I remember wanting a budgie at first, I just fell in love with them right away. I continued to just watch the same budgie videos over and over again for probably two months, at this point I was absolutely convinced that I would get a budgie in the future. Then my grandmother's cockatiel passed away. The fella lived all his life imprisoned in a cage, on an all-seed diet, having only two dowel perches and a bell that didn't make any sound. My grandma didn't know any better, and just never thought that maybe birds could be more than just something pretty to look and listen at. Though she adored him, she never realized how cruel and unfair she was being to poor Romeo. He only lived 9 years, and now that I think about it, we never even knew for sure if he really was a male, he never sang all that much, and was actually quite shy, and sometimes territorial. I remember trying to get him to mimic short melodic tunes, mostly by Elvis Presley, and though I never accomplished it, we had some good times. He was never tamed, and sadly, freaked out every time we stuck our hand into his cage to clean his food and water dishes. After he passed I realized just how sad his life was, and decided to honor him by researching about cockatiels. This time, I absolutely went nuts. I developed this fondness to cockatiels to the extend that decided to go get one at a rescue, again, I think if Romeo had had the chance to have an owner that really cared properly for him, his life would have been much longer and happier, so I decided to be that better owner to other cockatiel that needed it. The rescue did not have any cockatiels, though it did have some other bigger birds. Though it caught my attention, I declined the offer to adopt a female quaker that had recently lost her companion. I knew I wouldn't have enough money or space for her. So then, on my way home, I realized how birds from pet stores are still very neglected, and decided to go take a look. I went to pet supermarket, and they had this very sad looking pied cockatiel. He fell in love with me, and I fell in love with him, so I decided that I would adopt him as soon as the cage I had ordered arrived. Sadly, by the time the cage arrived and I went to the store, other family had already adopted him. I WAS GETTING KINDA DEPRESSED BY NOW. I told the pet store to contact me if any cockatiels arrived At the end, about a month later, an employee from the store called me, and told me someone had left 4 baby cockatiels on the parking lot of the store. She told me the store couldn't take them in because it was against their policy, so she took them home temporarily, until she found them a better home. I ended up going to her house and adopting a three week old lutino cockatiel. It has been hard, and I'm sorry to say I made the mistake of taking Finn as a baby. At that age, they are very weak and can die easily from sour crop or common illnesses. Thus far, little Finn is doing quite well and already learned to fly (sorta). I just realized I'm telling you guys the story of my life lol, hope I didn't bore you

Sadly, Finn perished to an unknown disease a couple of months ago. We suspect it might have been caused by exposure to the outside world at such a young age (the parking lot). We also think it might have been caused by a genetic disease. As far as I know, only one of Finn's siblings made it to their 4th month. Not sure if that one's still alive tho, I lost contact with the person. I don't regret anything, but I just wish I had had the opportunity to do something for my tiny-tiel. I still hope my story inspires you to do what's right for you and your possible future companion.

Thank you. I decided to take some time before adopting a tiel again. I've fed Kookaburras on a deck overlooking the bay in Sydney each morning for a week or so, absolutely amazing! Flocks of wild Budgies are definitely way out in the red centre - whereas sulfur-crested cockatoos, galahs, lorikeets and rosellas hang out in the suburbs in our fruit trees :) Corellas hang out on the side of the road, lori and rosellas are in the tallest trees and fruit trees... cockies are tearing the siding off your house (or the bark from your trees!)!!!! We love our big urban parrots, but flocks of budgerigars are definitely a 'way-out-in-the-wilds-centre-of-Australia' thang.

My daughter has a passion for birds and we researched for nearly a year. We visited bird stores and rescues. We interacted with many different types and she just kept going back to budgies. On the day we actually bought her bird, we were looking at several cockatiels and she ended up bonding hard with a budgie. He’s now a treasured family member. What a delightful little companion. We were, however, looking for nothing bigger than a green cheek conure.

Yes! Budgies are great little birdies and I wish more people saw they have charms and value too, instead of treating them like a "test run" pet or "throw away" pet! Also let's be honest - some kids are careless and NOT gentle with things, and birds are very fragile! Unless a child can be gentle and understands be careful with a living creature, pets should really be the responsibility of the adults in the household and simply allow child interaction with careful supervision.
@VictoriaRyann

@@xoxoDayDreamingxoxo totally agree and it is very sad how budgies are used and treated. They deserve to be respected and appreciated for who they are. I'm there with ya on kids and budgies. They are over recommended for children and as a mother myself there is absolutely no way I'd get my daughter a budgie. However there are gentle kids out there that are old enough and ready. Like you said, they are so fragile and sometimes kids get careless.

Budgies are one of the best parrots. For their tiny size, budgies are as smart as, or smarter, that many larger birds. They have GREAT personalities! They are one of the best Talkers! And if you want an easy to tame budgie, get a very young bird (especially!!!if you buy one from a big box pet shop.) Better yet, get a BABY budgie from a breeder, who has been hand fed, or at least hand tamed. If you want a really tame bird, start off with just one, and spend a lot of time with him. Budgies are the best.

Just make sure you do the proper about of research. Find out what kind of bird/parrot you want exactly. Start out buying the cage and toys so you have all that stuff ready you don’t have to last minute but everything and set it up. Then I recommend spending some time at bird stores/rescues even before you buy the cage. See if there’s a bird you bond with. Even if you can’t find one you have a special bond with you’ll be able to get used to the noise and seeing the poop and see how they act on a daily basis

I got a lovebird from a backyard breeder when i was younger and didnt know any better and when i got him he was sick and had malnutrition problems and when i took him in he was so small he was probably about half a week old she gave me him for free cause she didnt want to deal with him and so i took him in. After i got him home i got him on some baby bird formula and had to feed him with a syringe and feed him every 2 hours 3hours 4 hours and on untill i got him weened off of it. Honestly i was expecting him to die, but he kept growing and started growing his feathers in and he kept getting bigger by the day and here we are two years later and he is a wonderful bird he cuddles me all the time he preens me like i was a bird he sits on my shoulder or head as i do stuff around the house and he has his own way of saying ''love you'' to me he whistles a certain tune everytime i say love you and when i do that he whistles the sound and he always comes up to my faces makes a smooch sound and makes the noise that means love you I love him so much (im 16 now and i was 14 when i got him ) Hes my baby and will always be . . . . My grandma and grandpa aleays get bit by him and say hes mean but when hes with me he always wants to be petted and wants head scratches cause hes a big baby still lol

I need help! I was wondering about getting a second budgie soon. I currently have one male budgie 8 months ago and he is 1 year old. He seems happy enough but sometimes he is really quiet and he is mostly a very sweet bird although does bite sometimes. He calls out for other birds and gets frightened easily. I am a student so I can’t really spend all the time I need with him this year. Next summer I would be I was thinking if I should get another budgie to keep him company? After watching your videos I am now loving green cheek conures. Is it possible for a budgie and a conure to get along? If that’s not possible maybe I should get a budgie for Diego(my other budgie) and a green cheek. I would love to but i’m not too sure if my parents would like it :/
@VictoriaRyann
@VictoriaRyann 5 жыл бұрын
Hey ☺️ yeah if anything I'd recommend another budgie. Green cheeks are great but the species as a whole can sometimes be a little too much for such a small bird like a budgie. I'd be worried the gcc would hurt him even if it's not intentional. Unless you happen to meet one that is very timid and laid back. Overall I'd say go for another budgie and they would keep each other occupied. Good luck to you and lil Diego and hope this helps

Victoria Ryann Diego isn’t very fond of being out of the cage that much so that’s why I was thinking I could maybe get him a friend and they would be in the cage together. So then If i did get a conure they could still come out but at different times? The budgies would both be happy in the cage and then I could spend time with the gcc which i really have an obsession with haha! thanks so much for the response!
@VictoriaRyann
@VictoriaRyann 5 жыл бұрын
@@geckogonkey799 yeah that would more than likely work out fine cause I wouldn't have the gcc and budgie in the same cage together. Typically gccs enjoy being social and out of the cage a lot so if he's in the cage with the budgie I'd be worried he would be getting a little antsy wanting out and in turn hurt the budgies lil toes. But yeah the budgies can be in the same cage. Then perhaps have the gccs cage near the budgies cage so they can see one another and interact. Eventually yeah all of them can be out in the same big open room if introductions went well. Sorry if I misunderstood your question or didn't explain well enough I'm currently chasing my daughter around haha. But yeah that kind of set up should work just fine. I understand your obsession with gccs they are great ☺️

I’m so glad someone is talking about the budgie thing, I didn’t get my budgie I just started feeding and taking care of him because another family member wouldn’t and me personally, I don’t like budgies as pets, they are easily scared and with how small they are it freaks me out. So when everyone is like get a budgie before you get any other bird I can’t help but be a little annoyed, no don’t get a budgie if that’s not the bird you want. Prepare for the bird you want by putting in the time of research and then get the bird you want or will at least like hanging out with

OMG! Finally someone said what I was thinking about for some time. I am so into parrots for couple weeks and doing total research of what would be the best species for first time and what I expect, what would fit the best to my life style and personality. And most of the time I see advices to take smaller, easier bird at first and then go for bigger. This is harmfull. I see now that there are middle size birds perfect for starters, sometimes even much better than budgies, cockatiels etc. Why would you take "easy" small bird just to eventually take bigger one and then what... you have two birds for 15-20 more years. It have pros and cons, but if you want a live companion, take ONE bird, just make a wise choice when it comes to a specie. Thank you for that video!

There is one of my friends who someday said he wants to get a cockatiel. I have a green cheek and I give him advice about things, talk about downfalls of birds, and tell him the size cage he needs the food his bird will need Etc. He’s determined to research and when he moves into his own place get a bird. Then there’s people like my brother roger and his well now ex girlfriend who immediately when they saw my bird said “I want one.” Then 5 minutes later they had to ask what kind of bird it is. It’s like “you don’t even know what kind of bird it is but you want one?” My green cheek is my first bird and I’m doing so well rn I want to someday get more birds and yeah I do want bigger birds someday but I also want to work in a bird store so I’m sure I’ll get experience

Awe heck yes super pumped for ya!!! Well I would say my biggest piece of advice is have fun with each other. Sounds simple but I feel like in the beginning, we put way too much pressure on ourselves to do every single thing right and make sure we take care of every single issue with ourselves and our birds. Sounds corny but it really is a journey and developing a loving bond between you and the bird is what's key to really enjoying parrots. Try not to get overwhelmed and just focus on the positives with your bird. Hope that makes sense and I am wishing you the best of luck with you and your future companion 💜

I try not to jerk but he bites hard and breaks skin at time. He literally chases ur hands to bite them on and of the cage, Ive tried towel method but by the time I catch him does he even know why im toweling him. Also he gets pissed and doesn't wanna get near me. Ive tried positive reinforcement and even negative reainforcement with the spray bottle. Right on Victoria! As always, you put things in perfect perspective. If we can save one Budgie (or any parrot for that matter) from a life of misery and incarceration, then job well done:). Personally I love Budgies (Australian or English!). I have a client in his early 80s who had somewhat of a fatalistic attitude about death. All of that changed when he found a baby Budgie in the park while walking his dog! He acquired another Budgie so they could have each other (Budgies do better with a mate). Three years later (adorable and inseparable, the birds are the light of his life. They're fully flighted with an open cage lifestyle, in a large bird proofed room (flying and exercise is very important). The interaction is precious as my client dotes on the dynamic duo in the sweetest of ways! The Budgies have literally given my him a reason for living! I'm in the wings if he needs anything, but he's doin' just fine on his own!. Thanks again for the great advice and keen insight. The "Birb Squad" is lucky to have you! Happy Holidays to you and your family. Kisses from my flock to yours! Glenn

These are the perfect parrots for me.. beautiful.. smart.. entertaining.. quirky and love their whole flocks. A macaw would be a prisoner in my home.. no room to fly and too much wood to demolish. Sometimes you need to fully evaluate what life we can offer our bird.. not just what we want from them. Because of us they will never be free.. so can we really offer them a quality life.. I truly hope the answer is yes before we shop xxx

Did your Quaker begin talking? 2nd video I’ve seen this morning & have a 10 month old Quaker rescue & a CAG, & am looking into the possibility of them bonding as the Quaker, Coty now Drako, had a sibling that drowned 4 weeks ago & we took her/him in. Living free on a boat is an awesome life, however, birds can’t swim & babies or under 1 year olds, think they can do anything. I also have a 10 month old granddaughter & we’re training the other grandsons, 4 & 5, that we care for our little Birb the same way we care for baby sister, Chloe. Whatever toys Toto can have, the baby Birb can also have, and the same with foods. The bird is absolutely a charmer & has from day 1 taken food from each child & so tenderly. Drako will grab a big chip, but to eat blueberries, (fresh picked daily), grape, you must hold it in the same spot as she/he takes 8 to 10 bites off it, always leaving the outside skin & nothing else. Dude, our CAG, is a huge talker & a good boy, but the kids are too wild, all but baby Chloe, whom he watches or “babysits” each afternoon during her nap time. He stands guard over her sleeper until she wakes up, and then chats the next hour with her. Will the two ever be friends as Dude is very jealous & any smells or remnants of the Quaker & he immediately gets attitude & lunging. He’s never displayed this type of behavior to me, ever. He’s a 14 year old rescue I took in 1 year ago in May, “ a birthday gift from the son & his in laws, after I turned the bird down for nearly a year. “SURPRIZE”

They clipped his wings really badly and he seems to be traumatized by their forceful handling, he is scared of everything, specially hands...only now I managed to get him to perch on my finger to eat. He chirps to me, calls me and tries to interact but at the same time is so scared, it breaks my heart 😢. I've accepted he probably won't be cuddly or loveable and will probably get a hand raised budgie to be his buddy soon- I just want him to be happy.

Oh dang Tanya you've got a full house lol. Have you tried recall training? Also I've noticed what really helped me is blocking off a room that's smaller and less distractions to work with them. Also I don't let my birds get free reign to fly wherever in the home. They seem to think they can do whatever they want this way if they had the whole house. It's a lot of little things in your day to day routine to change that's made the biggest impact on mine.

@@VictoriaRyann i have confined all my birds to 1 room with me and my husband and spend an hour with each of them individual and then put the bird back and try with another in hopes the other will learn from the sight of what the others do

I did this. All the advice on the net pointed towards get something small, get something "easy" a "hardy bird" that if it dies you shouldn't own a bird. So I got Tweek my budgie as my first bird. I love her, she really shouldn't have been my first bird though. She wasn't what I really wanted. I wanted a Quaker, they are illegal in my state. I tried to apply for a permit for one and got denied, so I went an researched again, I settled into a sun conure for my life style and was dead set. Videos and already owners painted a portrait of screaming monster birds, so it was a budgie. She was not what I wanted. I have 4 birds now. Budgie, lovebird, Indian Ring Neck, one of my dream birds a red Lory. Now I'm searching and trying to find my perfect bird for me. Its not possible is my conclusion. I have to move to a state where I can have that Quaker I really wanted in the first place. So yes don't let anyone tell you " get a starter bird, a budgie" if you want that huge macaw as your first bird, do it!!!! Just make sure you research, heck go a local rescue and handle them so you can know for sure that's what you want. I see a lot if people who have never handle a bird before go into the macaw room and come out with an agreement to adopt. So don't let anyone especially the net defer you from your bird you want. Don't get me wrong each one of my birds I love them deeply, they are in my care for a reason, my own reasons, I wanted them, I thought they would make for an amazing flock, they do BTW, they each hold a piece of my personality. These are my reasons for my birds. They are well taken care of, loved, handled ect. However I do admitly say get the bird you want, not the budgie the net will sell you, or more experienced bird owners say about. Yes Victoria, no more budgie for first time bird owners.

Wow Mandy your situation is exactly what I wanted to explain in this video. This kind of thing happens to so many of us and you are so right in the sense of get the bird you want! Of course like you said make sure to do the appropriate amount of research and I really like the idea of going to a rescue center to handle or help out with some of the different types of birds there. I hope you're able to get your dream birds and no doubt in my mind you are an amazing loving bird mom. Thank you for sharing your experiences I know sometimes it's scary to put yourself out there like that. So I really appreciate this thank you. I bet your comment is really gonna help people. Hope you have a great week 🤗

Hi! my family and i are considering getting a budgie, but i've been researching and it seems that birds, specially that small, have really sensitive respiratory systems so it is normally recommenden to don't clean close to the bird. My question is, what can i do? do i remove it from the room i'm cleaning? or what do i do? BTW, we live in an apartment of 120 meters or 393 ft with three bedrooms.

I've had a budgie parakeet and he still hasn't warmed up to me, I've had him since May and I don't know why. Every day I spend time with him and try to get him to get me to warm up to me but he still just runs away, is there anything I should do to help me bond with him or is it normal?

There are plenty of ways to get your budgie to like you! A good idea would be to look up "how to tame a budgie." And to research their behavior plenty. Buddies are funny little creatures, and there's a lot that might catch you by surprise. Best of luck with your lil guys.

Awe thank you Jamie I appreciate that. Kind of funny cause he's not the biggest fan of baths especially compared to Yoshi. Haha isn't it awesome seeing the look on people's faces when they don't expect a bird to be on your shoulder 😂 I love the name Pennie for a bird super cute!!!

Yes I'm starting to realise I have made this mistake, I was so scared of getting my first bird that I went with a Budgie, got him a friend 3 weeks later and I've just put a deposit down on a 12 week old pineapple conure. I wish I had just gone straight for the conure however I do love my little guys and they are very tame and fun and have lots of time outside the cage. They have a home for life with me but I really hope they can mix with the conure (not same cage obviously) but I know this may not be possible. I am stopping at the conure though so I'm really praying for a happy little flock of the 3 of them but time will tell. I cannot for the life of me get them to eat anything but seeds though 😩
