One piece of advice. Check that the Alternator belt isn't fraying, because lots of these ended up with a head gasket blown and the head warped. There was a recall in some parts of the World for a misalignment issue on the belt pulleys. I bought mine with a dead engine because of this, knowing I could repair it and get a cheap car. The pulleys were over 1mm out of line, and I machined the crankshaft pulley and made spacers for the alternator to get it right. It's done 60K miles since that. It died after 58K miles originally. The problem is that the belt fails and the Alternator light comes on. People don't realise that the water pump isn't working any more and don't stop immediately.

It's an automated manual because there is no space for a third pedal. That's why even in Europe only the automated manual version exists until the 3rd or 4th generation Smart.
@grazz78652 ай бұрын
They could put a third pedal if necessary. There’s more room in the cockpit than people think. The automated manual came from the 1970s beetle. It made a much better selling point to push it off as an “automatic “ since a higher percentage of women prefer a smaller car. But not to be sexist, either a woman or a man may not know how to drive stick shift or simply prefer an automatic. The entire purpose of the manual transmission is to increase fuel economy. Me personally-I think this car would have been perfect coupled with a CVT transmission.

My wife has a 2013 smart car and while it does draw attention, we occasionally get the naysayers-“omg you’re gonna die in that thing in an accident “. “That thing is too small”. The line that goes around the doors is the roll cage. Very impressive thick hunk of steel going around the whole car. Check the production tag on the door. That little car comes in at 2750 pounds. True, you get no respect on the road but it is a safe car.

They’re pretty easy to find (Craigslist, etc). EXCELLENT city car. My wife has a 2013 and for the parking alone it’s worth every penny. We purposely look for the ass that took two spots because by doing that it opens a spot big enough for the smart car😂. One thing that you need to prepare yourself for is the automated manual transmission. They put a manual transmission on them (except the all electric) but the car does all the clutching and shifting-you just put it in drive. However, you’ll notice that it acts a lot differently than a regular automatic transmission. You need to listen to the engine and/or watch the tachometer to know when it’s about to shift. Take your foot off the gas and let the car do what it needs to do (within a second or two). It will shift much smoother. Dealers either don’t know about mechanics of it or don’t care and never explain this. Customers think there’s a problem and get upset.
@jc-pj3nh8 ай бұрын
When you start off , just press the gas pedal about 1 inch, hold it there and the car will accelerate and shift thru the gears smoothly and you will be amazed how quickly it will accelerate thru the gears. If you stomp on it, it will surge snd shift like sh#t.
@grazz78652 ай бұрын
Good point! It’s an automated manual transmission so yes, you’re right, if you stomp on it, the computer basically has to “disconnect” the gas (I would imagine, the ECM simply cuts off the fuel injectors), allows the RPMs to drop (like a manual transmission), shift to the next gear, then give you the gas back. For smoother shifting, take your foot off the gas when it’s about to shift. It will fly through all 5 gears. Note-as you said, when you first take off, it’s basically just to get the wheels rolling. The first shift is like 6mph😂

I'm looking at getting one of these. Do they feel roomy in the driver's seat? I'm worried I'll feel clauster phobic.
@jqonthego10 ай бұрын
Hey! At 5’11, I felt like I had a good amount of room! The steering wheel doesn’t move up and down, but the seat did slide forwards and backwards, with a backrest adjustment. The seat didn’t move upper down either. I would definitely recommend finding one local to you and driving it, as that will allow you to see your comfortability level with the size of the car. The transmission is a bit jerky, and there isn’t too much power which are items to be considered as well.

It will be exclusively for in town use only I just need something to get me up the street and back safely. Chances are I won't exceed 25 mph /No freeway. I just bought the exact same car same model year. My car also had 97,000 miles on it when I bought it. I would be interested in ANY video you might have on this. I just changed the cabin air filter (it was almost blocked). On the way home from the dealer the ESP and ABS lights both came on and would not go off. However, when driving around my neighborhood, the lights both went out. My guess is that it is the switch in the brake box under the car. I would really be interested in seeing the brake job video you are thinking about. Keep us up to date. Thanks.

Check the harness under the passenger seat. A lot of times, people are reaching under there looking for the handle to move the seat or dropped something under there. It’s real easy to dislodge the harness which will turn on the ABS and airbag light.

@jqonthego10 ай бұрын
It depends on where you’re driving, personally my first car was a big station wagon! The smart car is slow, and the brake pedal is on traditionally set up, as it’s attached to the floor, and not the top of the dashboard. I drive the car like it’s a motorcycle, as a lot of people don’t see you in there blind spots. In terms of a first car, they’re cheap to ensure, economical, easy to park, and a bit of fun to drive! It will allow the driver to practice judgment calls, and understand their size in relativity to the others on the road. It depends on how often the car would be used and how long of trips. I hope this info is helpful!
