I’m American. I’ve lived in several other countries previously. It is SO HARD when you can’t speak the language (my own fault). When I returned home, I never EVER judged someone for their attempts at English. In fact, I will go out of my way to help people when I hear them struggling in English, because I know how it feels!! Brian, my immigrant family came to the US from Europe in the late 1940s. They spoke Dutch, German and French but IMMEDIATELY immersed themselves in the English language. By themselves. On their own. Today, there is Literacy Volunteers of America all throughout the US. I used to volunteer in metro-Phoenix. Lots of Spanish speaking there. But never did a Spanish speaker show up to learn English!
