Totally agree with the free flight. I live in CA too, in an area where there are hawks, falcons, owls and territorial crows, so nope. My babies fly back and forth in the house and they do not fly into objects, their flight control is incredible. Verde and Skittles are a Green Cheek and Sun Conure, respectively, so it's sufficient for them. That being said, some people are able to free fly their birds safely.

I had a similar experience in exposure to birds. I had ALWAYS thought I would love them but was never exposed to them. My mother in law, at the time, got a female Eclectus. She was BEAUTIFUL AND SHE WAS SO SMART! When I got home from my 1st experience I was sold! I got home and talked to my husband. He sid no. My mom in law see uprised me on my next birthday with a Cockatiel. He couldn't not let me have him, lol. It took me 2 yrs later to decide to get a bigger bird. I took my time, researched, stalked Many breeders. At the time, I just thought about a baby.I found a breeder that was EXCELLENT! I put a down payment on the next 4mo old hatchling she had not care of sex. I got a female 4 mo old Congo African Grey. She was my BABY!

Hi Marlene, firstly THANK YOU for all your videos, they have been so helpful. We are in Australia. We have 2 rescued Peach faced Love birds *who wont let us near them as there previous owner only kept them as breeders then sold them off because the boy is too old*. They have free flight around the house, are real characters but wont let us near them, its been around 3 years now. We also just got a Pink and Grey Galah. I am an unofficial bird carer. Ive taken in sick *and fledgling* chickens, seagulls, magpies, doves etc over 40 years. Yes im old, 64. I feed the Pink and Grey Galahs and crows, and seagulls and dove, willy wag tails, rainbirds, green eyes, basically any bird that wants a feed. Weve have several different family groups of Pink and Grey Galahs come in twice a day for food. Its amazing how they are all different colors in the different groups. I caught one last week in my cage that is obviously an escaped pet. We named him SUNNY. He was so gentle, let us handle him, scratch him etc. He seemed to be a young male. We realized because they live 40-60 years, we weren't in a situation to keep him. We contacted 4 farm/rescue bird/animal zoos trying to find someone who could take him and give him either Free flight or a huge aviary, but nobody wanted him as they all say each week they all get phone calls for escaped Galahs so they had no room. We couldn't face someone taking him just to have him in a cage for his life. We released SUNNY again into the flocks, and he seemed to join them but not actually be in them.. sort of a fringe dweller. We watched him for a couple of days, but he seemed to be alone all the time, coming in to feed etc.. so we recaught him again. We fed him up for a couple of days as his breast bone was sticking out. We then released him again and he seemed to team up with one particular pink and grey. Hes come in a couple of times since with that friend, so we are pretty sure hes going to be ok. Then yesterday, we decided to catch another pink and grey we have been watching. Hes an old timer.. comes in with his family *they all have mottled colored pink/grey feathers" unlike the other familes who have dark pink or pale pink. He would come in sometimes with the group or afterwards. He was be hunched over and barely be able to walk.. eat a seed very slowly and fall asleep.. or sit on the fence while the family fed and fall asleep all fluffed up. He must be very old by the way hes walking and acting. It took a few days to catch him as being old he knows all the humans tricks and was always staying away from the cage trap.. all the youngsters would dash in and out gobbling the wheat, while this old boy would take a wide birth and walk around it. he even went up to it once, to bite it, test it was metal.. jumped on the top, walked around it trying to set the trap door off. Very smart old boy. We caught him because his family would always fly off when there was a alert call, but this old guy would just sit there.. the family would fly off and he would just sit there.. or potter around slowly. We were worried because a predator could get him *we have chicken hawks flying over the house often because we have 2 chickens*. There are also cats. Winter is coming, hes old, so we decided to catch him. It took a couple of days, but finally yesterday after putting some nice tempting sun flower seeds in the trap he went in and we got him. He didn't scream, he just tried to get out.. we got him inside and into a nice big cage. He still didn't make a sound and pretty quickly just started eating. Later that day, I tried patting him he bit, but I was wearing suede gloves..a couple of hours later, I took off my gloves and opened the cage and again started to pat him and he was fine.. he let me stroke him gently and speaking to him. I then started to scratch his face and back of head *saying Scratch scratch*.. he immediately dropped his head and enjoyed the head scratch. I handled him for a while, then got him to step up and took him out of the cage and put him ontop of the cage on a perch next to my Love birds cage where they were sitting ontop of their cage.. He was great.. he was very happy siting there. The love birds as so cheeky and flew over to his perch, moved up close to him, chatting to him. The cheeky lovebird boy flew into HIS cage and started eating HIS food haha... he then flew up, sat next to him and proceeded to bite his foot, to which the Galah turned and tried to bite him back.. it was all not aggressive, just funny as they were investigating each other. He had a couple of flights though the house, and had a good sleep last night. Today hes a bit more standoff but hes ok. Hes eating and preening well. happy just to sit on his perch ontop of cage. I tried the Vegies for breakfast as you suggested with both but the lovebirds and galah just wanted seeds. My male peach face has been going bald for about 1.5 years now. they REFUSE to eat vegies or fruit. the female is fine, but the male is going bald. the feathers all grow back, but then fall out when they are about 1/2inch long. Im pretty sure its nutritional or maybe hormonal because the female isn't losing feathers. The Galah I named MOTELY because of his mottled pink/grey feathers all blending into each other. Hes very quiet.. hasn't screamed once.. he makes a small noise every so often and that's it. Ive been playing all your youtube videos and others with Pink and Greys and hes been watching. Ive tried the "Step up" but hes now moving away from me when I ask him that. Ive tried putting him on the couch next to me, and he just fly's back to his perch on top of his cage. I think about releasing him again, but hes so old, winter is coming *we had storms and hail stones last week*, hes obviously not got a mate now, and is open to predator attack because he doesn't move when alarm is sounded and his family flies off.. if I release him again, I don't think he will survive. Last week another pink and grey came in with a broken leg it was heart breaking, but he wouldn't go into trap.. he would belly land, and just be on his stomach and try to reach out with his beak to find seeds to eat,,, others would attack him, but he could fly really well. I haven't seen him again in the group so I believe hes gone. I ABSOLETLY have always believed in birds not being caged. free flight IS THE ONLY way a bird should be kept. I don't know if I can ever train Motely being so old, but he seems to be happy. He sleeps a lot. Ive got pics but theres no way to upload them here. Ive joined your FB page and will see after you accept the joining if I can upload his pics. Any advice from you on this subject I welcome. God bless you and your hubby for doing such a wonderful job on your birds and advice. (Johns wife)
@johnmac39314 жыл бұрын
Hi again.. update. Motely seems more distant today not wanting to be handled and more spritely. Hes been flying around the house, hanging out with my love birds, and his diahorrea seems better from yesterday. So I decided to let him go back with his family. They were in feeding, running in and out of my cage trap which is so funny to watch.. the young ones play fight inside the trap. He wouldn't step up today, he just kept turning his back on me and walking away.. so I grabbed him gently and took him outside. He started to bite but not too hard.. I got to the back door and he finally sat on my finger and saw his family eating... he just sat on my hand... he didn't fly away.. he just watched his family for about 1 minute.. I kept saying "go on Motley go back to your family".. he finally did, flew up to the fence above them and sat pruning himself. They all finally flew up to the fence after about 5 mins of eating. Motely moved up to a younger one next to him and it groomed his face.. soooo darn cute..I called out "Bye Motely and he turned and looked at me, then they all flew off... So I think me having him for 2 days on good food, good nights sleep, hes a lot better. It was a REAL honour to spend time with him and SUNNY.. they showed such sweet spirits, never screamed, never really bit me and LOVED their head scratches... pretty good for wild birds!

You shouldn’t have to put out a disclaimer for having an opinion. You weren’t starting a rumor (about free-flight) you were just stating your thoughts, and that’s why we love listening to you! You’re my numero uno in the bird world!

Pls do a part 2. I'm so happy that you do personality rather breed in animals. Even though there are certain breeds be it cat, dog or bird...I know what I end up getting is what is meant to be. I hate it when someone asks me what my favourite is. For me it means my world around me would be very small. Thanks again for yr great Q&A.
