How does the rice cooker know your cooking brown rice? I only see that it has a button. I’m considering buying this one rather than the aroma one because those one looks way easier to clean
@helpfulnatural5 жыл бұрын
Someone asked this same question 9 months ago. Here is my reply: 9 months ago (edited) This rice cooker does not have any settings, just the switch. The cooking element under the pot has a spring/weight mechanism that senses the weight of the pot from the beginning of the cooking cycle when there is water in the pot. As the rice cooks, it absorbs the water and steam is released through the lid. And since brown rice still has the bran in tact, it takes longer for it to absorb the water, hence the longer cooking time. I used to have an Aroma brand cooker that used a timer instead and my brown rice was never done correctly. The cooking cycle of that model took twice as long and the rice wasn't done completely. This DuraCeramic cooker is the best rice cooker I've used so far. Everything is done perfectly and nothing sticks to the bottom of the pot. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! :)

Did you only press the lever once? I only ask bc how does it know if there is white rice or brown rice? Since brown take longer than white. Does the white rice get burned on the bottom a little?
@helpfulnatural2 жыл бұрын
This rice cooker has a weight sensor under the cooking pot that senses the weight as it cooks. Since brown rice is harder because the hull is still intact, it takes longer to absorb the water while cooking. My white rice does not burn or brown on the bottom and cooks much faster than brown. I have a bunch of videos using this cooker including white rice which is part of my original review of this model. I've included cooking times for each demo I've done on my channel. Hope this helps.

Great helpful video! My grandma likes her rice really soft... can this rice cooker make it softer? Like does it have an option to keep cookin or it automatically stops when it feels like its done?
@helpfulnatural4 жыл бұрын
It automatically stops when the water has been evaporated but it doesn't shut off the cooker. It goes into "keep warm" mode which keeps the rice hot until you unplug the unit. After the cooking cycle is done, you can taste it to see if you want it softer, then add a little more water and push the button down again to cook it longer. Hope this helps. :)

One question, I will be cooking brown rice for my husband with steamed broccoli for meal preps. I see that the rice Cooks in 43 minutes which is quite long to steam veggies. Do you think like half way I can put the pan with veggies on top and close the lid? Will that affect the rice from cooking? Or does adding veggies on top of white rice affect the cooking time for rice?
@helpfulnatural5 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't affect the rice to place the steamer basket in during the cooking cycle. I sometimes open the lid to check on its progress and haven't had any issues with it not cooking properly. You just don't want to leave the lid off for an extended period of time but to just add the veggies in at the appropriate time should be fine. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! :)

@@helpfulnatural Is it okay to place frozen vegetables onto the steaming bowl to be steamed ot should they be thawed out first?
@helpfulnatural5 жыл бұрын
@@huehuehueheh5806 The owner's manual has a chart on page 9 with instructions as to when to add them on page 10, showing cooking times for various vegetables. You can definitely steam vegetables while rice is cooking in the pot below, you just have to add them at the right time so they don't overcook while waiting for the rice to cook thoroughly. I don't think it matters if the veggies are room temperature or frozen but the latter will take a little bit longer since they would have to thaw first. You would need to practice with different frozen veggies to figure out when to put them in and for how long. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! :)

The reason I looked for your video and others like it on how to cook brown rice in my Oster rice cooker (and you're right, the instructions aren't helpful) is because I've tried it at least three times before and it had come out underdone every time. I put a bit more water in it the second try like you have done and got the same result. Third time it was underdone but also watery this time. I don't understand timing it because the rice cooker always stops cooking when it thinks it's done no matter what. I can't see what I could be doing wrong. I no longer have the bag that the rice was sold in but it looks like it's short grain. My cooker is almost 10 years old. White rice cooks just fine so I don't think it has anything to do with its age. Any advice?
@helpfulnatural2 жыл бұрын
Did your rice cooker cook brown rice better when it was a newer appliance? Although it still works, it may not be heating fully as it did when new...just a guess. The average lifespan of rice cookers is 7-8 years with regular use and 3-5 years with heavy use. From my own experience, I found that smaller appliances that use heat tend to have shorter lifespans than those that do not use heat. Hope this helps. 🙂

@@helpfulnatural tbh I'm sure if brown rice was cooked in it at all till I started to. I bought it for my mother who didn't use it often. I got it back after she passed away. I never used it till my son started living with me. He loves rice so I've been using it now about three to four times a month for the past three years. I did a google search..... If it is undercooked the rice can still be salvaged by adding half cup of boiling water. Stir the rice with a fork to separate the grains and press the cook lever. Allow 15 minutes and check the rice. If rice is still hard, repeat above. Another source said: 1/4 cup and check after 2 to 3 minutes. I guess I will just have to experiment. I will try it tonight and if it comes out undercooked I'll try the half cup water and check in 15 minutes or until the cooker shuts off on it's own. Thank you for answering my questions so quickly.

I've seen youtube videos where they use as a 'rule of thumb', put in your rice, shake it so it is level and pour in water till when you stick in your finger the water covers your rice up to your first knuckle. The people who use this ratio, swore by it. Of course all peoples fingers are different lengths, so who knows. I had an Indian friend who boiled the rice with lots of water, then when the rice was done, he drained it and by hand squeezed out all the extra water. It tasted fine to me, that way too. I think a rice cooker it the most fool-proof way to make rice.

Per the user manual, the lines inside the cooking pot correspond to the number of cups of rice being used. With brown rice, I tend to add just 1 or 2 Tablespoons more if it isn't soft enough when the cooking cycle is done. As for rinsing the rice, I always do this 3 times before adding to the pot.
