I have terrible news for the many of you saying that it is possible to fully sterilize a sponge by microwaving it: www.nytimes.com/2017/08/04/science/sponges-bacteria-microwaving-cleaning.html (That said, sponges do not generally transmit diseases; I am just a bit ... irrational on this front.) In my experience, if you allow the dish sponge to dry completely you prolong it's life by increasing the amount of time before stink sets in... This may be easier for single people who may not have a full sink of dishes to wash every day... Also, once a sponge is past it's usefulness in the kitchen, I usually get some more use out of it in the bathroom... Full disclosure, I am not in the least concerned with bacteria and never have been... Thanks to the US Military, I had to spend most of my 20s exposing myself to as much yuck as possible to rebuild my immune system...

William Remsen physics/lever mechanics. It works the same way a bottle opener does. You slip the edge of your ring under the edge of the bottle cap, curl you ring finger over the cap and lift from your wrist. Depending on the tightness of the cap you may have to readjust if your finger feels like it might snap off. Also, It does tend to ruin/roughen the edge of the ring after repeated uses but a price to pay for amazement.

This is beautiful. You have managed to provide small tidbits of wisdom but also highlight how the smaller things that our loved ones bring into our lives, like clean sheets, art filled walls, and improved cleaning methods act as small portals through which light shines into the darkness. PS: It would appear that there is a direct correlation between The Anthropocene Reviewed and an increased frequency of my favorite heart-warmingly thoughtful John Green moments. Thanks for everything!

I am amazed about the Katchadourian portraits. I'm googling it right now. Also you made me want to clean my sheets because it has been a while, since I moved (4-5 months) that I haven't cleaned them and I just remembered how it feels when I'm at somebody's and they offer me a bed with clean sheets. That is SO true about clean sheets! Also, getting into a nicely made bed brings the fresh sheets to a whole other level! I’ve only skipped making my bed a few times in my adult life, and I’m so much happier climbing into a made bed with fresh sheets than just a bed with fresh sheets. It’s truly one of the greatest gifts my mother taught me.

Not the dishwasher! You gotta microwave your sponges to sterilize them! But I guess regularly replacing is good advice regardless. :)
@driverjayne5 жыл бұрын
Also microwaving a damp sponge (NEVER microwave a dry sponge it will catch on fire) does double duty in also loosening all the gunk on your microwave that you can then just wipe right off. But be careful, your sponge will be hot.
@JoinTheMadVender5 жыл бұрын
@@driverjayne Oh, yeah. Obviously. Thanks. I shouldn't assume people wouldn't microwave dry sponges. xD
@wiebkejohanna96215 жыл бұрын
I feel like this might be disappointing, but even microwaving your sponge wont sterilize it. It will only make room for the really disgusting bacteria the microwave won't kill.
@JoinTheMadVender5 жыл бұрын
@@wiebkejohanna9621 You could actually submerge it in water and let it boil for a bit? But yes, this shouldn't be an alternative for replacing the sponges regularly.
@wiebkejohanna96215 жыл бұрын
@@JoinTheMadVender There is this paper on it and it says: Sanitation by boiling or microwave treatment has been shown to significantly reduce the bacterial load of kitchen sponges19, 21 and can therefore be regarded as a reasonable hygiene measure. However, our data showed that regularly sanitized sponges (as indicated by their users) did not contain less bacteria than uncleaned ones. Moreover, “special cleaning” even increased the relative abundance of both the Moraxella- and Chryseobacterium-affiliated OTUs (Fig. 3B). Presumably, resistant bacteria survive the sanitation process and rapidly re-colonize the released niches until reaching a similar abundance as before the treatment (Fig. 6A). This effect resembles the effect of an antibiotic therapy on the gut microbiota40, 41, and might promote the establishment of higher shares of RG2-related species in the kitchen sponges. If you want to look it up, the link is www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-06055-9 Their conclusion was to keep the sponges as clean as possible, but change them once a week, as they probably get yucky pretty quickly. So I think you're right and cleaning and replacing them is the superior method

Looking for Alaska, Alternate ending I loved your book, but it could have been even more spicy. It should have ended with Alaska surviving the crash and she crawled in the woods because she was paralyzed from the waist down. They had a closed casket funeral because her dad was in on it. Sadly though Jake committed suicide which would be the only downside the the ending.

I bought an obnoxious amount of prints at Otakon this past weekend. I promise it helps. I remember last year I had the thought, "By technicalities, I spend the most time in this room compared to any other room in my life. It's *my room*. I should make it like me." I vowed to be more unapologetically myself than ever before. I've lost some people and had annoying disputes about some of my actions and traits, but it's brought more amazing people to and closer to me than ever before as well as having grown over just this year. It's amazing how much décor can help.
