0:51 I remember in high school, the first time I ever saw a rotifer, it was the most mind-blowing thing. Moments like these are why I went to school for biology.

Every time I get the notification from this channel that a new video was posted, I'm pretty sure my brain releases dopamine. This space gives me hope. You starting yet another project, on top of a million others, to explore another kind of beauty to be found in the world - that gives me hope. Hope that some kid somewhere stumbles upon a video of microorganisms and ends up with Nobel for chemistry. Hope that a young girl will watch an Eons video and fall in love with prehistoric beings, only to spend the rest of her life chasing the biggest misteries of this Earth's past. Hope that a young boy who has grown up in poverty uses your SciShow videos to engage the third graders from his community that he's trying to give back to about what the world is like outside of their immediate experience. This is the kind of hope the space you have created gives me. Thank you.

Yo what timing! And I'm so glad someone else is nerdy about tiny living things! My final project for Storyboarding was inspired by volvox algae. I thought they were neat because they seem like a weird in-between of a single celled and multi-cellular organism, making for an interesting candidate when studying community and that community's environment. Also they're just the weirdest looking things lol. I learned that microorganisms make great character inspiration.

Definitely subscribing to Journey to the microcosmos! I love microbiology and learning about micro organisms... especially how viruses evolve... for some reason it just mystifies me how something microscopic can completely disable a human body and adversely affect us in ways that can even be lethal at times. How can things so tiny have so much impact on overall health? I also love learning about our microbiome and about all the things the good bacteria in our guts do to not only keep us healthy but functional. We couldn't even properly digest food without them. For instance, I always knew fiber was important for digestive health, but it turns out, the reason it's so important is that it feeds the bacteria that cleans the lining of our digestive tract & intestines.

Some kids watch Disney movies on repeat, but when I was a kid I watched Nature documentaries (in between reading books). This really reminds me of the segment in Nature S4 E14 "Death Trap", when they looked at the water wheel plant with tiny bladders snapping shut on water fleas. Hank's voice is nearly as pleasant to listen to as George Page's was then. That episode is here on KZbin, for anyone interested; its otherworldly music and creative presentation of carnivorous plants and the way they prey on critters was a key influence on my growth. I think this has the potential to do the same for another generation!

part of me finds it extremely disconcerting how, well... uh, physical we are. It makes you worry how much of you is "you." I'm more okay with the weird invisible critters that exist because of us though if only because, frankly, they're as much a part of your body as your own cells anyway, given how much they're specifically adapted to the environment that is you. There are a lot of silly metaphors you can make with comparisons, but as far as our own go, if they haven't tried to kill you yet, you can probably trust them.
