Make sure her cooling fans are operational change the thermostat and make sure there's no trapped air bubbles in the system

Hi there When my cracked thermostat went bad. My overheating warning also came on immediately on the 1st drive for the day. Which obviously can’t be overheating yet. Because of the leaking coolant on the temperature switch it shorted the contacts out. That was the reason for the premature warning.

Gosh i wish we had mobile mechanics in my area! I will say my mechanic has been good to me! Just got a tune up after intermittent flashing engine light, cylinder 1 misfire. Car seems to be running much better! But i noticed when i start it it has a chemical smell, no overheating, no visible leaks. My Dad said it is common smell on some cars at start. I will keep an eye on it though

Those have that famous plastic coolant elbow leak...and the Dorman metal replacement. I havent owned 1 since 2003 and it was a 1988 Oldsmobile eighty eight. Had a 3800. The original fuel injected 3.8 L non turbo naturally aspirated.

that poor 3.8 series 3. i have a 2004 series 2 3.8. that thing is still going strong. just had to replace a radiator on mine due to over heating in the summer sitting in traffic, the dex coolant clogged up the radiator super super bad. swapped out the dex cool to conventional green coolant. shes running nice and cool now.

My dad was caught town with his 3.8 litre Buick L36 powered Holden VX Commodore when the radiator basically dropped its guts about a decade ago & since we live about 11 kilometres (a bit over 6 miles) out of town he was forced to drive it to one of the least desirable mechanics over here in Australia - Steve. He's a Parker whose workshop is now closed so now he's a mobile mechanic,him or his son sheared of the 6 millimetre screws which held the radiator fan onto the radiator & on a brand new radiator. That's probably why his workshop is closed now,his son took to one of the sway bar Link rods with a hammer & snapped it because it was kind of spot welded onto the Link rod ball joint. They didn't do a pink slip for my car for an annual registration inspection in 2013 so I took it somewhere else !

Those 3.8 Buick engines have a very unique and unmistakable smell in the cooling system when they blow a head gasket, smells like a burnt turd. I could pop that cap, take one sniff and tell you if the thing was cooked or not

It's a GM 3800 notoriously Toyota style reliability. But when she said she put K seal in it my Jaw dropped. Ugggg. Nooooo. Fix the source of the issue and flush that entire system immediately. Any sealants block up engine passages and cylinder head coolant ports. That can haunt the engine forever...

Old school trick is the rev the cold engine while squeezing the upper radiator hose. Normally it will pressurize and get tight.

I had a customer one time, the lady I worked with put the wrong oil filter on the customer's car. We called the lady and said don't drive the car we are sending a tow truck and the customer instead of pulling over literally romped on the engine while I was on the phone with her pretty sure it shot the filter off. I was like welp I guess that's one way to get a free engine. My point is good on her for pulling over when she saw the light. Btw the car that was blown up had 280k miles on it.

The radiator, those plastic elbows and lower intake gaskets are weak points on these 3.8 engines. They make problem solver intake gaskets with aluminum plate with rubber around the intake ports and they also make replacement aluminum elbows that dont crack as easy. The 3800 series 2 is a great engine, my wife ran them as a rural mail carrier for 7 years and in that time we've owned 5 buick lesabre's with the 3.8 and only 1 ever ran hot enough to damage the head gasket. GM used the 3800 in many differnt vehicles and platforms over the years. I dont know why they quit making it.

I believe these engines are based on the Australian made Holden commodores. Which stop manufacturing few years ago. Due to incompetence of how gm ran Holden and dwindling market share. And also fuel prices. No wanted 6 cyclinder engine as a family car.

I find it really sad that I'm no longer allowed to drive, ill but from a soon as I could understand to drive my tiny hand into tubes and pipes, plus reach wires his giant have couldn't reach. Today people have no clue about real engines, I know they polluted the planet (in have a pole star 2 it needed a part so I had a hire car for over 6 months 😮 I'm sure my product engineering son could have 3d printed it for me quicker!!! Get a cheap IR thermometer, can check temp of hoses or rad and see if ect is off or by checking different sections of coolant you can tell if a thermostat is stuck closed or if there is a blockage in radiator or if wp is crapped out

Lower intake manifold gaskets and radiator and water pump 98% chance they bad lol. And oil pan gaskets and all engine mounts lol and the oil cooler can develope blockages and leak internal and external. Oil cooler hoses occasionally form large sediment blockages and stop flow.

In many communities you can dump small amounts of old anti freeze into the toilet if you are connected to a municipal sewage treatment system. Check with whomever operates your sewer system. Never, never dump it into a storm drain out in the street or into a septic system.

They're great motors, just have to rev them high all the time and the rev hang is bad too. Gotta get a flashpro soon lol. It had over 200k so far and still seems brand new. When it finally does decide to crap out on me I'm gonna do the k24/k20 swap.

Im a mom of 4 was homeless in the car for 6 months, finally left my homecity to a smaller town across the border to a motel no sign of trouble here but having car trouble for 3 years straight. I spend a lot of money for the oil leak, while its hard to pay my carnote. Basically, i spend as Much in oil maintenance as i do for my monthly payment . Now i probably have issues with my timing belt breaks or suspension idk. I changed my battery alternator and 2 back tires. Any wisdom for anything woukd be appreciated. If i don't have a car ill be pretty stuck. No reliable family which is my i came here, no public transportation near me with my 4 little ones. Their dad passed 3 yrs ago as well. Nope. 3.8 one of the best engines ever built. First year's of dexcool coolant reacted with gaskets. If they weren't replaced or coolant changed there were some problems. Just look up gm 3.8's. Or just look up grand nationals and learn how great these motors were. Unless you're talking about other car manufacturers 3.8's. Because ford and I think Chrysler also made 3.8l v6's

Those Buicks do have a weakness with rubber coolant lines behind the power steering pump however. There is a kit to replace the rubber lines with metal ones, many owners replace proactively before they start leaking.
