Sometimes I see people asking, “where are the women when it comes to records?”
I often think about why I don’t see a lot of women collecting records or cds, like I see the men.
I’m sure there’s all sorts of reasons - maybe this even applies to anyone who hadn’t discovered the record collecting life
I’m gonna give you the reasons why it took me so long to start collecting and creating my own music library
Thank you to those who commented on the community post, I tried to summarize your comment
**sorry for the audio if anyone notices. my hair was touching the mic

Agree with all of the reasons you mention. Also very refreshing to see someone with what I'd consider and call a "normal hifi setup" that most people rock at home, and are able to afford. Mine is similar to yours, slighly more expesive but not by much. It still gives me joy of listening, probably even more then for those who keep chasing the rainbow and keep upgrading their components until they reach their 'nirvana'. Keep it up, babe!

That is a fantastic topic and a very entertaining video. I retired a couple of years ago, and since then I’ll do a local record show every couple of months. My wife very graciously does these with me (probably to make sure I sell more than I buy!) Since she’s been doing this she’s gone from zero interest in vinyl, to calling me sometimes from a thrift shop or estate sale that she’s found some good stuff. It really is a great hobby, and it’s nice to see the enthusiasm surrounding music collecting. At the shows we see more men than ladies, but there are many who are extremely dedicated and knowledgeable collectors. Great job!

First time viewer here! One thing that caught my eye about your setup: it’s very modest compared to some of the other vinyl KZbinrs I’ve seen. And I appreciate that! My first child will be turning one in a couple months. I’m trying to figure out how to balance being a dad and a collector. Like you mentioned, having less money is one issue. Plus less time to listen, and less space, since we want to create safe play space for our baby. I’ve often dreamed of having the collector’s den, with walls stuffed with albums, video games, knickknacks, and equipment. Life is making me realize that that may not happen exactly as I dream it, or at least not immediately. So to see someone inspiring with a reasonable setup, while also making the best of family life is the kind of content I need! 😊

I've found, that in general, women do not like cables/speaker wires in the room etc, I have encountered and have had this discussion quite a few times. Hifi can easily look untidy, cluttered and messy. Men in general don't seem to mind this as much as women do. This is just my opinion, based on personal experiences. You struck a chord with me when you said you don't feel like a fan until you just listen to the band's music off of KZbin. I'll usually buy the vinyl and if I really love the artist, I'll buy the album on vinyl and cd. And if it's someone I'm a super die hard fan of, I'll buy the vinyl record and cd from them when I go to a show and get them to sign the albums afterwards. Good insight on record collecting. I like how you had the Seinfeld dvds in your hand too! Best, Steve

there is something to it about owning the music, for a while I use to buy a lot off iTunes, I have so much music I forgot about in my library and artist who I never followed up on. when I streamed apple music, forget about it those artist I long forgot about. the cds and vinyl in my collection become part of my life now I feel like I know these people haha.. so cool to get the music signed! that's a good idea, I wish I did that when I went to more shows when I was younger and kid free lol

Awesome subject Monie ! I'm afraid my answer might cause me grief so I'll phrase it delicately. In general , Women are more fiscally responsible than guys & aren't as quick to drop a hundred dollars on a record they can stream for free or buy on cd for $10-$20 Dollars. When you buy the groceries weekly you see how a budget can easily be thrown out of balance by luxury items like OG pressings of vinyl. Welcome To July ! ☀️

Interesting topic and video Monie. Many women Ive known over the years are only interested in the hits so they don’t care about the album or cd. There are plenty of men that way too. I realize I’m horribly generalizing but I’m only commenting on my experiences and relationships, including my wife. But she does have a handful of artists where she will listen to the whole album. But she doesn’t have that collector type mentality. One thing I’d like to add is a couple of people inspired me to start up a channel and one of them was Melinda Murphy. I liked her style of videos. I liked your comment about not feeling like a fan if you don’t own a physical copy of an artist. Well said and I totally agree. Have a great week!

One is the expense of vinyl, the other is I have Parkinson’s and CD’s, for now, are easier to handle these days. My upstairs neighbor, who's female, streams and plays vinyl. There are some out there! But then I have a friend, also female, who didn't want the extra blu-ray player I wasn't using because she thought it would be too difficult to set up (despite the fact that I already have it set up); she likes things "simple" and isn't that comfortable with electronics. Never mind that she navigates her cell phone just fine! There's a lot like her out there, too 😁 A very good point you made is that one need not have a fancy or expensive stereo to enjoy music. If a piece of music truly moves you, I think it will do that regardless of what kind of rig you have. Granted, the better the system the better it will sound (theoretically), but in the end it's supposed to be about the music. If I hear a song or piece of music I'm really into, what it's played on is secondary. If more people had a similar sense of things, maybe more women would get into vinyl (or CDs).

Lack of exposure to vinyl record collectors could be a major reason for why a lot of women just don't pick up the hobby of record collecting. Believe it or not, back in the 70s, when I was young kid, I would be with my mom or my aunt as they went to record shops! For them, record collecting WAS about social gatherings, which was a good point that you had brought up by the way (house parties, and what attracted my mom to my dad was they BOTH LOVED DANCING, and they were very good at it, didn't rub off on me, though😅!) Back then, it was about friends and family coming together to enjoy the latest dance records and socialize. My aunt has a large collection to this day, and growing up I didn't think it was unusual. A lot of my cousins and people near my parent's ages STILL have their records, and have had them for many years, some of them being my mom's friends, older women. They just are not into the newer music, but they have collected records in the past, and still have their collections.

oh that's so good and how fun your mom and aunts would go record shopping together, and then have dance parties! what a golden age. you might have helped me solve a mystery, I was given a box of records of Donna Summers, Santana , Stevie Wonder and they have the pervious owner initials - Ive wondered who would write on their records... maybe when they were social with them they could find who's record was who's. haha.. I bet those records bring back memories that makes them feel young again.

This subject resonates with me because I just happened to look at my KZbin demographics for the first time two days ago, and I was alarmed to see that it said my audience was 100% male. Also there are lots of tourists in my city and I've been seeing Norwegian and German moms with their daughters digging for records. It's different now, because us Millennials and Gen Z turned the resurgence of vinyl into a culture and A LOT of young women in my neck of the woods are into it. Also, given you're into Post-Rock.... have you heard or heard of Night Verses? Jon from ARTV here on KZbin turned me on to this purely instrumental Progressive Metal band from Fullerton, California when he briefly reviewed their newest album "Every Sound Has A Color In The Valley Of Night" in his latest video "The BEST Albums of 2024 (Mid-Year)". So, I bought the copy of this record that I saw at Press (a Vinyl Cafe in my neighbourhood) the other day and IT'S A MASTERPIECE!

That's kind of an odd question to me. At my local record store, I see a lot of women, especially young women, shopping for and buying records. I love to see it too! Sometimes they're looking at movies, once in awhile one will look through CDs, but it's mostly records. Maybe it's not half of the record shoppers being women, but it's definitely a sizeable percentage of them. I'm over there at least once a week, it's a fairly big store, I'm there when it's busy and I'm there when it's slow, but there's almost always some women, and they're almost always looking at records.

Well, that's your anecdotal experience. My anecdotal experience. Here in North Carolina (I don't know where you are stationed), I visit a good many different record stores (& record shows) pretty frequently & it is obvious & undeniable, in the various places I know at least, that women vinylists are in the minority (profoundly so). Beyond our respective & different personal experiences, however, there is an area where we can perhaps find common ground: KZbin. It seems obvious that on KZbin the vast majority of vinyl commentators are male. Why is that the case? Or is that another "odd question"? P.S. You might want to read some of the other comments in this thread to see what others have experienced.

Ok, so my take on this is a bit different, and it could be the area i live in. When I worked at a small record store from 2012-2020, in like 2012-2013 when vinyl records were starting to gain popularity again, the younger customers that were in like high school and even a few in middle school, they were primarily women. I also sell at a lot of local pop ups etc, where vintage clothing and art is sold. When I sell records at pop ups it is easily 50/50 between men and women. Record conventions though when i sell at those, it does to be primarily men. And lastly through my years as a store clerk and selling at record shows and pop ups and meeting all types of people, Women that know what records they want save the money and are not afraid to buy an expensive record, where as guys kick the tire and try to get a deal on something higher priced, women buyers tend to not hesitate.

I’m almost 50 and have been a professional music listener since I was 3. I absolutely love audio gear and it’s truly my only passion. Music is my life. I don’t need anyone to go buy music with, it’s such a personal experience. I also don’t just buy any new release on vinyl, I am all about buying the bands/music I’ve always been into. Sadly, in this day and age, music isn’t revered. It takes too far of a back seat. Bands aren’t real bands anymore, they rely too much on computers and auto-tuning and samples than learning actual instruments. Music was all about buying something and sharing it with your friends the next day. Streaming destroyed a lot of that as well. Industry is not the same, but it’s also not improving in any way.

Fascinating, believable commentary, thanks. What's funny is that, in my (male) experience, it's been females who have the most visceral & immediate reactions to music. (Generally speaking, of course.) I've also noticed that females tend to be more openminded to artists they don't know or haven't heard before & less tempted to pre-judge records by genre or reputation. (Generally speaking....) Plus, women tend to be less grumpy than male vinylists. (Why are so many record-store owners grumpy?) They also don't try as hard to be perceived as hipsters (gag). These are some of the reasons I wish there were more women vinylists.

Just like watching "Rachel's ghost" but sticking to topics pretening to collecting music. Which Mazzy, Harry, The Wax , Beatle Babe,& so on joins them. Hopefully you can contact these fellow women collectors on the vc to unite & do a livestream so more women will see these videos and start getting involved. Hope this video of yours finds more women that will reach out to you.... Always looking forward to watching your next video. Mahalo Ed

I do see a lot more females at record stores especially younger ones. People like Taylor Swift has brought in a lot of young women who may then branch off into something else. My family could care less about my music, it is a solo venture for me

But here’s an interesting thing. Any video I’ve seen put out by a woman gets thousands of views in just a few days. All those guys? Man, they just love to see a woman holding a Van Halen record! That’s not a criticism or a complaint. I just noticed when I see a thumbnail of a woman holding an album, there are always thousands of views. That said, I love to see anybody talking about music that I don’t know well but I’m interested in checking out or someone gushing about an obscure album that I love! It is very cool to hear your explanations. And yeah, the ladies are often minding the kids while the men go hunting for vinyl.

Great video! As a single dude, I think about the Sausage Party Factor of record collecting quite a bit. Your reasons notwithstanding, I still do find it surprising that the VC is like 98% dudes. 😁 But, to be fair, the age demo of VC people seems to be dudes 45 and older. Heck, most of the people who watch my videos are 50+ and, at a 97% clip, Dudes. 😆 Anyway. Keep doing what you're doing, Monie. Excellent topic here! 💯🙂

How interesting, I see SO many other women when I go to record stores! Maybe not quite 50/50 but pretty balanced. Of all the "hifi" niches, I find that vinyl is the biggest one for women. I will say that most women aren't as big into it as men. Men I know will have hundreds or thousands of records, whereas other women will have much less. To be fair, I'm a musician and so my social circle is a bit more likely to be into music and high quality audio. But even just when I go to a record store I feel like I see almost as many women as men.

When I first started collecting I just did it, I didn't make it my identity lol now its a little more of who I am because I have gotten super into it. men do get more into it, thousands of records like you said, as for the audiophile niche of it, Im not into that at all, I love how music makes me feel, and when it comes to sound I prefer analog and that's it. I am glad to hear there are more women in the hobby, its hard to tell cause they don't talk about it a lot.

Most women i know aren't all that into music, they say they are until you start asking some basic questions that any music junkie would know and you find out they just like whatever plays on the radio on their commute to work. In saying that i did inherit my mums record collection and she is into music just as much as me, so it might be that the generation that grew up with vinyl records have a bigger representation of women than today

I find the same results, I've really enjoyed learning about music from the different decades and how music was a diving force to culture, now its like people just listen to music in the background and don't give it much thought. music moves the human soul. so much to it. that's amazing your mom was a music collector.i think women get busy with life and forget about how special music moved them, reconnecting to music was a life saver for myself.

from my own experience and from what I've seen, men are more likely to have OCD and end up spending (wasting) money OVER-collecting things like baseball cards, comic books, physical media (records, CDs, DVDs), at least in my generation (gen x) - I'd say 75% of the record shoppers I've seen my age in the stores are men, it gets closer to 50/50 in the younger generations

creepy and pervy? i'm not disagreeing (or maybe i am). if you want to make videos like the daft punk fan here, nothing's stopping you other than believing there are too many guys doing this sort of thing. i'm guessing it's hard to make videos regardless of the topic (even if you know what you're talking about).

While your doing research were you still watching other content creators videos commenting and asking questions? I think you meant ASMR the beauty videos , haircutting , spa's I think this is what you mean? so which is better quality the drug store or Sephora? price per quality? commentors on youtube are important I see plenty of girls on you tube last week I saw some girls cd collection she's a younger girl Sofia studios. but your correct their's lots of men that do videos like Jeff, Jt's record room, Mr Boulder, Roger, Tainted Lord but music is different from sports card collecting that you would expect see men making videos. but with music community I expect to see both now sometimes you watch a creators video and they don't get back to you. but there are plenty of woman who make videos. they may be very young but there girls. the medicore guitarast just showed a record haul 17 minute video. we totally understand how busy you are and are wondering why this video is 2 weeks from your last 2 more weeks would be fine if you waited 4 weeks that's fine but yeah we understand how busy you are. so does your dad collect vinyl or cd's or basicly it's music shared by him and your mom?

I was trying to come up with 10 reasons lol and needed help so I asked around. My parents started finding records at the thrift stores, they have a small collection but my mom just got a cd player and loves it. It’s nice adding music back into life. That’s really good to hear more music channels by girls. Oh as for the make up, I found Sophia and drug store make up is all the same to me, I don’t notice a jump in quality, but I keep it simple, I try to find products that isn’t super toxic , which is hard . I try to post a video every month and if I’m lucky twice , I am not consistent at all.

Im going to generalize here, but when I go to concerts or music festivals, I tend to see a 60/40 or even a 70/30 split of men to women. I just think men put more overall investment (time and money) into music. I totally agree with your last statement, music is for everybody.

If you look at it from sensations, there is visual (books), auditory (music), touch (craft), and taste/smell (food). I know a lot of women who are avid readers, but few men. The reverse is true for music. Why? Don't know, but there seems to be a dichotomy between reading (book clubs are all by women) and music (audio channels mainly men). I know one millennial woman who's into 78s, and one fellow GenXer (I'm at the bottom, she's at the top) who is into (post-)punk. I only know one guy record collector (music journalist in CH). As a guy, I just do my thing with music, share on my insta account. Interestingly, I am much more a writer, would never do KZbin.

I think it’s due to the fact that collecting things in general has always been way more of a fascination with guys more than girls. I don’t know the exact reasons why but it goes with collecting anything. It’s more of a hobby that veers towards men for some reason. It’s like, how many women will you meet that collect baseball cards, or action figures? Comic books? If you go to a comic book store. Or a convention or whatever, I guarantee you will meet way more men there than women. Why? I dunno. I guess it’s just more of a guy thing. It’s funny isn’t it? I can’t explain why, but it’s just the way it is. Guy’s love collecting things way more than women do. And it’s always been that way and we maybe will never know the exact reasons why. like my wife. She thinks I’m crazy for collecting action figures, movies, and records. She doesn’t collect anything. She’s just not into it she says.
