The car is more sentimental (and faster) when you work on it. I also feel the relationship is better when you invest in it and practice good communication all the time. That's an easy way to get disillusioned with reality after awhile of 0% success rate after wasting years with various people, but the partner you "get for free" and don't do anything for is like the free car you get that you never do any work on. You might be somewhat happy it got you from point a to point b, but it'll never be perfect for you. Don't underestimate the power of communication. It's like watering the grass or turning wrenches. If you watered the grass and every time bees came after you? Or you try to touch your car and it electrocutes you every time? That's like being in a toxic relationship where you try to communicate and get shamed or attacked for it. Just don't even fuck with it at that point, don't waste your time just get something new where that doesn't happen, because it actively prevents any sort of forward progress.

I see as the following for men and women....if someone slept with 20+ people between 18-22 then saw the error of their ways took a year out, worked on the issues they have at that point and then started looking for a meaningful relationship landed one and that lasted 5 years before ending and 6-12 month later I meet and start dating them the promiscuity phase means less than if I meet them and realise they went on a full blown 304 phase from 18-28 with a body count of "OVER 9000!" a high body count is an indicator of fatherless behaviour but context does matter.
