Birbsquad! My Quaker Parrot can now talk and he has been talking up a storm lately! I'm so excited to tell you what this crazy parrot has been saying lately and what I think encouraged Popples to start talking.
I am not a 100 percent sure on why my Quaker Parrot chose this word to start saying but here are a few of my ideas as well as tips and tricks to hopefully encourage your parrot to start talking.
If you have any ideas or your own strategies that has helped your parrots start talking please let us all know. Like I've said before there is not one master plan or guarantee to get a parrot to talk but we can definitely try some different strategies. Thank you all for always helping and encouraging other parrot owners.
Also please leave a heart emoji for our friend and fellow birbsquad member on the passing of her green cheek conure. If any of you have ever experienced the passing of a parrot or any animal for that matter... you know the type of pain she is going through. So let's be supportive and help each other through times like these.
Also welcome to the birbsquad Laura!! Hope you like this videos NIN shirt lol.
Here are my lovely fellow parrot KZbinrs that you should definitely check out. LOVE YA SO MUCH GIRLS!

I have been watching your videos none stop for three days straight! I have had a macaw, quakers prior, and Amazon's. All rescues and I was able to bond. I now have a new Quaker and I cannot get him to not hate me. Now I'm always touching his stuff and never had to do this before. I can really see the territory behavior. But I'm starting to think my birb is broke. So happy to be part of the squad!

We rescued a 10 year old green cheek named Hugo. His cage was not cleaned for over a year and the owner said he didn't have enough time for his care. He smelled of beer and smoke💀. He was also missing a toe😥 He is quite sweet but has mood swings (cant blame him). The more enriching activity we give him the more he is calming down. We are bonding with him so quickly, my 10 year old is his favorite 🤩 I was able to get him to say "pretty bird" the first week we had him and he was never a talker with his old owner. We are lucky to have Hugo.🦜 Your videos have been very helpful on this journey. Thank you Victoria 🥰

I once had a Cockatiel who obviously chose what he wanted to learn to say. When he heard something he wanted to learn, he would get very close to my mouth and turn his head sideways to listen. Once I had said it four or five times, he began to say it himself. It was funny. He called any four legged animal that he saw out the window a "puppy dog." (Squirrel, Cat, Dog, whatever LOL.)

My first bird back in 1994 was a Quaker I named Peek-A-Boo. He Learned that word first then quickly learned others! Over a 200 word vocabulary including the whole You Are My Sunshine song and Macho Macho Bird (like the Macho Man by the Village People) My BeBe Parrot sang both songs too! My Grey could mimic our voices so clearly. I have always had great talkers. I just brought home my first baby green cheek today who will go to my day care everyday. Hoping she talks too!

Girlfriend who is grieving her GC Conure. So sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you...Your loss reminds me of the pets that I've lost in one way or another. Whether it's our fault or not because we are responsible for them and because guilt is a natural part of grief. Please let go of that part because you know you loved and cared for your bird to the best of your ability. I pray you find peace and comfort.

Good for you Popples. You are right about putting emotions when you teach your bird. My moustache parakeet is talking now. What I have observed is when teaching your bird to talk is put the action to the word, for instance when I first see him in the morning, I say good morning and at bedtime I say goodnight and that way they can associate the word with the action. I also say breakfast when feeding breakfast etc. Instead of your bird mimicking he can associate actions with words. They also pick words that are easy to say. Sorry about your friends conure passing 😓

My green cheek’s first word was “pretty bird.” In the morning I would uncover her and say “Hi pretty bird!” in an enthusiastic tone. I think this worked partially because birds are typically very excited to see you in the morning, and they seem to be more focused on what you are doing or saying.
@VictoriaRyann

Oh I love this advice thank you Kaylee!! Love how your bird says pretty bird that is so cute. I can definitely see that though cause my birds go nuts in the morning when I walk in lol. Maybe really focus on saying words enthusiasticly in morning and night? Thank you so much!

LOL Victoria! Right on! He said, Peekaboo as clear as day AND he said *Yoshi* did you catch it? Remember my Quaker, Peekaboo I've spoken about before? He was a BIG & very clear talker w/a HUGE vocabulary. He was repeating words the 1st time hearing them. He also started putting words together. My Quaker's name was Peekaboo & that was his only word he knew at the time I rescued his previous owners from Peekaboo. He was too much for them to handle & couldn't wait to send him home w/me. Their loss my gain because Peekaboo was a awesome bird!! Now that Popples has started talking he could very well start learning new words much more quickly because he knows it excites you & makes you happy & most of all because he'll figure out you will engage him more. Exciting!!! You will have such a blast watching him learn new words & even understand the meaning of words he's saying. Way to go Popples!!!! 🤣🤣👍👏👏

@@VictoriaRyann Popples knows his name just like he knows who Yoshi is. Try this, have your hubby be in the room with you & Popples alone, without Yoshi. Leave the room & say *good bye*. After you leave have your hubby call you to return by the name you want Popples to call you by. Ask him to say, *Victoria* or *Mom* & then return to the room. Do it a few times, this is how he'll figure out your name & before you know it, he will be calling you by your name. This is how you teach Popples the meaning of words, by putting action to the words. He will figure this out very quickly & will begin putting 2 or more words together. Example: *Bye Mom* or *Mom, come here*. Reverse & call your husband into the room & then your daughter. He will know every family members name & will call whichever one of you he wants. It's a really fun game to play. Popples will want to show off to show you how good he is so make sure you praise him like crazy. He will be so excited.

@@VictoriaRyann Yes no kidding when Yoshi was coming up behind Popples ...Popples said Yoshi several times. Then Peekaboo then Yoshu again take another listen to him when you were filming him at his cage. Yes the little one is getting to know everything, cause everything is new to her/ him. That is so fun introducing new things. Mango is her favorite. She likes apple but if I have been giving her mango by hand then switch to apple she will drop it immediately. So funny how they know what they like and show us that if we pay attention. I named the little cutie Daisy... cause she/ he looks like one. I can hear him say Yoshi while he is in the cage as well. I have a 8 month old Quaker. Clara currently says “Kiss” “Peekaboo” “Kennel!” “Chop Chip” and makes several noises. Kisses, beginning of Mockingbird whistle, barks like a dog. I think it’s all about the emotion and just resonate a good memory. We do a lot of talking in the shower which is Clara’s favorite place. She gets tomato’s which are a huge rare treat when she masters something new. It is all about the game for them. They like to be entertained and play with us. 💙🐦🦖🦜

I think he said peekaboo because it was something you consistently said in context, and the context (suddenly looking at him) was fun. Parrots love that game like children do. It was one of the first things my IRN said too, and he still likes to play it most days, turning his head away for a few seconds as I duck down or cover my eyes with my hand, then turning to look at me and say it at the same time I do. They tend to mimic things said at a high pitch and with interesting inflections, so if you want Popples to learn "hello" it needs to be exaggerated like you would to a baby or even more so. Mine also likes making a soppy exaggerated "awwww" sound and bowing his head at the same time for snuggles, haha, anything emotional in one way or another, as you said, and in context so it's meaningful and if possible serves a specific function to them, they possible they pick up fast. :)
@VictoriaRyann
@VictoriaRyann 4 жыл бұрын
Aweeee you're IRN sounds like an absolute sweetheart!!! I hope to get to that point of playing games with Popples the way you do with your bird. Sounds like so much fun to teach them things like that. Thank you so much for that advice if definitely makes sense the way you explained it. Tell your ringneck I said hi and hope both of you have a great week!

@@VictoriaRyann Hi Victoria, all you have to do is play it "at them", like you do a child, and he will start to copy what you do except without hands, he'll just turn away. Then voila, you have a game. ☺️ Bo also copies my occasional laughter after a peekaboo "reveal", haha, which obviously isn't real laughter as birbs don't have diaphragms. P. S. Watching this again, you might have accidentally used Dr. Irene Pepperberg's Model-Rival Technique, in which you show them a behaviour that gets positive results for someone else, and unlike dogs, parrots and corvids are intelligent enough to try out what others do for themselves in the hope of the same results. It's how a city taught wild crows to put rubbish in bins for rewards. So maybe Popples saw and heard Emory getting attention and excitement from the peekaboo game and felt left out!

My parents quaker, nelly, is a few months old and started talking today for me only. She spoke kore in 20 mins than she has in the entire 6 weeks weve had her. She clearly said peek a boo, pretty bird, and whatchadoin and gave her own reflection alot of vocal, chattery love lol Then she got cranky from molting and bit the crap out of my chest while sitting on the couch. It was a good day for her.

My Quaker , we got him when he was about 9 years we believe. We think he was a Breeder bird, his band was wrong, he came with no papers, and he was traumatized from his before life so bad that the only thing he would do is hide in a corner, quake , back up, and shake his head no every time we tried to get close. He was obviously not talking at that point but about 3 ish months later he started saying mama and that was where it all started. As I’m typing he is yelling “hi bubba”, “Amber”, “watcha doin”, etc. it took my Quaker what we believe to be almost 9.5 years to talk or however old he is truly to this day so you should never under estimate another living being

Awe I love his story. Hate he had to go through all of that but so happy you both found each other 💜 the way some of these people treat birds is absolutely ridiculous. Hope we can eliminate at least some of that. But that's awesome he ended up talking!!! You are so right though we should definitely not underestimate another living being. Shouldn't have underestimated Popples cause wow I was starting to believe he wasn't going to talk. But thank you again for sharing your birds story it was so sweet to read and comes to show just how strong parrots are especially when they have a strong human companion with them! Thank you again Amber ☺️

Victoria Ryann Victoria Ryann exactly. I definitely wish I could save ALL of the hurt birds but that’s just a dream so I will continue to care for the ones I have access to as one would do, I also think a lot about that saying “bird brained” when people use that as an insult, in most cases birds are more superior to humans and again should not be underestimated. I love sharing these types of stories, they seem so unreal at times and I love it, I wish everyone could look at birds the way a bird parent does. Thank you for responding, I can tell popples is going to do incredible things on a bird level... or maybe a human level, never know!!! 💕

The more you talk to your Quaker the more he will talk. My Pickles (Quaker) chatted with me ALL day long. She would be in my room yelling "I WANNA KISS" When she was alone. Its was SO ADORABLE!! Quakers are SO SMART!! She said Pickles is a pretty bird... The more I laughed she would minic my laugh it was HILARIOUS.. I loved her with EVERYTHING in me. I cried she cried.. When I decided to move to El Paso I stayed with a friend & her dog killed pickles I was DEVASTATED my last video is her singing on our road trip.. I also taught her to fly back to me. She was something special.. Quakers are the best birds. Ive raised them over 20yrs now. I'll never go think otherwise. They are so INTELLIGENT

Hey silly girl!! Popples was saying "peek a boo", but he did say "Yoshi" for sure! Congrats , I know I told you that Jake does talk many phrases and words but Isn't it so exciting!! I've heard that if you have more than one bird, usually they can teach each other words! So Hey, just love it! Thanx for sharing this with us, I love you soo much, P.s., I consider you my friend, because of your personality and how similar you and I raise our birbs!!! Can't wait for more of your exciting vids., and there is never a dull moment on your videos!!! Lol Oh and with Jake I talk to him while we are moving from room to room and I tell him what I'm doing, he picks up on it bigtime, example: I'll say "let's go upstairs then I will say let's go upstairs and take a bath, so now he says "let's go upstairs and take a bath" as soon as me and Jake enter the bathroom! Weird, I know but it's true. When I want him to go potty on the wastebasket in a certain room, he now says "Jake go potty" as soon as I set him on the basket! Anyway I could give better examples but pretty sure you get my drift! Lol It's like he is putting the words in context, he will say step up before I ask him, totally strange but I still say it anyhow after he says it( like you were just telling us) HAPPY DAYS!👍👍👍🤣😘

@@VictoriaRyann I am doing well 🙃 and so is my girl (the rainbow lorikeet). I thought that she wouldn't talk either untill she surprised us by saying her first word which was 'Salam' (means Hello in Farsi). She has a special bond with my husband and my husband always greets her with this word every morning (he says it in a childish way) and that's her first word.... Not the kind words that I use or songs that I sing to her. Well, the emotions are why birds learn swear words 😜

I needed this video! Ugh, I bought a yellow sided green cheek (my first GCC) 6 weeks ago as a tiny little baby. He was still naked with just his little pin feathers coming in when I bought him. So, I’ve been going to this little bird store every week since then to spend time with him since I can’t bring him home for another 4 weeks until he’s old enough. I’m not exactly a novice bird owner, I’ve had cockatiels and budgies, but never conures. It seems like my last few visits haven’t gone well at all and it’s been discouraging. At first, I was having such a great time bonding with him and he was sweet as could be, then something shifted for whatever reason. Now all he wants to do is fly away from me and bite whenever I go to get him back. This little “mom and pop” type bird store is always crowded with a ton of people and the store itself is small and crowded with a nursery, cages, toys, bird food aisles, etc. So, when he flies away, it’s really difficult. I have to maneuver around all the people and things in the store to get him, and then he bites the shhhh out of me when I do. It’s very hard to bond with him under those conditions and it feels overwhelming. I’ve been implementing all the “no biting” tricks I’ve learned, but he still is a bitey little thing and sometimes won’t let go and just bites harder when I try things to get him to stop. I know once I get him home, it’ll be much easier to work with him and a less overstimulating environment. I just hate that I’m essentially a sitting duck right now and each visit causes me more anxiety. I love seeing these positive videos! It helps me relax a little knowing that one day, we’ll get there!

Awe girl that sounds rough!!! Sounds like you have a great outlook on the situation though and good you're looking ahead thinking of the positives. Yeah when they are that young it is vital they get as much human interaction and hands on socialization as possible. Definitely makes things hard on you right now. But yes keep thinking positive things will get better. Once things get settled and he's finally home let me know if you need anything. I'll try to help ya out as much as possible and I'm sure people here will as well. It will get better I promise 💜 you're already an amazing bird mama

First, I would like to send love to the friend that lost her bird. I'm so sorry you are going through such a painful time. Victoria, I have a yellow sided conure too. He is 1 1/2. I had also heard about taking to them at night for about a half hour before you put them to bed. If there was a specific word you wanted them to say, you repeat it multiple times . He was three months old when we brought him home and it was within about a month he started talking. He also learned the whistle I use to call my dog and now when he can't see me, he uses the whistle to get me to come back. I was wondering while watching the video if you would stop tapping and see the mess they made on the couch. It was hilarious that you tapped the end with that bit! Popples is beautiful! They seem to be a very sweet bird.
