My One Year Of Playing Bass Guitar Progress
Hope you enjoyed the video :)
Just some things I forgot to say in the video:
- I didn't play everyday and took a 2 month break twice while I focused on other stuff (school etc.)
- I'm pretty much fully self taught, although I did have a few lessons at the beginning to help with some difficult pieces
- For the last 8 months, I've mainly played songs using tabs, so all the notes I played were probably out of time with the actual pieces, but now I use sheet music!
- I only know like two or three full songs, because as you can tell, I much more enjoy playing the main riffs to songs
Guitar I use: Court Action PJ (it's a noob one for beginners)
If you are thinking about starting playing a guitar or have just started, I would recommend using sheet music or KZbin playthroughs instead of tabs, as I made the mistake of just using tabs and now have been spending ages re-learning songs with the correct tempo and note lengths. Just thought I'd add this in here in case it may help someone.

Hey! So far so good. You're doing very well. I'd advice that: 1. Always practice with metronome. 2. Watch your right hand. You're pulling, not plucking. What you want to do is lean your fingers about 60 degrees to the right and let them slide the srtings instead of pulling them. Pulling is a more of a guitar technique. Could be used in bass during arpegios for example, but outside from that better stick with plucking. Also, rest your fingers one string higher. E.g.: when playing on the A string your thumb should rest at E. That way even if you accidentally pluck no sound will come off. 3. Switch right hand fingers consistently. If you start with the point finger, the middle one comes second. When playing chromatic schemes it should be 1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2. Obviously, there are songs which will require different approach. This is not uviversal, the point of the exercise is to gain control over your fingers. Try it out! 4. Mute strings. That requires both hands. One of the crucial things define bass role is preventing sound. You must be as clean as possible. If it's the right hand use the rest fingers technique I wrote about above. If it's the left one try covering fretboard with fingers. There's also palm mute, pluck force and much more. 5. Leave advanced techniques such as slap for later. Try perfecting the basics first. I also have problem with that I come after bigger things first. That's not a bad trait, but requires control none the less. 6. Get a teacher. Nothing is better than a teacher.

a little late maybe. but i saw even after a year of playing that youre pluckinghand is still not comfortable. that is because you are using the wrong technique for plucking. insted of getting youre finger under the string and pulling it upwards try placing youre finger on the string you want to play and draging it across to the string above. its almost like a pinch. but remember, dont get youre finger under the string, place it on the string. i hope this helped. Keep it up dude.

I signed up to improve my playing during lockdown and it's been brilliant - fixing issues I didn't know I had, even after ten years of playing bass. The Player's path lets you progress by learning progressively more difficult songs that focus on different skills, and you can get support and feedback from mentors and fellow low-end lovers . As other people have said, getting any kind of lessons will save you a ton of time! Oh - and as soon as you can - start playing with other people! Happy playing!

Really great progress! I was honestly impressed with how well you did on your first slap bass try. I definitely didn't sound (nor currently sound) as good as that with my first slap bass attempt. One thing that you should work on is playing a little smoother. Your comparison of 7 nation army definitely shows that you made amazing progress. In your other songs however, your notes still sound a bit choppy when they shouldn't. Try not to leave as many gaps between notes and kinda let them flow from one note to the next. One thing that help with this is using a metronome and starting to develop your internal sense of rhythm. I'd suggest practicing with a metronome, but throughout your day, listen to genres of music that have heavily defined rhythms, like EDM and metal. You're honesty doing pretty amazing. It's very evident that you've been working consistently on this! Make sure that you spend at least 5 minutes a day or 15 every 2 practicing. Practicing for 2 hours every week tends not to give as good results as frequently practicing in short bursts. Good luck!
@ibivibes9836
@ibivibes9836 3 жыл бұрын
Wow this is really helpful, thank you very much! The metronome point seems to be something many people agree on as I've been getting a lot of comments about it, so I'll definitely give it more of a go. Someone also mentions plucking through the strings with the finger landing on the next string so maybe that will help remove the 'choppy' sound aswell? I took a short break from playing but now that I'm back, I'll implement the shorter but more regular playing sessions. Thanks again for your comment!

Dude great job just in 1 year! I taught myself bass by ear and been playing since Christmas of 2016, I started playing at my church within the first year of my playing(granted I wasn’t very good but mama started me off on easy songs then worked me up to the hard ones like Turn around by Judy Jacobs and Jesus said it), I’m now the church bass player so yay lol; keep at it man, You’re making such great progress! Subbed! When you learn a bit more then I would suggest listening to genre’s like Gospel(specifically the black gospel type because of the great bass lines) and then eras like the 80’s because songs such as I wish and Superstition have great baselines to play along with! Again, doing great man!!!!

Fine work, keep it up. If I might make some suggestions: - Rest your thumb on the E (and possibly A when you're playing the bottom two strings, but not absolutely necessary) string when you're not playing it. You'll be able to use it and the palm of your right hand to help mute strings that you're not playing. - Experiment with different right hand playing positions. IE, play closer to the bridge, closer to the neck, etc. You'd be surprised what kind of sounds you can get just by changing where you're plucking. - You can reduce the amount of work you're doing with utilizing left hand hammer-ons and pull-offs. You'll be able to get a smoother, more even sound with less right hand finger movement. - You do not need to worry (for now) about doing everything technically correct. Technique will come as you play and/or want to improve, focus on getting familiar with the neck and what notes are where. You know, the bass-ics. - Plucking is usually more of a sweeping motion across the strings, rather than a "lifting" motion when not playing slap stuff. It'll give you that warmer tone and make it a little easier to move. - Even though it's blasphemy, you could also experiment with a pick... What you're doing right: - Your left hand wrist positioning is on point. - Alternate plucking is on point. - You're playing a variety of different things and experimenting with different play styles. - Outstanding use of left hand ring and pinky fingers. - Best instrument choice. Remember, you form the foundation of the music. Bass gives form to the "raw materials" of the drum beat, and provides the platform that guitar, vocals, and other instruments are built on. Over time, you'll find your groove.
@michaelbiljon8249
@michaelbiljon8249 10 ай бұрын
Use your plucking hand thumb to mute low strings that you're not using. Let it float over the strings; perpendicularly to the strings. This gives you a cleaner sound and more control. Pull your plucking fingers across the strings (ie. Give it less attack). Practice scales (of any flavour) to a metronome, and focus on the bottom four frets. Make sure to fret "just behind" the frets. This gives you immense power and control over the notes. Practice slowly and deliberately. Learn and understand the cycle of 4ths and 5ths.

Great progess in a year, some advice: - your right thumb shouldn't sit on the pickup if you play the A-D-G strings (if you play something really fast on E and A string it can stay there) because will tire your fingers A LOT more! - play ALWAYS with a metronome or over the original song and always keep the tempo with your left foot - try a lot of different tempo exercise (the are tons on youtube) - keep play and have fun :D

I also have a crappy bass with a thick neck and a bad sound for slap because it's a p bass and i will buy a jazz bass probably next month. Pretty sure that the first song i learned was feel good inc. Continue to practice and you will be a legend one day!

Very good progress! As others have said, your plucking hand needs work now. 1 point I'll say is don't keep your thumb stuck on top of the pickup the whole time, for example, if you're plucking on the A string, keep your thumb on or just above the E, if plucking the D string keep your thumb closer to the A, if you hold your thumb and index finger closer together, like about the width that the strings are apart, this will help relax your fingers and will help with your plucking. you can also use the edge of your thumb to help mute the lower strings while laying and when needed. All the best and keep up the great work! :)

hey also one thing I recommend practicing will be let the thumb follow for example you play on the D string let your thumb rest on the A string and when u change string move your thumb as well that way you can do faster fingerings and not stress your hand to much

Great improvement! Aside from playing with a metronome and keep good time, which will come naturally with more playing time, you should time some time to practicing muting the strings with both hands so you can get a clean sound from each note played ( You can use " I Want you back" as practice because it is fast and for it to groove each note has to sound on its own, with no open strings sounding together). I hope this helps and keep up the good practice 🤘

Man, your progression in your bass playing is amazing for only a year!^^ I would recommend -a metronome (i think I spelt this wrong lol) this'll help with timing and basic beat!^^ -your plucking hand is a lil stiff, and I recommend you to just keep playin till you get comfy (to help with this, dont pull at the string, set the finger on top and drag,) - dont lift your hand when you slapp, move in more of a rotation than straight up lifting the hand, and this might not work for you, as everyone is different -and lastly, have fun! You have great promise :3 Oh and one last thing, learn the main bass line of Schism by Tool, if nothing else, it'll teach you hammer ons and hammer off, and how to make them sound cool as heck >:)

Some things that I think would be good for more improvement: 1. Learn pull-offs 2. Practice sliding 3. Use more wrist motion while slapping 4. Use a metronome to practice songs 5. Join a band 6. Control which string you are playing (if you're playing the D string try to work on not accidentally play the other strings) 7. If you don't know how to read sheet music then I urge you do so 8. I believe you have a cort artesian series in your hand, I think it's time for an upgrade as cort really just gives out good 5 string basses. I think you'd be good with a precision or a stingray just basing off your playing

You're doing great! Definitely get a metronome app as suggested. I would also recommend since it's been a year get another lesson or two. I'm not a bass player, but I did see some comments on a technique that you could get some help with if you take a few more lessons. I am a music major myself so I take lessons every week, but I think for someone that plays casually taking consistent lessons like that isn't necessary. If I were to quit attempting to pursue music and only do it for fun (not happening it's a big what-if), I would still do "checkups" every now and then to make sure I'm on the right track and to address any questions. Don't stop practicing! You seem to be enjoying it.

Dude this is great progress! I started around the same time, just before covid hit where I live. I would recommend practicing with metronome, rhythm is a must. And getting a bass teacher would probably help as well. First half of a song I learned was Schism by TOOL and the first full song I learned was Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen, would recommend trying those songs out:]

Nice, I will give you a tip. When you are playing an instrument you need to play with the effort less technique possible and you need to save energy. Right now you are using you thumb so far away of the string that you are playing. Put the thumb in the pickup when you are playing the E string but place the thumb in the upper string when you play the string. For example if you play the A string put your thumb in the E string. If you play the D string put your thumb on the A string. That will help you because your thumb and your playing fingers are not that far away from each other and your approach of playing the string will be much faster and effortless. And the position of your thumb will help you to prevent that you play the upper string by mistake. So keep the good job.

Dont forget moving you thumb with your playing as a mute for other strings, it helps produce a much clearer sound without any non needed notes

The only thing I will point out about your tecnique is that you play the strings moving your fingers away from you, you shouldn't do that (unless yo want play more harmonically letting the strings ring out), when playing a string your finger should land on the next string, doing that will give your sound more punch You have a really good progress, keep playing and you will be playing sick licks in no time

@@ibivibes9836 Ah yes, I see you are a man of culture as well. Need to see more 𝓢𝓵𝓪𝓹𝓹 in honor of Davie. It’s cool that you took inspiration from him and decided to put your thoughts into action. Those moments are the best. If you haven’t already, you should check out Polkadot Stingray and Band Maid. I absolutely adore both bassists and I think you would like them. Polkadot stingray is a little more on the math rockish side of things, with an overall crazy cast of members who create beautifully melodic and good vibe music. Band maid is more of a hard rock band that is not afraid to try new things. Their bassist acts almost as a lead guitarist creating lines which help support the group while staying in a realm different from the others. They are both super awesome. Keep on playing!

Hi! Nice job dude ❤️😊 Just a few things from my perspective: keep an eye to the tempo, try practice with a metronome and also with other people (with more experience). Last but not least thing, pay more attention to your plucking hand, sometimes the strings your not playing rings out. Just watch some tutorials on yt o take some lessons which is always the best thing :) Keep it up buddy! :)

Your fretting hand is going great for a year in, but i am begging you to start using rest strokes instead of free strokes on your right hand. It makes all the difference, it helps with timing, rythm muting and tone. Trust me, when i say EVERY BASS PLAYERS PLAYS REST STROKES. Where you push through the strings instead of plucking them
