If the decision for the part 2 to be cancelled was in a meeting 1 week before hand, why wasn't the driver told so they could use another vehicle
@Tailspin80
@Tailspin80 2 ай бұрын
The page Ashley shows at 4:55 tells you to call the DVSA to check your vehicle is acceptable. As an experiment I entered the reg no of a London black cab (from. KZbin video) into the check MOT facility and sure enough it said “no details held by DVLA”. If he’d called them they would have rejected his car because they can’t ascertain MOT status.

@@Tailspin80 It may tell people to call DVSA to check on acceptability of the vehicle, but if a decision to change a rule takes place in a closed meeting it would be courteous to at least let individuals who will be affected know.

@@revealingreflections9338 I’m not sure that’s the whole story. If he had called DVSA as advised they would have told him NO for the reasons I explained before. If he had done this well in advance he could have used a different car or got a regular MOT.

@@Tailspin80 That may be true, but these days courtesy is a rare offer. If the booking was made online why wasn't the need to check with DVSA flagged as important, and why does DVSA not have access to an indication of an MOT status for taxis when that requires a higher standard? In Australia such details are always available to the licensing authority. What I read into this suggests the system in the UK needs some urgent application of common sense, which is also a rare commodity these days

Funny in a way, cause I was a 'trained' driver in the army. I can bust a road block, I can evade being followed. A whole lot of things to be honest with you. So learning to drive like a civilian? Never trained for that! So yep! you have taught me a great deal. thinking on it, it's also a life education too. When I was working at a garage in Cambridge we used to do Taxi MOTs, they consisted of a regular MOT, generating a regular MOT certificate that could be viewed online with the DVSA etc. Then there was a series of extra checks mandated by Cambridgeshire County council. Things like body damage over a certain size would cause you to fail the Taxi element even if you pass the MOT, tyre tread depth requirements were also higher for the taxi test than the MOT test. There were also things like no smoking signs, first aid kits and fire extinguishers that had to be present for the taxi test. The Taxi test then generated a second certificate that the drivers had to take to the council to get their licence renewed for another year. So for them to say it didn't have a DVSA approved MOT (Or whatever they said) just doesn't ring true to me, feels more like they were overbooked and wanted to quickly cancel one or two so they could all go home early for the weekend.

Dad used to run a taxi firm in Cheshire and used to run into all sorts of issues because the cars showed no valid MOT's. I dont know why, the council don't register the car as MOT'd with the DVLA every time it has its taxi mot (called pass off where im from). would solve so many issues.

Many trainees out there having to start again from scratch due to delays no fault of their own. The theory pass duration needs extension until they sort this mess out.

As a taxi driver (private hire) within Worcestershire, where we then have 5 districts governed (Worcester, Wychavon, Wyre Forest, Redditch… and Wolverhampton? Yes). Each has separate rules for a lot of things but also MOTs, and presents a massive problem for vehicle size/rules/quality which leads to cross bordering where the standard is lower, and they can work legally, although, in some cases it might be against their actual insurance policy but hey ho… but most of that is besides the point as I’m commenting in regards your MOT policy rant. Trucks (and buses?) have MOTs which are the most restrictive, and they still upload to the database as a valid MOT. Taxis and private hire vehicles are among the highest mileage vehicles on the road, and yet subject to only a yearly MOT in many areas (we have 1 MOT and Worcester requires a “check” at their approved garages after 6 months of that MOT renewal). The DVSA/DVLA should be classifying these vehicles as commercial and requiring 6 monthly MOT tests on every vehicle registered as a taxi/PHV and it should be noted on the DLVA database too that is what the vehicle was used for. But that being said, the council authority that does those Taxi MOTs should be authorised to upload to the database. Then this wouldn’t happen. An MOT is an MOT, as long as it’s valid it should be accepted. Perhaps get the PHV driver to complain about this to the authority/licensing as well, so this never happens again?

I think another really important point that needs more awareness is how to drive AROUND mini-roundabouts. I can stand at a bus stop and watch driver after driver after driver turn right straight over the middle marking, even on nice big wide mini roundabouts with loads of space to go around properly (drivers actually are WORSE on these, sometimes straight up just driving in the opposite lane). I've mentioned it to drivers and every single driver I've talked to has said "I think technically you're allowed to go over the middle" or something like that. This is not true. Highway code 188 says you MUST go around the central markings unless your vehicle is too big to do so. Mini-roundabouts are not pointless, either. Some drivers say going around them is pointless, it's just a waste of time, or even more stupidly they'll say it's more dangerous. No. They are genius. If you go AROUND the roundabout all cars are going in the same direction, meaning any collision MUST be a glancing collision. Energy will be deflected away from the cars. If you go over the middle, however, you can have a head on collision meaning all the energy of the collision is transferred directly into the cars and the people driving them. I have never seen a driver turning right at a mini roundabout actually GO AROUND it, and I keep my eye out for it, and have been looking out for it for years now and still haven't seen a single driver do it. This needs serious awareness risen. Mini roundabouts need cameras and drivers who go over should be penalised as they are straight up breaking the law. Fines and points at the very least. This causes crashes DAILY, some of them causing injuries and deaths.

The instructor is protecting their pass rate to reduce the likelihood of a standards check. To be fair they can do this, and if the learner is not ready then it is a sensible justification to decline use of their car if the learner insists on going ahead. I'd need black belt barristers help with this but, as I understand it, the website does state the vehicle has to have a valid MOT, now whilst Exception Certificates or "Taxi MOTs" are accepted for road use due to the stringent testing, if something specifically requires a valid MOT and it states this on the website I believe that their refusal would be valid as yes the car is road legal but it has an exemption not an MOT. Now if the exemption specifically states on it that this exemption can be used in place of a valid MOT certification then they'd have no leg to stand on
@johng.1703
@johng.1703 Ай бұрын
hmm by reading the DVSA website, as long as the private hire taxi is operated as a taxi it is exempt from requiring an MOT, so the point about it not having a valid MOT is irrelevant as it is exempt. as long as the vehicle is licensed as a private hire, it will have an exemption certificate as long as the issuing council is a Designated council. "MOT testing may also be carried out by designated councils (DCs). Their legal position, and that of the inspectors who carry out tests on their behalf, is similar to that of authorised examiners (AEs) and testers. For all practical purposes, DCs and their inspectors are treated as if they were AEs and testers respectively." form V112 a private hire vehicle would be exempt under category G of exempt vehicles, as long as the issuing council is authorised to check the road worthiness of the vehicle. I wonder how tractor drivers get a license, you know as they don't require an MOT either. or how about a classic car?

As a happy cabbie, this popes up for me. I assume the part 2 is a type of driving test? But reading the comments a guy in Liverpool may have answered the question. But every day is a school day, the Taxi/PH inspection certificate issued by an authority is only for when the car is being used as a taxi/ph vehicle, this sounds like a cabbie is wanting to use his car for another purpose and not for work. Then the Liverpool guy who say they need the taxi inspection and an MOT is correct as if you check the taxi/PH insurance it won’t be covered for personal use unless it has an MOT. So the DVSA who run the MOT know. So the guy may have had a lucky escape as if he was stopped by plod and he did not have a fare on board his insurance would be void, then points and fine etc! So why his authority he is licences too did not make it clear I would check with them first to see. I appreciate your rant but it does say cars more than 3 years old need an MOT and insurance for the test ( they even advise to check with the insurance company) But I still can’t work out why when he had the taxi inspection he did not get an MOT at the same time? As most reputable council partner garages give it as well then you have never got an issue.

That's pretty common for prices to go up before black Friday, it's all a trick to convince consumers to spend money. Most people don't track the prices over time, so they just see the % off and assume it's a bargain.

Is this a test centre rule or a DVSA rule? At the bottom of the gov webpage you were viewing, there is a section titled "Check if your car can be used before booking a test" - I wonder what DVSA say when you ask them?

What I would like to know is if police cars and taxis are tested to a higher standard than regular vehicles, why aren't they given an MOT record against them anyway? It would alleviate any concerns around potential clocking when it comes to the car being transferred to normal, non-commercial use. It would also stop issues like this from arising.

A collab with the police or emergency services about their driving or to get a police officer to do a mock test with you and see if you’d pass them as an examiner would be a cool episode and a bit of a laugh

Oh... That would be interesting... Get a police officer qualified for high speed driving to sit a mock learner level driving test with Ashley.... But then arrange for Ashley to do the training and test for the high speed police driving. Yes, that would be difficult to arrange since it would require real police resources to do. But I'm sure there would be a police force somewhere in the UK that would love the publicity, and potential recruitment advertising it would create. Might need to be done as a TV special though, with real TV crew and such.

Nurburg ring? Is this for the Rad am Ring cycling festival?! 😉
@AlanIanRoss

You ask if there would be something we'd like to see you do in the next 12 months. My answer (from Italy): ok for the Nurburgring (I suppose, as a «How to drive like a driving instructor» series video). But, why don't you come to Italy and have a drive, say, on the Tangenziale Ovest (Milano), or the Grande Raccordo Anulare (Roma)? Again, as a «How to drive like a driving instructor» video, with that mindset, and see what happens... 🤔 As usual, my warmest congratulations for your videos and the channel. Despite the fact that I've been driving since 1982, and I have a driving licence since 1985, I've learnt so much from studying and applying your "driving philosophy", that often, when I'm behind the wheel of a car, I have the impression that «Ashley is on the passenger's seat, and he's nodding...» 😂😂

Hi Ashley, you asked on the post today for content that we might find of interest for 2025, i passed my test years ago in ten lessons, 1978, i took to driving like a duck to water, but i didn't feel in myself that i was ready, so i took it upon myself to do the IAM course, personally i think this may have been a confidence issue, anyway i did the course and passed, and i felt so much more confident with it under my belt, do you feel it might be a good idea to revisited some of your pupils after a while, to see what bad habits they may have picked up, not as a slagging video but someone in the same position as i found myself years ago, that wants to improve their driving skills, and another thing I've been thinking of, i think some drivers i met on either IAM or even Rospa courses, think they're a grade above, but i just think they're just a bit arrogant after passing, not all, just a few, could you maybe test or even show there're driving skills, or even match against a driving instructor course, the course i took years ago with the IAM gave me the chance to do my dream job, i became a chauffeur and have been since i was 21, safe driving, i love the channel into my 4th years now, keep the good work up, james

If the car is required to have a valid MOT, presumably that excludes MOT-exempt cars - i.e. those more than 40 years old. Which seems a bit weird. After all, it is clearly stated that the MOT does not provide any sort of guarantee that the car is roadworthy, that's still on the owner at all times.

Why do I feel like The DVSA has refused the taxi because the computer says no. There should be no right to refuse a roadworthy vehicle from a test, just because they don't have a box for private hire vehicles or different testing.

KZbin has generated other language audio tracks for this video within an hour of its upload, and "helpfully" decided upon the wrong language for a lot of people. You can go to the video settings (hex cog icon) and pick the original audio from the list in the audio track language setting. It would be interesting to know whether the people affected were using VPNs or had non-English language defaults in Google or something. It could be just some random fault in KZbin, of course. Alas, the French translation, for one, does not speak French with a Liverpudlian accent. (-:

It's seemingly random. A Canadian quad bike mechanic I've been watching had the same thing happen the other day. His video only had something like German and Spanish when it first showed up - the original audio track wasn't there at all. Sometimes I feel like KZbin doesn't test stuff before they throw it live.

Disgusting treatment by the test centre. If they had a meeting and said the Taxi wasn't suitable for the test. Surely if they had the meeting more than a week before and made the decision to have immediate effect, surely they could have let the candidate know and have a week or so to find, use, and get comfortable with a vehicle that they would accept for test purposes. They should get a free retest and granted as many weeks or months it takes to get the retest completed as a grace period added to the two years qualification period.

I don't understand their issue here. Are the Taxi MOT's not issued by the DVLA? Also, I'm curious what legislation they use to justify this closed door decision and why they wouldn't have put out a memo to all involved parties.

Black Friday is a scam IMO. I work at Amazon and they do the same. Increase prices, and then put a fake crossed out price to make you think it's a good deal when the item can b found cheaper either elsewhere, or outside Black Friday. They use it as an excuse to get rid of all the Amazon tech that people use once and then stuff in the "junk drawer" 😆

Some jobsworth put that rule in place. (The DVSA thing.) I believe there's a shortage of driving instructors at the minute? Things like this, which are clearly totally unnecessary, aren't gonna help. I've toyed on and off with the idea of switching careers to be a driving instructor; I even spoke to a course provider one time in the past when I was between jobs and the person who spoke to me thought I would be good at it. I'm so pleased Ashley that you're telling it how it is. It's not that I would be affected by that ruling; I've never driven for hire which has its own set of rules and is something I wouldn't want to be involved with, but if they are going to make decisions like that, I think I can find something less stressful to do instead.
