Ostrich male skin colour changes when they are ready to mate. I remember the info visiting an ostrich farm. I have noticed that Carl's legs are red. This is the indicator. In ostrich farming, a man cannot enter a field with a male ostrich in heat, but women can. It is linked to hormones.

Hi from South Africa, we have many ostriches here. In the western Cape, we have signs on the N7 highway instructing motorists not to honk their car horns! That's why I love you guys because you do learn from your mistakes and try to be better. Both you and Carl are still learning about each other. I love that. I seriously don't think he'll be a danger to the littles. If he would be he would have shown it at feed time.

You took the words out of my mouth. I just said to my self this is journey. I second thought this out because Of the memories of our precious Baby Journey. And didnt want to add to sadness.. But each baby little or large that Comes to the SANUTARY does have its own journey. Yes it's a learning process. Even for us that follows IMA DONKEY SANITARY. I'm so glad I can tune in the videos that you all share with us. Thank you so much for sharing. Lester and Jamie I'm sure you have I hope you reach out to vets that handle large animals and work with these beautiful animals. I lived on a farm. Our vet worked with tiny baby's to large baby's. However he also became the Kansas City Mo Zoo Vet. I have known him since I was a little. I'm 69. He is in his 80s I've watch the gentleness he uses with the animals. He's the Best. My mother always told us to be gentle to the animal. Carl has been a great addition to you all. You have done a lot with him in a couple of weeks. One thing for sure watching you how you handle him is amazing. When I was a teen and in 4-H I got a hereford cafe bigger than me. Maybe close to Pearls size but no horns. That ment roping her, getting drugged, taming her, and have her ready for the fairs. Training a wild calf wasn't easy. Kinda like watching a western. This calf wasn't born on the farm. We bought her from another farmer. Like I said you all have come a long ways with Carl in two weeks. CONGRATULATIONS. Thank You for Sharing All the Videos With Us.

You are both so right! The people that raise them for profit, don’t have a relationship with them. Just to collect eggs they use a super long scoop or drive their truck in the yard for protection. Another farmer has had the boy since a chick. He’s able to pet and touch his feathers. His hens aren’t friendly. As you both said it’s a totally individual situation. You are like that with ALL your babies. You get to know them and do what it takes to give them their best life. 🌻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💕🙏🏻🙏🏻

Yes Carl is in all out male-mode (in-season they call it). Besides the behavior, you can tell by their red legs and their red skin on their neck & sometimes face, depending on the bird. Ours got very aggressive, to the point that I couldn't go in the pen. If I did, he'd come running full speed and try to kick me (it was his mission in life lol) and when he couldn't kick me, he'd kick the fence. It finally got so bad I just threw their feed over the fence and he'd still kick the fence. When the female was with him, it was even worse. Their dance is a ritual to attract females and show their dominance. I mentioned once that I had ostriches, they are difficult, but if anyone can figure it out, y'all can ... The aggressive males tend to stay aggressive, like a rooster that always wants to fight. Dancing in front of him is like teasing a dog, in a sense, it eggs him on. Trying to pet him is also egging him on. When they raise up like that, it's a warning you're invading their space. Our ostriches were hand raised. When we got them as yearlings, they were so much fun. You could walk with them, side-by-side, it was amazing. You could pet them ... You could even touch their legs. That ended though when they came of age. These are just my recollections, don't know if it helps any. Thanks for sharing.

Lester letting Carl peck on his hand, is establishing the pecking order. Carl dosen't wish to be grabbed by his neck or touched just yet. Waiting to develop trust can take awhile. Carl is adjusting, dealing with the stresses and anxieties of his new life. His neck is where he is vulnerable, and constantly grabbing for it, stresses Big Bird. Lower voices, walking with, not at, keep your hands to yourself, always have a treat or reward, and let time turn things around.

I just think you have to be careful where Carl is concerned. Because exotic animals like that have been known to look at humans as their mate. I know that happened with a giraffe at a zoo one time, he was bottle raised and became closer and closer with his caretaker and then eventually they had to move her completely out of there and not allow contact with that animal because he was looking at her as his mate. So you do have to be very careful where he is concerned.

I was doing some reading about ostriches and apparently if there is no same species mate they will fall in love with their caretaker. It totally makes sense the caretaker is the one feeding, bandaging, interacting and giving love. Ostriches have a small brain too. It's interesting you mention other exotic animals including the giraffe. Just like humans animals want love and attention and don't want to be lonely!

Awww! I think Ringo is who he is, but other than Lester playing with him w/ helmet. I think it's sometimes he's showing love in his hurtful way, and dominance.

Carl as got to learn who's the boss 💪 just the same 👍 we'll done Lester xx

The older he gets the harder it will be to control him. I've said before that I've seen a male kill an stomp into the ground his mate! The male had to be moved into his own compound and none of us could ever go inside. He was fed and watered from the outside of his fence for our safety! At some point he will go after the other animals and people. He's young but as he matures his neck will become red and he will not be able to control his behavior. Ya'll have too many people an animals around to keep taking chances that he can be trained or kept as a pet on the farm.

It's good to know what triggers odd behaviors in your animals. So good to see that Carl actually backed down from Lester's passive-aggressive dominance upon entering the Littles pasture. Good thinking, Lester. A little bribe, a mild push and he's learning who is boss.

Excellent fact video Jami ! You have done a lot of research on Carl. Once Carl catches on what a lucky guy he is, landing in the best place in the world he could possibly live. He will warm up to Lester. It would be funny if he connects like Ivan is with Pawpaw. Love you guys ! Be safe.

I would talk to everyone interacting with Carl and teach them what is working so that everyone is consistent. Carl will learn to know what to expect. Especially what signs to look for and how to defuse if he challenges and he will. Hell also know who is weak and who isn't.

Lester and Jami, you might consider contacting a zoo that's familiar with Ostriches and their habits. Dr. Jeff, the Rocky Mountain Vet, on Animal Planet, has a Veterinarian in his practice, Dr. Baier, that worked at the Denver, Colorado Zoo for 14 years. I'm a big fan of Dr. Jeff and his channel, too. Maybe Lester could get more information from the farm that Carl came from.

That Jan isn’t giving up, and thank u all for caring so much and taking the time and doing the homework and putting the effort into Carl, they are fun birds and eventually he will se so as his human and not his mate.. lol.. sorry had too. They take lots and of care and patience and time. They are beautiful and majestic birds with attitudes but once the figure you out they are loving Carl will get it

Lester a alpha? I don't know? Maybe with the testosterone levels up, his pheromones will convince Carl he's one of the boys. But he gets punked by almost every animal there. If he isn't getting butted, the quackers are showing him the pecking order. Too late for Lester to be anything other than Lester. And that's good enough.

Just like Elephants they can be agressive when they are in musk which most of us call in in Heat. So glad you are researching & learning thats because of how much you care for your babies! Why I respect 🙌 you all so much! You are teaching me alot! Thank you 💕 😊
