This week I share about purging my record collection. I made a pile ready to drop off and trade in to one of the biggest record stores in my area. I was excited at the possibilities of what my trade in would get me. To my surprise, my 30 plus records and cds were rejected, I was given a bad offer that left me stuck with a pile of records I no longer wanted. Now what? I spent the week documenting my experiment listing records on ebay. I also found a few defective records in my collection and tried to get them replaced or refunded at some of the big stores. Would Walmart take back a defective Adela record? Would Target let me trade in a warped record?

As David mentioned, a good record store will give you 33% of what they expect to price it for. In my experience, when I’m taking in really quality stuff I get 40%. I just don’t have the patience to sell a lot of classic rock and stuff online. So in a rare case if it’s rejected by a store for trade, I’ll try an antique store or just leave them at Goodwill. Great video. Cheers!

Hi Monie. Vinyl Chef Steve here. Bless your heart for all your hard work and efforts to sell some of your unwanted records. I opened a record store in Ontario Ca on Euclid Ave. It was called The Record Mission. Maybe you had been there? I eventually sold it and the new owner only kept it open for 3 years after that. It’s difficult to pay top dollar for used records. Unless they’re sought after titles and/or really fast sellers in great condition they sit in inventory far too long and eventually find their way into $1.00 bins where they stay and stay and . . . Record stores are very discriminating when it comes to titles, pressings and condition. Sorry you had to go through that. I’ve also sold many records on eBay for many years. I quickly learned that it wasn’t worth it to list records for less that $15.00. The cost of eBay fees, proper record shipping materials, my time, and now the IRS eventually wanting their 24% federal income tax cut eat up most of the profit. Great topic and video. I’d love to share more information with you about other ways to sell records and get the most money for the least amount of work. Bye for now! Steve

I'm glad that with all your hard work, you're selling some of your records. In my neck of the woods, those record stores have to be thought of as pawn shops. It's been going on for decades, as I remember getting ripped off along time ago, (mostly with found records). Selling records is mostly knowing what you paid for them. Then researching on how much the current market value is. Finally having a number that you're willing to part with. These days its highly recommended to only meet with buyers at police station parking lots, or similar safe places. Sadly we live in crazy, unsure times. Slightly warped records have been an issue since the 70's. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.

i had a similar kind of prob you had with your Almost Famous record. I can recommend the VinylFlat disc flattener (and Groovy Pouch) for flattening your warped discs. I bought the original version many years ago when it first came out and consider it an essential accessory as I find discs are rarely absolutely flat - usually due to the tight shrink on the jacket or due to hot environments during shipping since I rely on mail order.

Giving $1 for a record that sells for $5 is 20% what is the record store supposed to do? Give you $4 for a record they sell for $5? How can they pay their shop bills, overhead, make money to pay themselves? Record stores create platforms for people to come in because they do all the work for you. People NEVER realize how much it costs to actually run a record shop. Why do you think so many closed in the early 2000s? It’s because this mentality of the record store being a dirty place that never gives you a deal. But how do they survive if they can’t make money?

As someone who sells records, if you don’t have a brick and mortar store, your best options are to sell locally on Facebook market place and Craig’s list. No listing fees or dealing with shipping. And remember, time is money, spending 10 hours to make $100 does not make sense to everyone. Also consider record stores may take a year to sell your $5 record, all while paying rent and employees salary.

You should use Discogs to learn before you buy what records may be worth it if you possibly will be selling them later. The experience at the record store for basic albums is typical. I'm glad you got some money out of the situation. In the future, consider making your collection all killer no filler in what you continue to buy. Also, you should look up the run out matrix on the record compared to Discogs to find out what is original.

Years ago when I got back into collecting, I definitely realized early on to make the time to assess a record (after waiting too long and getting stuck with a dud). I even opened a couple high-priced sealed records because I wanted to assure the integrity. If you sell a sealed record of a special variant, especially one with extras / tchotchkes / posters / etc and you haven't verified the integrity of the record (including scuffs / warps (it happens!) / contents of the package, you put yourself in a comprised position. The buyer might rightfully claim an issue that you have no knowledge of...your defending at that point from a position of ignorance ("you take a risk with a sealed record"), but PayPal etc generally side with the buyer. As for warped records specifically, it depends on the severity and if it's easily replaceable or not (ex: a rarity). Severe warps and defects I return immediately. Thankfully, it doesn't happen too often. I also think I'm going to finally pony-up for a vinyl flat designed for my Rega deck. Lastly, I fortunately got rid of my CDs (500+) about 9-10 years ago when it was easier, but I had a lot of desirable titles and made good ca$h and / or traded for credit for records. Of those, I was left with a bout 165 less desirable titles; those I sold collectively to one buyer for $140. I have no regrets! Of my many pet peeves with CDs was those broken plastic tabs...always drove me crazy when that happened. Your video reminds me that I'm due to compile my own list of records to sell and I'm due for a make room / gain a bit of extra record spending ca$h sell-off. I always write too much...apologies!

thanks for sharing your experience, selling records isnt easy lol. So true that a seal album might be damaged, I am finding a lot of damaged records at the big stores. Yes, warped records bother me. We pay a lot of money for these records and for them to be warped is not good. The quality control by these companies still needs a lot of improvement. Luckily most companies have a very easy return policy so long as you return them in the proper timeframe. I have about 10,000 records and about 2000 CD's (mostly jazz and classical). I buy more jazz these days as I'm into the audiophile reissues from Blue Note and Acoustic Sounds. Jazz is a recent discovery for me (about 5 years ago) so most of my collection is classical. Depending on what type of warp is on a record and what you have turntable and phono cartridge wise, you have only one option and that is to pay a used record dealer to flatten the record. Chances are that record dealers are only interested in 1-2 out of 10 records as a general rule. I talked with a local record dealer recently and gave him my number to call me when he was not busy. He never called back. I do not pay more than $1.00 for records and I'm pretty picky about the condition. Honestly? Are buyers on eBay also paying for shipping? If not, I'd be surprised if $4 covers that. Your best bet is to have a garage sale. When I was a kid, many records were a quarter or fifty cents, so adjust for inflation; charge a dollar each.
@MonieMuse
@MonieMuse Жыл бұрын
Wow!!! A dollar 😭. Yes the price of records have gone up. So the buyer pays for the record and shipping usually comes out $10 for them. They send me the $10 and I buy the shipping label. Print it and ship it. Lots of work for $5 😂, then eBay takes a dollar. What helps is having the quantity, then I made a profit.

That store owner sounds like a jerk! I've found a store that really likes what I bring in to trade and I get between $100 and $200 in trade. Anything that isn't in fine condition I give to thrift stores. I've never tried selling anything online.

As someone who helps family run a shop, pretty much the only thing we would have offered a dollar or two for was the Billy Joel. Why would any shop take records that don’t sell (and that already fill their dollar bins and storage)? Old classical records don’t sell even when priced 4 for a dollar. Why would any shop pay for this? Just because? Most indie shops are struggling to keep the doors open and operating at super slim margins. That new record in shrink priced at $29.99? The shop is only making about $4 on it. If it sells. Yet they had to pay $25 to put it on the shelf. $25 they may never get back. As a result, they must pull every penny possible from used inventory.

Yes it’s good to hear the record store side and how much it cost to have records there, I wish before I went their ad was clear on what they would take but it’s ok I was able to make extra cash with these records I didn’t want. Most people have zero idea of how to sell their records to a store. Unless the item tilts towards rare, many will just get passed back to you. And don’t look at Discogs or price guides. Those listed prices are when someone has been looking for that title. That’s not the amount you’ll get.
