I'm embarrassingly old skool. I still have an amp with a 1x12" and a mic in front of it. As for a board, it's a BD2, SL-Drive, Durham Sex Drive, Trelicopter and a mini delay pedal. They all fit on a Nano+ so it's no great stress. I've been gigging it constantly for years and every time I swap something out, it ends up getting swapped back in.

Board for most of the year has been HXFX with a tonex in the loop. Tonex takes care of amp+cab and compression/noise gate/reverb (because I wanted to keep as much DSP free as possible for HXFX). Only recent addition was a pinstripe line isolator so I could have a consistent DI/LI for our in ear rig rather than having to rely on house DIs and having to mess around with the gain staging during soundcheck
@charlesstratton53359 ай бұрын
That sounds like the best rig available right now!

I got an HX Stomp because of you John. I only play in church these days so the amp sims are very important to me. So I use a Boss Octave (I like octave at the beginning, JHS Univibe, JHS screamer for solo boost, JHS Morning Glory for an always on sound, Wampler Tumnus as my rock overdrive a Boss FZ-1w, which I can put after all my pedals since Boss use a buffer - as a solo sound. I use the HX Stomp for amp sim, mods like chorus and trem, reverb, delay and EQ at the very end for a volume boost for solos. I haven’t changed my pedals around since I’ve had the HX Stomp other than switching overdrive once in a rare while just for different flavors.

Super interesting! I've found your channel a few weeks ago and i've been loving all your contents. I don't usually watch guitar lessons videos on youtube but yours I really liked. Congrats on getting close to 100K subscribers! My drive section hasn't changed for about a year now. I go guitar -> some boost -> TS -> Rat, where I keep RAT always on with very low gain. With a strat and clean fender amp, RAT reacts suprisingly well to volume/tone knobs on my guitar and hand dynamics. Then I just boost with either TS or some other boost depending on taste. I'm digging your tones and way of playing, so this video was interesting to watch. Thank you for letting in on your gears!

My basic gig board this year has been a small Pedaltrain Nano+ (powered by a Cloks with a HX Stomp as the main central hub with UAFX Starlight and Mercury 7 in the FX loop (sometimes with a small volume pedal for ambient swells). This goes straight to FOH and relying on monitors or in-ear. This has remained constant since building it at the start of the year. Its super light weight and it could of course go into an amp, but this hasn’t been required as the bands I’ve been playing in have been needing quiet stages amp wise., plus of them is an 8piece group, so stage space is tight.

Keelely Comp, TC SubnUp, Fender Marine Layer Reverb, TC Mojo Mojo, ODR 1 mini, Wampler Tumnus, TC Spark boost mini x 2 one always on one for boost. Boss PS2 Pitch Shifter/delay. Just use it for delay. TC Flashback, Line 6 M5, Fender Tre-Verb and Pinwheel, Neunaber Immerse and then the Stomp which I use for recording not live. Powered by 3 Thomann modular power supplies. Which are excellent.

Always good to see what’s on peoples boards. I need to revamp mine now I’ve bought the HX Stomp. My tuner could come off, but not sure yet. My delay is already off. Then I need to look at drive pedals. I have a BD-2 Bluesdriver which has been on for many years, a BB comp which I use as a boost/compressor and a Vertex SSS SRV which sits last and is always on. I’m going to take off a Blackstar dual drive valve thingy. Never been happy with that and my Boss Octave pedal because I never use it these days unless I’m messing with a looper. Finally there is a Hotone mini wah/expression. I’d like to use this with the stomp. I’d like a smaller setup so maybe the BD-2 could come off. It’s always fun messing around but definitely feel downsizing is the way forward.

I used to have the workstation, but I sing and play and i found the switches too close together and was always pressing two at a time by mistake. Now I have A Unit 67 compressor/boost, Duke of tone MXR, Plexitone deluxe, Andy Timmons Halo delay, Vemuram Shanks OD ( got it half price, this is the best pedal I have) and the strymon flint going into my Victory V30 or UA Dream 65. Oh and a mini wah, which is awesome, I have it on the Vox setting.

Kinda similar board size and concept: from deep trip BOG (for lead) to the King on Tone to the hotone ampero stomp 2. That has the amps and irs and sometimes an extra delay. In the loop is the wampler aethereal for reverb delay. And then to my fender fr12. Sound awesome

Just a note to let you know how much I enjoy your videos. Also, a comment on wireless microphones: wireless microphone produce a great amount of emf. In academic research it has been proven that emf can cause cancer on living cells and tissue. Having that microphone/transmitter next to your ear/skull openings irradiates that part if your brain cells and other tissue with emf. I also don't consider a good practice to have this on the neck where it irradiates you thyroids and other nodes and tissue. In general I don't think this microphone design a safe one, the company needs to re-think this design. Of course it never happens until the first claim wins on a legal court. Please be safe, get another mic. So many shotgun, dynamic or large capsule work just fine for your application. Please don't take my word on this topic, do an academic paper research. Again, thanks for your videos!

I use an Eastman’s T486 as my main guitar (playing in a covers band - indie rock and a few others). I love the Eastman which I could because a Gibson 336 was just a bit more than I could manage at the time. I love my Eastman and I use my Gibson SG and Les Paul as backup but I really like the little bit extra resonance from a semi solid. I did buy a Sire H7 last year - beautiful and great sound but the narrow neck was just too much so I sent it back. I just bought another that they’ve widened the neck - looks great but not tested it yet (Christmas present from my wife) but I hope it will be a decent backup for the Eastman.

If you consider the cost, size, weight, the cables and the power management, I wonder if it wouldn't be easier to gig your full Helix instead of this board. Aren't those external pedals easy replicated in the Helix? I imagine if you use some pedal models, or even some amp pre models as pedals, you could easily get in the same tone ballpark. Maybe I'm wrong? I'd love to hear your opinion on this, John!
@JordanAllenClark9 ай бұрын
This is exactly what I did. Had a helix. Sold it and did the pedals and stomp for years, then did a stomp and he’d and realized it would just be easier to go full helix. I will say the stomp and he’d with routing was a bit easier to manage dsp but had multiple cables and power supplies that I didn’t want to worry about anymore.
@lattjeful9 ай бұрын
Some people prefer having their physical pedals. I think John said once that boosting and using physical pedals with the Helix can make it feel more amp-like, which might also be why he uses them. Also something to be said about being able to tweak your stuff for the room without menu diving, or being able to use all of those pedals in front of a backline amp. As far as size, the board looks smaller than a normal Helix? Not sure.
@DaviSiqueiraSilva9 ай бұрын
@@lattjeful Smaller? Not so much when you put the expression pedal on the side, I think.

I pretty much have same concepts regarding multiple gain stages and efx, so I have the jhs at+ (why didn't you go for this?) then xotic ac plus for softer distortions. I use the iridium for amp - less rig and keeley pedals for rev and delay. yeah and a mini ibanez chorus and mini wampler comp.

So John, no filters ..? Pure gain stages and a bit of compressor cushioning and that’s it ? How many stomp presets do you actually use here, and what’s the story for delay and tap tempo? Purely manual input ?

I’m building a pedalboard myself, as I’m going from church worship sessions to live bars. Considering an HX Stomp OR Boss IR2 + HX One. Do you think it’s a waste to use the HX Stomp as an amp sim clean, then use pedals for drive sounds? Like John Mayer’s setup? It’s more money for the HX Stomp VS IR2 + HX One. Any thoughts?
