The minute you said "you've got to learn pattern drafting to become a designer" I sought out a book and worked through it. It's tough sometimes to go through this on your own, so an online class would have helped me a lot. Skirts were first. Worst parts were, indeed, trousers (I think I made more mockups than I can remember for the crotch seam, found out traditional tailors left a 3 inch (!!) seam allowance for fittings and never sewed the darts for the first fitting), bodice and sleeve variations. Then off to different dart stuff, ruffles, buttons, pockets, etc. Then jackets. Coats were not included (which left me at a loss the first moment), but I could manage to construct and sew that one on my own. My book lacked the so easy kimono sleeves, underwear, hoods or caps and some in-depth knowledge about stretchy fabrics and corsetry. No word about draping. It was also crazily full of abbreviations that you had no reference table for. But I can construct most of the basic shapes I need now. So I think I'm skipping this class, I think. For any beginner: This order - skirts first - is the best, and it's really helpful to have someone you can ask if problems occur. Recommend!

My issue is with people not actually showing the darts process from start to finish. Where exactly are they getting their measures from? They just say from my chest to blah blah... like I'm a multi module learner I can't just learn like that. Also, with them not saying what settings their machines are for what type of fabric. I know each machine is different but I think it can give us an idea 💡 of where the settings should be or even start from somewhere. I'm a complete new sewer but these are the things that I at least have issues with. I need to hear, watch and do to learn 😭 I don't want to pay $20 for a patreon that assumes I know what I'm doing. I will join yours and hopefully I find the instructor that I've been longing for in this journey

You are so brilliant. Exactly.!! starting with the skirt would help people who are now learning and are new. The bodice is so complex and could turn off newbies.

Intrigued by your class. I learned pattern making in the 1990's, then went to do something else... In Lasalle College, we were taught to work on the skirt first, from which we learned all the basic pattern manipulations, like darts, pleats, pockets, flares, gathers, etc. Only after we have ould learn to work the bodice. You are right, the skirt is the easiest place to start. I am getting ready to pick up sewing and pattern making again, and may possibly sign up for your class, if it's still available.

Hi Zoe, I've been watching your videos for years and I love them! It has improved my fashion sketching. However, I've always been intimidated by actually learning how to sew and make patterns. Over the years I've attempted, and the bodice is just so intimidating, and I'm an awkward shape/size so it's been really frustrating. So after not touching my machine for about 6 years, I'm just now seeing this video, and I can't wait to take this course! I appreciate you providing a simpler approach where we can increase the difficulty as we go, as well as giving us building blocks for full customization instead of one specific piece. I just want to say thank you! I fell off of sewing, but I'm ready to try again and I believe this will be the class to get me over that hump! I appreciate you! 😄💜

You have inspired me to go back to my younger self.. when my mother 57 years ago sneaked a Vogue magazine from our little drug store into our house on Sunday .. in my island home I leaned her thoughts on fabric. She put newspaper on the floor and made her own patterns as she is the best dressed… in a poor community. Many thanks, Moya Greene

Zoe Hong. I do happen to believe and agree with what you've said here about how patternmaking for fashion courses tend to start. I like your idea of the skirt pattern making and designing process becoming more of a modular concept. This is much more like it. If you go in 2 most fast fashion retail stores. You have a bewildering amount of choice of Styles and concepts. I would like a pattern making course tailored around what you find in modern fashion. Your pattern making course I think comes pretty close to that. We have to make pattern making relevant to 2023. Have you thought about using modern technology to make it easier as well? Like taking a picture of a garment you already own and then copying in Adobe Illustrator for example? I think you should also do a module on your pattern making course on how to copy clone your existing clothing accurately and properly. Not this quick fix over edited stuff you get here on KZbin. I think that a course that shows every part of the process in intricate detail would be a very good step forward. Zoe. I really do think you've hit on something here and I wish you very good luck on running this course. Pure.

Your dress form should be the size of whoever's going to wear your clothes most. That could be you, of the size of your fit model for your brand, which should be the middle of your size range. What’s the difference between this pattern making and the industrial patterns, I mean the ready made garments! ❤
@zoehongteaches

There's commercial patterns, which are the ones you buy at the fabric store to make clothes at home. Industry patterns are the ones made for fashion brands that focus on construction efficiency and generalized fit.

@@zoehongteaches thanks for the clarification! Now, is there any way to get hold of the industrial patterns? Is there a site where they might sell? I want to be able to make clothes to sell but need a couple sizes of those patterns, just the basics!
