height on top of the 4x4's and was glad we did as I'm 5'8' and feel just setting the frame on the ground or even on the 4x4's would have been too low. I would also like to thank DaddyKirb's for a great video, with my iPhone on my work table to guide us, total assembly was about 4hrs.
