You are one of the main reasons I decided NOT to get a cockatoo. I wanted one badly……for a long time. But, as a rabbit owner and understanding that only some people should have rabbits, I did my research. Thoroughly. I know that my lifestyle is not what is best for a cockatoo. Once I realized that it was not hard to decide that I shouldn’t have one. You’ve got to love the animals more than your own selfish needs. I get my “bird fix” living vicariously through other people’s bird videos. Thanks for all you do to raise awareness.

I absolutely agree that a parrot is not really a pet. They are companions. I am getting older and I have a 21 year old blue and gold macaw. I am starting to make plans for my baby when I am gone because he will most likely outlive me. One huge problem is that he is very loud. He is a very happy active parrot but he is also prone to screaming during the day. Many people want him because he is so friendly and sweet...but people have also been around on one of his loud days and they immediately decide they cannot deal with this loud vocal expression. I have to find the right person to take him in or he will be bounced from one family to another. I love him enough to keep looking until the perfect patient family can be found. Love your videos. Deb

Depends on the breed and personality of dogs. But dogs have a higher probabilty to be domesticated than birds. It is better to get a bird that comes to you and respects you. It is not a good idea to pick a random bird. You have to get a bird that matches your personality and they choose you! That might be the reason why she has a problem with them. Every animal is different, like humans. Always give animals respect. Let them choose you. 😊

I have a parrot. This video is literal. When she says she's gone through necklaces, wires, keyboards, she has. Jealousy is real for a parrot. I found the amount of sound they make maddening to the point where I just couldn't have my parrot's cage in my bedroom anymore, and I don't even have a loud bird. I have a tiny rose crowned conure. Every hour they spend out, you need to pay at least 50% attention to where they are and what they are doing, and this can get exhausting. They can't be in houses where anyone is even vaguely non-empathetic, because its these people that easily develop a bad relationship with a bird. Take heed to this video, because as much as I love my parrot and i'm in it til death do us part, they are ever changing, attention seeking, and above all else need WORK.

Most parrots are sold when they are young and cute and loveable, but then they go through puberty around 5 years of age and want a mate. They then bond with one person in the home and become aggressive to anyone else. It's at this point that they get passed on from one owner to the next, and the parrot becomes bitter and dangerous. My best friend had a cockatoo who was her "baby" until she got married and had kids, and they had to move the bird out of the house as she attacked the kids. I've never had a parrot, but I swear I saw it's heart break when it was sold. Would it have been better if they had looked for a bird mate? Surely a pair would have been better than selling it to strangers?

The same happened here, I got Avion ( my white budgie with Greyish periwinkle patterns ) on 12/26/19 and my life hasn't been the same... I rarely ever left the house for to long because without my carrier i couldn't take Avion with me anywhere, when i did I'd cover up the carrier so he wouldn't get cold and if i thought it was to cold to take him anywhere, id stay home... He loves to crawl up my arm and hang on my shoulders and back if im laying down, His favorite thing to perch on on my living room is the Dolly ( its a cart that can help lift heavy objects ) he will sit on that thing for hours. I'd take him in the shower with me at least once a month ( so i don't wash away the waterproof oils on his feathers and get him sick ) this month has been an exception cuz he has been showing signs of molting and i was told letting them bathe helps with the molting process...

Ironically what encourages me to have a parrot is that even if she says all of those things (which is awesome, no one should ever adopt a parrot without thinking about all of this stuff) she is still having three of them. She is proving that having a parrot isn't impossible as long as you have enough love and commitment for them. If you think about that, having parrots says a lot more about the owner than the bird itself. Congratulations Marlene, I admire the amazing labor of love you are doing with your feathered companions.

Thank you for making this video, because most bird owners gloss over these things. Part of me wishes I didn't get parrots in the first place, but it's too late now, because they're my children at this point and I will never give them up. Yeah my life would have been waaaayyy easier and more relaxing if I didn't have birds. If I leave the house for more than 2 hours, I start feeling guilty for leaving them alone for so long. I worry alot about their nutrition and about them getting enough mental stimulation. The only time I can relax and enjoy myself is after I've put them to bed. Having a full-time job is not doable of course, unless you work from home, which is hell if you have birds screaming for your attention. And non-bird owners won't understand so don't count on their sympathy lol. But if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. These birds were my destiny and I love 'em.

Absolutely great video, your understanding of parrots is fantastic. Emotions, hormones, mess, more emotions, more mess, biting. They are like two year olds running around with scissors! A couple of things though. I would love to see you talking about giving your baby a mate. Parrots should never be alone. They need a partner and we can never truly be that to them. We can be a parent bird and part of their flock though. If we spend plenty of time with them they are still part of our family, our friends, our cheeky little ratbags. Cages.... they should be your babies safe haven, not their prison. Give them the biggest space you can, lots of natural browse and foraging opportunities. Plus yeah ... their mate.
@Nil_Echo7 жыл бұрын
Doves - an excellent alternative if you don't feel up to taking care of a parrot. They're quite domesticated, they're not as smart as parrots and so don't require as much mental stimulation as parrots and they're MUCH quieter.

Every time I go to a petshop and see some of the beautiful parrots for sale, it breaks my heart wondering what might happen to them. I'm always hoping that whoever gets one of these birds has done their research and is ready for the commitment. Also, another point I'd add is cost, not just after the purchase of the bird but for the rest of the birds life. Cages, toys and food are all so expensive when it comes to birds. Whilst you can get a lot of cheap products for other pets, for birds it doesn't seem to be the case. Here in Australia I need to pay around $30 for a 2kg bag of quality bird pellets. In a lot of stores they offer cheap bird seed and no pellet range, Australia is lacking greatly on parrot food. Most of our brands only offer seed and the selection of pellets is tiny.

I totally agree with everything you said. I have a Severe Macaw and a Caique. They are my babies! But they are also everything you said. I do want to add a couple of things. If you want a bird for the singing and the beauty, can I suggest a canary? They do require feeding and cage cleaning! But they don’t want or require a bond with their owner. Also, I’d like to suggest for people that are really interested in owner a bird that you CAN bond with, start with a smaller bird. A parakeet, or a Cockatiel or budgie. Their lifespans aren’t quite as long as a Macaw’s or a Parrot’s. And their beaks are smaller so they aren’t as intimidating. Their poop is smaller, their cage requirements are smaller, and their voices are also. But Marlene is 100% correct, everything she said is the truth.
@AdahLael6 жыл бұрын
Actually cockatiels and budgies are some of the parrots (and yes, they are also parrots) which are the most abused because people think they are "beginner birds" and "throw away birds" because they are cheap. However, cockatiels can live 30 years or more and budgies can live 8-15 years depending. Cockatiels are very smart as well, though of course not as smart as a cockatoo or large bird, but they are just as emotionally attached to their owners. Also: a small beak actually hurts more when they bite! Seriously! A larger parrot seems like it could do more damage, but smaller birds in my experience bite more often, and their bites hurt a LOT more. Plus small birds are not necessarily quieter... budgies are yes, but for example Sun Conures are some of the loudest parrots and can give you hearing damage if they are unhappy.

Marlene my female ringneck has gotten hormonal and if that wasn't enough she is laying on four of five unfertile eggs which one broke and under the cover I was bit on only on ankle but I didn't have the chance to get what happened but she bit me where I fell then attacked me. I turned away and left the room. I just had a new best box come and I used it for cockatiels but it's in her cage but I found four eggs and I felt like she needed a peanut once as I put her in the cage where this nest box I have put her eggs in and it's got a ladder to get into it so I could leave cage open. I am not able to get the gym for the new Grey who is not tame yet .He bit me on my arm but I was asleep next to him and it didn't hurt. I got him to perch on my arm after showers and the minute my hand was exposed he bit more and blood. I am working on video. I lost my conure March 1 and she was found May 19. So glad I have her back but I am so sad that my ringneck is reverted to this hormonal way. I will also have to say she is always looking at the mirror. I am not sure but I took her man away. She bit me then kisses me . I want any hints on what is best calcium?? And diarrhea??

Everything you said is true! I have a Sun Conjure I rescued when he was eleven, and he is now twenty two. I have become his mate, and he attacks my husband if he comes near me! I tried to prevent this behaviour but have failed miserably. If I go away for a few days the bird attaches to my husband easily, and when I come home he is so confused, but in a few days he attaches to me again. He is with me all day, and I love him as a child, but also feel bad because he doesn't have a normal birdie life in the wild with his own mate to rear babies with etc. My husband loves him too, if only from a distance, and his patience is amazing. If I had it to do over again, I would not get a parrot, well, maybe a parakeet! It takes a special person with the right circumstances and a great understanding of these very smart and wonderful creatures, so please think it over well!

Very well stated. I couldn't have said it better myself. The only thing I would change is your title. I would have it read "Eleven things to consider before even thinking about getting a parrot". The other thing I tell people is to start small by getting a Parakeet or Canary and get books or go to the library and learn all you can about them about feeding and caring for them. Then as you gain experience, if you are still interested, move up to a larger bird, day like a Lovebird or Cockatiel. Than try moving up to some of the more exotic birds if you still are interested and like parrots type birds as pets / companions. I had 20 years experience with Parakeets before I dared take on my first parrot. It was a Hawhs Macaw, the smallest of all the Macaws. We named him Sparkly and boy was he a super smart bird. Probably the smartest of the 5 parrots that have been part of our family.

I honestly had no idea about all these things so if I ever get a bird it won't be one that is as smart and long living as parrots. It makes me sad that there are probably so many parrots living in really sad conditions.

We don't go visit family because traveling and taking 3 on the road is worrisome as well as housing them and keeping them safe with a travel cage. Then our family smokes SO not bringing that around them.

I was smoking quite a bit of weed when I brought my bird home from the pet store, I have since quit and won't allow ANY smoking around him. I love my bird dearly, and I want him to live a very long and happy life.

This is so important guys!!!! I know birds are amazing but damn this is honestly the entire truth (apart from certain things my bird luckily doesn't do because she's a weirdo) at my school we have to each choose a charity organization or make one up for something we are compassionate about and do this big presentation so people will donate and I'm collecting money to help a local parrot store that is desperately in need of renovation. My presentation is Including so many reasons why parrots are amazing and so many reasons not to get a parrot and I actually get to bring my parrot to school for the presentation. Research is so important before getting a bird guys!!

Ahh! Rest in literal pieces the many keyboards my indian ringneck has gotten its beak on over the years. Thankfully he's broken the habit now and doesn't care at all about keyboards now but back in the day he'd attack any keyboard on sight, I don't think anyone can really understand how good birds are at removing keys from keyboards without seeing it themselves. They're so good at it, it's terrible XD This is such a great video, you couldn't be more right about everything you've mentioned. I don't think you could've explained the more difficult parts of bird parenthood any better. People always joke about crazy cat ladies, but honestly I think us crazy bird people are on another level. Adopting a bird isn't just adopting a permanent child, it's adopting an entirely new lifestyle along with it and you've covered that so well in this video!

Your first reason we tell everyone! ! You will be parent/parents of toddlers for a looooong time! ! They do miss family when they are not home my husband feels so guilty for having to work away from home. We have not taken an overnight trip much less a vacation since getting out pair of Sun Conures! We simply don't trust anyone to care for them properly. It's much harder than babysitting children, as every bird is so so unique! !

"If you're not ready for a toddler, you're not ready for a bird." Very good advice. Maybe this wouldn't be as true for much smaller birds like finches, but for companion parrots it is. I've a beautiful crazy Jardine feathered dinosaur child, so I'm not just speaking from zero experience. Definitely do you research and find a companion dinosaur with a personality and needs that you're capable and in want of meeting. Remember, many parrots can outlive you, so you're adding a family member to your home that will be with you to the very end. For someone who's prepared and ready for such a special relationship, a dinosaur can make an excellent and wonderfully endearing friend :)

My pet bobwhite quail have all of the attributes that you explain in your video. They hold grudges, too! Still, they are the best little birds in the world. I have a cage for them but they are always free to move around and sleep anywhere in the house they want. Ginger sleeps on her pillow next to me, and Flipper sleeps in his favorite spot in the bathroom. My two quail have the same disposition as a cockatiel, only the quail can’t talk. They do make conversational birdie sounds to vocalize what they’re thinking or if they’re mad about something, particularly the male. I really enjoy your insightful and fun videos. Thank you for keeping them coming. I know there is a lot of work that goes into making these, and I wanted to tell you thank you. Enjoy your day!

I have two cockatiels and I love them both to pieces. Just the other day they got out of my closed in porch and was outside for hours. Anything could of happened to them but luckily they were safe. While searching for the second bird I went behind my neighbor's house (she has parrots) and found her blue and yellow macaw with his head stuck between the garage door and her house. If I had not of been there and contacted her he would have died because she only visits her house once a week to care for her birds. If you are wondering how it happened he got out of his cage and saw an opening at the top of the door and wedged his head.

I agree.. People see all of the funny videos of birds and want one. They don't see the negative side of it, like how most big birds will outlive you. That is a hard concept for most to grasp I think. They also don't realize, a socialized bird requires ALOT of attention, so unless you want a mean or unhappy bird, be prepared to treat it like you would a kid and give it alot of attention and love. My birds spend all of their awake time (minus if I have to go to the store, doctors etc) outside of their cages. I work from home so can be with them most of their lives. I love your birds, they are awesome and thank you for making this video!

This is a wonderful video. I've owned birds all of my life, albeit nothing bigger than a cockatiel. As you say, if someone asked me to choose between them and my bird, there'd simply be no option! :D They are a completely different pet to a cat or a dog. I'd love to own one of the large parrots, but I know it's simply not practical or fair to the parrot with my busy lifestyle, so I watch KZbin videos of parrot owners instead! Interestingly enough, I've never actually been bitten by one of my pet birds. I have had them get cross with me, but I've only ever been butted with an open beak. I was bitten by a friend's cockatiel when I was showing my friend how to give her bird medicine in a syringe- her bird was less than impressed and bit right through my finger! I had to pause this video part way through because my cockatiel demanded head scritches and then wanted me to bring her some food, actually! As you say, they are demanding of your time in a way a dog or a cat really is not.

according to the first reason, I need to give them attention and not keep them in a cage forever, I have to technically do the following: Quit school, Never use technology ever again, never play with my other pets and all? ;-;
@letsnotdothat9756 жыл бұрын
You can have other pets, but not cats because their saliva is poisonous. You can use technology every once in a while. As for school: you need two birds in order to do that
@letsnotdothat9756 жыл бұрын
@Billy Storm As a general rule of thumb, yes you can do that. However some species will require more space (like a room/ aviary) and more stimulus. As long as they seem happy and healthy there shouldn't be a problem.
@letsnotdothat9755 жыл бұрын
@Noodle Nora It really depends on the type of bird you're talking about. If they're a more social bird prone to depression, it's not a good idea. If your bird can handle being alone it should be alright. Do a bit of experimentation with your bird, see how their mood changes after doing this for a week.

Great video! Reason number one is probably why I don't have one. I have lots of reptiles and tarantulas because they're super low maintenance. But then out of my 2 dogs, I have one that's crazy smart. I knew he was smart when I adopted him but it wasn't until a private trainer worked with him and alerted to me how smart he actually is. He needs SO MUCH mental stimulation on a daily basis. We've been working on random service dog tasks so that he has a "job" to do during the day and if we don't do any work he will go and find something in the house to get into. Every day I wake up and start thinking about what I can do to keep him busy for the day. So for now I have my "magpie" lol, cuz he's black and white!

what I'm worried about is the Budgies, their cheap and everywhere, and anyone can impulsivly buy one because their cute and they seem to be cuddly. (not all budgies are cuddly, a lot are hyper and excited.)but equipment for budgies is super cheap when you dont get the right things, and anyone anywhere can just decide to buy a budgie without doing reassearch. for macaws and bigger birds, they are usually really expensive, and not a lot of people have thousands of dollars in their pocket to take one home impulsivley. I'm not saying it doesnt happen, but birds like Conures, cockatiels and especially budgies are in danger because of how cheap they are.
