I'm playing on Chess.com -- these aren't sponsored videos but the site seems pretty cool.
Chess has been having a resurgence in popularity this year so I have finally acquiesced to semi-popular demand and started to play a bit. First, let's hone our skills and get a little more warmed up and then let's conquer chess dot com one board gamer at a time.

When doing key moments or analysis, when somebody makes a mistake, look at the computer suggested REPLY to the mistake (green arrow on the next move) to understand why the move was a mistake. The first game analysis you didn't realize your h7 pawn was hanging, so both you and your opponent kept making mistakes by not taking/protecting h7, but you didn't realize that's what the computer was trying to tell you. Good chess content nonetheless!

I think moving your side pawns up by 1 each would make the computer think "oh no". Basically the opening moves of chess in general are suppose to open up your pawns so that your queen, knights, and bishops can start doing stuff. But if you waste your 1st moves only giving your rooks a one step (and then they're stuck again), then that wouldn't really be helpful.

NL, Creating a battery with your queen and bishop is smart at any level of play. It doesn't have to result in a checkmate(although at low levels it will sometimes) it's more that you are actually threatening something, which means your opponent has to respond, so you gain tempo. Not only that, it's a strong position to move forward from, much stronger than your queen in the middle of the board with nothing else developed and only supported by a single pawn. Especially since your next 2 moves were pawn moves and one of which blocked in your dark square bishop.

@@malthehelgren188 I was talking about Qg2 at 28:25 That little house of three pawns on the kingside is a very common formation in chess. It is usually used to put the bishop on the longest diagonal without exposing it to danger (g2 or g7 but you can also sometimes see this on b2 and b7). This specific development (developing means improving the position of) of the bishop is called a fianchetto. NL on the other hand, shoved his queen into there, effectively demoting it to a bishop since it had no way of using its usual mobility surrounded by all of those pawns.

I understand how the analysis comes to its conclusions, however interpretation of them doesn’t have to be so black/white. Your bB2 move was a “mistake” that was a real master stroke in understanding your opponents next move. It ultimately gave the advantage that you never let go of. Great play.

Here's how you avoid misclicks: Don't pick up the piece until you’re confident in your move.
@Pyronar
@Pyronar 3 жыл бұрын
The funny part is the misclick was likely a better move in that first game. I'm not going to run it through the engine, but I think taking the pawn would have resulted in Rxh6, reclaiming a pawn and attacking NL's queen. The queen would not be able to capture because of the checkmate threat. Rd7 defended that critical pawn on b7, freeing the queen. I'm not saying it's the best move in the position. It's still probably questionable, but I think taking the pawn would actually be worse.
@evilishies
@evilishies 3 жыл бұрын
@@Pyronar Ha yeah I noticed that too. Queen couldn't defend anything attacked by Black's rook, because it had to guard against mate. Bringing the rook back double guarded the b7 pawn. However the rook was itself then unguarded and Black's queen attacked it next move, so the other rook might have been a better option.
@Pyronar
@Pyronar 3 жыл бұрын
@@evilishies Maybe. I would have probably just played b6 instead. As long as it's not isolated, pushing the pawn one step is often the most reasonable response to a vertical attack. I haven't spent too long considering it though. Also I assume you mean white instead of black.

With my limited knowledge, I think that missclick on 11:00 was actually glorious. If you took the pawn, he could've took h6 pawn pressuring the qween even more that could probably ended up as checkmate. You can't take the rook because of the checkmate, can't defend with your rooks, can't move the qween. Anyways, that game was amazing to watch.
