My Nikon Z8 & Z9 Settings For Sports Video

Jack, thank you for the settings to try. I use a Z8 to shoot photos of granddaughters' soccer and field hockey. I have been hesitant to shoot video but after watching your video, I am looking forward to learning/shooting some video of the games. Again, thank you.

Hopefully my shots make it to your inbox. West Texas A&M allowed me to come down and shoot basketball and baseball just to try it out. I started last season with a Fuji XH2s but graduated to a Z8 this year. Amazing camera. A Z9 would've been a little better with the dual CFX B slots and grip, but I did ok. Well, you'll maybe tell me that lol. Thanks for your videos and tutorials. I learned quite a bit from you.

Do you know if the HLG you’re recording in is 4.2.0 or 4.2.2?

Firmware 5.0 doesn't offer that video setting. Are you on a lower firmware version? The current setting is H.235 10-bit SDR

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm on firmware 5.0 on the Z9 and I'm looking at H.265 10 bit (MOV) in N-Log. You can also set it for SDR and HLG.

@@JackBeasleyMedia, in my 5.0 firmware, it is H.265 (MOV) SDR . N-log isn't a choice. Perhaps your is a Z8 setting?

Jack, do you think that the z8 is fast enough for high school sports? I was thinking of a z8 or a z9. I’m a teacher, so overall cost is somewhat important.

The Z8 is essentially a mini Z9. Its performance is very similar. You only lose on the built-in grip and larger battery capacity. It also tends to heat faster when shooting video. Other than that, yes, it's very good for sports.

I've shot D2 college basketball and baseball with a Z8 and F mount glass. It's more than enough. I've gotten good shots with a Z6II as well, but the Z8 is way better.

@@EL-cx2hk it depends on your computer. I did a batch of 1300 a couple days ago that took about 5 hours. It’s one of those things where I set it at night after the game and I go to bed, editing the next day.
