My New (to me) 1967 Mercury 39 (3.9 hp) Kicker from Marketplace - Part 1 of 6

I’m excited about this find since I have been wanting a small trolling motor for my boat and this old Mercury will look really nice next to my 115 hp Mercury once I clean her up and give it a paint job.

Just got one just like this for almost nothing, hoping to put it on my inflatable dinghy. Thank you for documenting your work, I don't have spark on mine, but hoping I can fix it up and come back to your videos once I'm further along my restoration.

How’d it go? I have one as well that I just got on a 14’ Jon and trailer for $600 cash. Figure he paid *me* for it basically once I sell the boat for $500 and trailer for another $750 painted and lit up.

Allen Lovell … try www.marineengine.com they list the coil as “Available to order” at $180.17 + Shipping. eBay is showing new and used coils for this model as well.

I'm looking at one of these and he only wants $100 for it but knows absolutely nothing about it. Even if it does or can run... My first boat and motor ever. What u think?

Personally I would but just be prepared to spend some time and money on getting it to run if it’s been sitting along time. Great little motors. It’s been several weeks and I’m still waiting on a power head gasket to reassemble mine. Thanks for watching and commenting. Make sure you check compression, a good engine will be around 110 psi and that it has spark. If not don’t bother with it.

They call them "Iron Seahorses" for their look but also their toughness. These are great motors if you get one that hasn't been abused. This is a '67, by the decals. They were 3.9's till 1969, then they were 4.0's. They were gutsy, definitely put out more than 4 hp. Standard price for years now for a decent one has been in the $200-250 neighborhood. So if you get one for $100, you're doing well. I had a couple friends as a kid on the lake we lived on, that had these on 12 footers. They would easily plane off two kids in the boat. And run all weekend on the 3-gallon tank ☺️

@@jonboatmorava9115 I wouldn’t think it will start. The manual says it needs 110 psi for a healthy motor. Maybe the rings are just stuck. You could try to use Mercury’s version of “Ring Free” and see if it helps.

leslie jell I’m… I purchase my parts mostly from www.marineengine.com but you can obtain the part numbers for your motor from this website and search eBay for the same parts for less. This motor should be 110 psi for compression. What was your reading?

Can you elaborate how best to spin these flywheels with a drill? Does it have to be some kind of special bit so you don’t mess your wrist or the nut up? Thanks! I have the same motor but it’s a 25th anniversary edition so I think mines a ‘66

74 Nova… I just used a 1/2 “ drive Milwaukee variable speed drill motor with a 6” extension. I had to cut off the female end of the extension in order to get it to fit into the Chuck of the drill. The drill has a removable handle so you can hold it with two hands to keep from twisting your wrists.

Will if fire over in neutral this way as well, or does it have to be in gear for any reason? Sorry I’m pretty sure i know it doesn’t but don’t want to mess this old girl up at all. So strange that the recoil is built into the cowl. Makes for a more troublesome troubleshooting!

74 nova… I would keep it in neutral to start it. It will probably start in gear but I didn’t try it. Your right about the pull start recoil, it’s a bit of a pain to use the drill method.

Well I was just given this beautiful. Motor and its siezed up cant get the motor to spin and also cant get the shifter to shift

Pull the leg off and see if the motor will spin. The leg might be locking up the motor.
