I love the way Maggie wanted to defend her daddy, even though Carl is 3 or 4 times the size of her. I'm glad you guys are working these things out and hopefully it will improve between Lester and Carl x

Trudi, I think more like 6 or more times Maggie's size. Plus Carl is the aggressor. Watch out for those talons & kicks, the beak is bad enough. But ostriches use their feet & legs as weapons as well.

Just my opinion as someone that has spent my life working with and training animals but, I think the 2 main issues are: 1 there is a big difference between domestic and wild animals and you can't truly take the wild out of wild animals, they live based much more on instinc and hormones. You can tame them but its not the same as being domesticated. 2 As you already found out Carl is in his breeding season so his hormones are raging more than usual. Love your videos and your family!!

Some wild animals can live with people fine, like wild hogs, frogs, turtles, wild horsed and donkeys, while others can not, like ostriches, wolves, big cats.

I like all the comments that are here. Maybe the ostrich is an animal that needs to be with humans who has raised him from right out of his egg. That way he might not be so wild and see Lester as his protector. You don't know how Carl was treated before he came to the Sanctuary. He came with a lot of baggage and he's trying to communicate with you the best he knows how. Keep watering him! He loves that! I love the video!

I think Carl is/was just so used to having to fight everyday at the place he came from. It might take awhile to un-learn that there isn't a threat close. Your steady care will win out, you can tell Carl loves the Sanctuary.

I wish I could come to the Sanctuary and help you guys with Carl but my situation i am in will not allow it. It’s hard to interact with an ostrich that you didn’t raise however it can be done. It took my Dad six month’s to enter his pasture without being attacked. Lol, my Dad wore a bulletproof vest around his ostrich.

It's really amazing how short a time it took for all of them to start following him around wherever he goes and how calm they have all become really. Even Annie isn't as on full alert 24/7 like she was, I now see her lying down more often resting and she is even relaxed in her posture and I have never seen that before lol 🤣😆🤣😆and ROWDY RINGO is a bit calmer than before 😒 I do kinda miss his shenanigans lol 🤣😆 but I enjoy learning about CARL 😂🤣😂🤣 Lester will have to be the biggest MALE and not let CARL be the dominant one, but CARL needs to feel like he's the protector of the littles pasture 🥰 you guys will figure it out and I will be here with you all the way watching every video no matter what the subject because I love you and I love all the animals and the videos. Anna Garcia: You got that right! I have two male quaker parrots and the alpha male of the two ALWAYS want what I have even if it's not his. Such as the the wire to my phone charger. He thinks it's shoe laces and wants me to just hand it over to him to wrap around his cage bars. That attitude he gives me when I deny him from getting a hold of it. That bird! LOL 🦜🤦‍♀️

I have no personal experience with this but, a friend who used to work at a local farm with ostriches said they used to take a broom into their pen with them and hold it above their heads to appear taller. Love your page and all the babies!

Unfortunately Carl is in love mood with Lester & his crocs 💕. See if ROOSTERS are more attractive to Lester who turns red LOL.
