Zoe Hong hi. I absolutely love your videos. They are so professional. ❤️ But I have a question for this series... What do I use a hip curve for and what do I use a french curve for? Both seem very similar to me when it comes to what they are used for but why are there these two rulers then? Thank you! P.s. I already love this series...

French curves are similar to hip curves, they are a slightly curvier curve, if that makes sense. I like to use hip curves for side seams, long sloping curves and I like to use French curves for tighter curves like armholes, some types of necklines.

Also for holding leather together before stitching (especially heavier coat or purse weight) you can use the 3/4” mini spring clamps with vinyl tips from Home Depot etc. The vinyl tips prevent marring and obviate the need for tissue in most cases. I also like Pilot’s Frixion erasable ink markers. Works far better than Dritz or similar from the sewing world. Heat erases the ink. You do need to test for the marks to reappear in some fabrics if item gets very cold. Not usually a problem in most fabrics or most real world applications. Lastly to add to you list I would recommend a 36” flexible curve ruler which is great for contouring around crotch curves. Great video! Thanks for all your efforts, so appreciated. Sandy

thanks for the video! I'm glad that you started this series. idk if you'll tackle the topic of transferring the pattern on the fabric in detail in the next episodes, but the method I learned uses transfer paper (the one with an opaque wax layer, which comes in many colours) and a rotary tool with teeth. also, a trick I was taught is that if you're sewing denim or any thick fabric (maybe not leather, because it would mark it permanently), just hammer the thicker seams down before sewing, so that they'll get flatter and prevent your machine needle from breaking.

Awls are also good for eyelets and grommets too! You can make holes in your fabric without any fraying by pushing right between the fibers.

Please more !! im an architect intern, I always wanted to be a designer, i always draw sketches..unfortunately, there is no fashion designer career on my city, so I had to go architect, which I enjoyed only the design part. I asked for a scissor sharpener for Christmas, it did have a learning curve, but it is just lovely to be able to sharpen as needed. I will use any sharp scissor, but sharp steel just has a nice feel. I have Mundial, Fisckars, Wiss, Remington (belonged to my grandma), Gingher, and a couple with no name. Each has its own feel and I kind of grab one for certain fabrics, another for others. Dull scissors just tire your hands and forearms, and I have some tendinitis so keeping them sharp is really nice. The brand I got is Scissor Pro, under $100, and they have an instruction video on KZbin.

Lol at the end. Once again this video was super helpful. I’ve already bought a couple of the books Zoe mentioned in the How to Become a Fashion Designer video. Now I just need a machine and some patterns of course. This was also the first video that made me feel like I could potentially become a good sewer. I’ve tried the medium in the past and was terrible at it; super slow and not the best looking garments. The original sewing class I took was at a community college in the fashion department. I think it was just too advanced for me. Knowing about the basic tools needed has given me a new outlook, though. Watching this video I am eager to start over more simply. Hopefully that will allow me to produce better looking garments.

11:25 I suggest holding the notcher upside down. So you can see the mark on your pattern through the punching slot.

KAI has a huge variety of scissors. We had a guest lecturer who studdied in Paris and he swears by these scissors but he owned the most expensive ones by the same brand.

I agree. I have three different KAI pairs, for different purposes. I’ve used the other scissors she discussed and feel that the KAI ones are the best of the bunch. Other professionals have told me the same. From what I’ve read, the Gingher shears used to be more durable, but quality has fallen along with the prices.

FYI: You can also use sheets of fine grit sandpaper to sharpen some tools. Just cut the sandpaper with the tool a few times and it will sharpen it.
