Hey Birbsquad. In this video I'm going to talk about mistakes that I have made with my parrots that I hope you don't do as well. As a beginner parrot owner, I listened to the wrong types of people and was highly misinformed due to the internet. Please listen to what I have to say and decide on what works for you and your birds lifestyle. Even though no one likes to talk about the mistakes they've made with their parrots especially in a judgmental community like ours...its important to learn from one another. We are all here for the birds so lets start acting like it.
If there is a certain mistake you've made with your parrots, please let us know so we can learn from one another. Do not be judgmental to others or I will cyber slap you.

For some context in regards to the flight suit. I am a father of three kids. When I drive my main focus, and by mean I mean absolute only focus is driving and being safe. If I'm in a situation where I'm driving and I am aware of the vehicles behind me and the situations to the sides of me, and a bird, or dog or any animal gets in front of my vehicle.... If I can see that slamming my brakes will get us a rear-ended, and that will jeopardize the safety of my kids, the truth is that I am going to hit whatever animal is in my way because that's less likely to injure my children. I don't care if it's a wild goose, a wildcat, or somebody's pet dog. My children's safety is more important. So having that flight suit makes complete sense because it gives you that control as the pet owner.

3 years ago, when I got my first bird, a Cockatiel, I knew nothing about birds, I went into a bird specialty store and walked out in tears, feeling like the worst person in the world and having no business owning a bird. The guy who owned the store, the expert, said, I was doing everything wrong! That I was going to have a whole slew of behavior issues. I called the breeder, that I got my Cockatiel from and she encouraged me to keep going what I am doing. Well, 3 years later, I have a happy, well adjust, no behavior issues bird! I hear horror stories about Cockatiels, 90% of the time when I tell a person, that I have a Cockatiel, you wouldnt believe how many people hate Cockateils. 99% of the advice given, I dont do. And I have the best Cockatiel on the planet.
@zacreea

Its sucks on how right you are, my husband hates cockatiels just because his friend had a mean one. I had a pretty bad cockatiel as a kid but i chalked it up to me just being a little kid and messing up that poor bird in some way. Now that im an adult i wouldnt mind having one but its off the table because of my husbands hatred for them. Hes also never owned a bird till i brought our quaker home and hes in love with him. Im sure hed love a cockatiel too if he gave one the chance. He actually wants his own bird now since my quaker isnt a huge fan of other people( doesnt bite just wont step up or let other people kiss him)

I love this video so much. There is so much pressure, especially in today’s society, to be the perfect bird (or pet) owner. And if you make a mistake, people are so quick to berate. Quite frankly, it sucks. We should be helping to educate people and not just tearing people down. We all have to learn. Yes, yes, yes to not trusting everything you see on the internet! I can think of a very popular channel on KZbin that seems to be many peoples’ holy grail for getting info, particularly for green cheeks, that is not always very accurate. And like you said, we’re all human. It happens. But people really take everything that’s on that channel and run with it, and when some try to politely correct the misinformation, the pitchforks come out. Make an informed judgement. Don’t just go to one source for information. Keep looking, learning, researching and then you’ll have a good solid ground to stand on. :) Also loved what you had to say about unacceptable behaviors. When a dog always goes to the bathroom in a house, no one in their right mind would just say “They’re animals, they go where they want to. Just accept it.” You’d train them. Birds use their beaks and all birds bite, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be corrected when they use their beak inappropriately.

Yes girl you are so right! The amount of pressure and the way some treat one another is ridiculous. We are all here in the first place because we love birds. We should learn from one another and not one single person has all the answers. Thank you for your input and I'm glad you understand where I'm coming from with this as well. You're awesome and hope you have a great week ☺️

If a Dog went in house to do its needs, again, the Owner neglected the Dog when a Dog would bark for out. I owned Dogs, they're the most Important Animal in a Human Being Life. I've seen an owner teach their Dog to pick up the receiver and dial 911. A live person got on the phone and said "911 can I help you?" The Dog BARKED.... THAT DOG SAVED ITS OWNER! Can a Green Cheek Conuse do this? Biting is a real annoying situation for me and many other Green Cheek Conuse Owners. Even you criticized Green Cheek Conuse.

Thank you for making this video, because mistakes (others and our own teach us alot. It's an animal they're unpredictable and not all breeds have the exact same temperament, because they're INDIVIDUAL! No one is a pefect parent with their own kids because it's a learning curve and that's the same for any animal. People that persecute someone for mistakes, instead of teaching them have to rectify those mistakes in the future just make others scared to ask questions. If anyone cares about animals then criticism should be handed out lightly to improve the animals welfare, not to boost your "I KNOW EVERYTHING" arrogance.

ive always admired how humble you are. a lot of bird youtubers and ppl on the internet have such a holier than thou complex and always try to say why people should not get a bird. if you are consistently dedicated to learning your birds body language and testing out many options to find out what works best with them u will end up with a strong trusting relationship.

Awe thank you!!! If I ever became arrogant I think my family would slap me across the head back into reality 😂 but yeah I agree with you and I don't understand why and maybe it's just from my personal experience.. but seems to be worse in the bird world. Plus jerks that are going to be cruel and hateful to birds probably isn't the type to be on KZbin watching bird help videos. We are all here in the first place because we love birds. This parrot owner civil war is ridiculous. But yes I agree with you being consistently dedicated, learning parrots body language, and having a big heart for birds is key. You're awesome and thank you again for your input 😊

You are adorable!! I get frustrated with the internet there is a lot of bad info out there!! I think it's great that you are willing to share your mistakes so others can see that it's ok to make mistakes just learn from it and move on!! There is also a lot of shaming also, if you didn't rescue or happened to buy your bird from a pet store. Rescuing isn't for everyone or available to everyone. We all just need to keep learning and loving and being dedicated to our feathered babies!! 85% of parrots are given up so any help you offer is giving these babies a better chance for a forever home!! Love you girl!💕 Keep doing what your doing!!😘🐦

Oh my gosh you just summed up my feelings in one comment thank you!!! Parrot owner shaming is ridiculous and if you don't rescue a bird oh my Lord you're prob going to Birdy hell 💀 why we all can't love and help one another is beyond me. We are all here on KZbin in parrot channels in the first place because we love birds. How about we attack the morons that purposely hurt birds and improper breeding instead of attacking each other. Anyway rant over thank you for listening and ranting along with me Wendy 😂 hope you've been having a fun vacation. You're awesome you're the best and you make me smile. Have a great week girlfriend!

The main points: 1- taking the bird everywhere without a flight suit 2- letting them eat all day > make a feeding schedule 3- letting them have too much free time out of the cage without being involved 4- making your hand negative like swatting the bird away off your head 5- getting a huge cage full of everything they need > have a sleeping cage without toys and a play cage. Separate them. 6- accept misbehaviour from your bird. 7-trusting others Blindly on information about caring for your bird. Be an independent thinker .. Thank you! #birbsquad

Thank you for Sharing this video! It’s really important to have harness on your bird when you are hanging out with them outdoor. My vet told me about this when he saw me walking out of the room with my bird on my shoulder. I'm a first time bird owner, she's a Quaker Parrot that will be ordered next month. I'm going to have a sleeping cage, a play cage for if I'm at work, and a set up in the living room common area for bonding. Do you think they ever get territorial about their play cage/daytime cage? Like will they not want to come out when I get home to socialize with me? I want to train her to be social (with boundaries of course) but I don't want her to prefer to be alone with her toys in the play cage all the time!

Hi there!! I’m bringing home a 4 month old blue Quaker next week. I’m going every morning to the pet store for bonding time until everything is set up. I’m a first time bird owner. Not sure of the sex but, that’s ok. I’m sure my vet will help with that. If you can give me any advice for a first time parrot owner? Your videos are awesome!!! Lots of info. But, I’m starting to feel very nervous. And yes my nesting instinct is so kicking in. Haha. Yes, I have other pets. Fish tank, 60 gal hex, a dog, a cat, a gerbil and a goldfish pond in my backyard. And an 8 year old daughter.

Im a new bird owner and i have a parrotlet for THE past 9 months. The first 6 months were the best. But the last 3 months its been the worst. He's been territorial and been biting a lot and i have to be honest i been yelling at him. I know i should have but im human. Now we dont have the best relationship. Im thinking maybe he should go with some one else now that i most likely messed up our relationship.

Naw, he just got comfortable and now he's being a 2 year old, just like human kids. "I have learned the rules. Now, how much can i push em?????" Patience, repetition and a sense of humor. You have adopted a teeny tiny perpetual toddler. He weighs 2 oz; you weigh . . .i don't know but you an adult human. You win. Remember that. Give your parrotlet games to play. Things to forage for. When he gets rude, put him back before he starts biting. Take him out of the cage with a stick instead of your finger; territorial is real. Frankly, what worked for my gcc and biting was the beak grabandshake. I know- not supposed to. Worked for us.

She is also clipped and I'm scared she will end up hurting herself. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how to build up the strength in her feet so that she can hold on properly.

My Quaker has NEVER bit to where he broke skin or even hurt me. When he started to bear down I gave him a stern NO BITE and he KnoWs better. He will try to nip at my son's which are 18 and over because they play more rough with him but he definitely understands and is very close to all of us and respects us just like we respect him. But the stern tone works for me or telling him he is being naughty. He knows exactly what I'm meaning by my tone and words

okay i need some birdie advice. i have 6 birds, 5 cockatiels and a pineapple green cheek. the cockatiels are a flock and three of them are the babies of the other two. i didn’t have time to train them when they hatched because i’m a student so i’m used to just letting the cockatiels do their own thing. they stay in my room so in the morning i let them out to play with the toys i leave in my room for them and they’re happy that way, but i want to create a bond with my green cheek whom i’ve had for three weeks. i don’t want to keep my green cheek in her cage while the others are out so that she feels left out but i also don’t want to leave all 5 cockatiels who are used to being out all day in their cage.

Hey there! So Ollie has been biting more frequently but only when we try to get him to step up. Its not all the time but more than we would like. We also have the separate sleep and play cages, and we always remain calm when he bites. Im a lot faster with reflexes so he really never gets me often. Anyway, I have read this is a hormonal thing as he is just over a year old. Again, he doesnt just come over and bite. Is this normal?
@VictoriaRyann
@VictoriaRyann 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve yeah that sounds like a hormonal thing to me as well. Is he anywhere near the cage or toys when you try to get him to step up? Since that's more than likely what it would be maybe it would be best to avoid the stepping up for a while. You can offer your arm covered by a jacket sleeve or a perch. Does he look like he's going to start molting? That can be another reason why he's being a bit cranky lately 😬

Terry Maskell 1 week ago Terry Maskell Hi. Thank you for your videos. They were helpful in understanding Conure behavior. I have a 6 year old conure (jackie) and a 5 year old female (Cookie). Jackie, who I believe is Male, is the cuddlyest of the two of them, ..always nuzzleing up to my lips and allows me to stoke him from head to wings with my lips BUT....sometimes (a lot lately) he will get on to my shoulder in the morning when I am about to clean his cage & refresh his food and bite my ear very hard....even drawing blood. He has also bit my hand for no reason and has drawn blood from my hand as well. This seems to happen all to oftern now. I am wondering if the following has something to do with this: My wife passed away in September and I am wondering if this is happening because he is wondering where she went. They were the best of friends. She was awesome to him. He seems to be angry all of a sudden. She raised him from a baby. He has always been sweet and cuddly and had never bit me o(or her) once in the previous 5 years. She taught him to cuddle and to talk (he can say about 5 or six things). She could do anything with him and he didn't mind. She'd turn him upside down, kiss his belly, pet his back etc. He will not allow me to put a hand on his back or allow me to gently pet his head. He WILL NOT allow me to lay hand on hm. He will come to me when called, get on my finger and we will cuddle for an hour as he chortles and talks contently. He can be sooo sweet. Next day he attacks me for no reason at all. Those bites really hurt. I tried grabbing his beak like you suggested (and saying "no bite") but as soon as I grab it he bites me again. Strangely enough, my other bird (Cookie) used to bite periodically for the first couple years but since my wife has passed away he no longer bites me. Back when he did bite me I would shake my finger at him and say "NO BITE, NO TREAT". Now....when Jackie bites me and I say "NO BITE" the other bird pipe us from his cage and says "NO TREAT". I don't know what to do. This bird is the sweetest thing...until he's not. I tried some of your other suggestions (by saying "NO" and turning my atteniton away). nothing seems to be working. Got any ideas?? Thank again for your fun and informative videos. Terry (Hamilton, Ontario)

@VictoriaRyann
@VictoriaRyann 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thank you so much for your compliments 💜 sounds to me there's a bit of a jealousy prob going on. Well id make your main focus trying to form a bond with your bf and the bird. You may need to be out of the room for a lot of this depending on how severe the jealousy is. Is your bf willing to be super involved for a while? Id start out with having your bf feed him treats while the bird is in the cage. He can feed it to him using a spoon so he doesn't get bit. Find little tasks like that where your bf is involved but safely and avoiding biting all together. Another thing u can do that sounds ridiculous but trust me on this... Is you be the one to get the bird out of the cage first thing in the morning wrapped in a towel. Once the bird is calm, hand him over to your bf to hold. When he feels comfortable and the bird is calm, have your bf give him little pets on his head. When the bird gets to the point where he's still wrapped up but not trying to bite your bf, have your man give the bird a treat to reward the calm behavior. Do the same when it's time to put the bird back in his cage. You wrap up the bird in a towel then hand him over to your bf. Let him pet the bird, give a treat, and put him back in the cage for bed. You can also have your man spend time with the bird in a quiet calm room without you to get an idea on how he acts and see if this helps. You can even have your man try target training with him as well. How do these ideas sound? If we need to think of something else that fits you guys more let me know. Hopefully some others will give some input as well... We can get this taken care of ☺️
