I am a preschool teacher who currently has 13 five year olds addicted to your show because we decided during bug month at the school they wanted to learn about ants. (Ive been a 2 year AC family member and MAY have swayed the vote to say ants) Twice a week we watch a new AC video to learn how ants live and learn about the different kinds of ants. We as a class just wanted to thank you for such informative videos. My farm of Black Garden Ants love the classroom. They're going on a year now and have become our class mascot. We are the Ant room! Thank you for all that you do and insipring my class to be little creature lovers :)

Oh, I forgot to mention that this species of trap-jaws eats springtails in the wild.
@44BlueFoxes6 жыл бұрын
I agree. And if you're eating the critters that clean your garbage.... who's cleaning your garbage? I mean once one ant gets good at catching springtails, they should theoretically be able to share the 'knowledge' of how best to do it, around the entire colony but like you say, I don't think there's enough sustenance there. They might need top-ups to their food supply from an external source.

Actually, I'm more worried that eventually the number of ants will be significantly higher than the number of spring cleaners. Unlike in the wild, where the spring cleaners have an unlimited area to live, here in the ant terrarium, they're basically put on the silver plate for the ants. So to speak, I think they'll be overpowered and devoured in near future.

I do like the self-sustained concept but I doubt springtails and flies are enough to keep the colony fed.
@ghoulishtheories79796 жыл бұрын
That’s what I was thinking. They’re so small, and for a colony of 100, yeah I don’t know. I’m also not to keen on those mites being in there. The fact that he caught two older ants already getting devoured by them kind of worries me of the colony’s survival.
@cooperolm96876 жыл бұрын
Yeah, wild ants are sustained on a variety of prey of all sizes as well as carrion, some tiny springtails aren't going to cut it. This isn't natural for them, it's a slow starvation.
@cooperolm96876 жыл бұрын
The mites thing sounded like he was just irresponsible mixing things from between colonies and accidentally introduced mites, then tried to play it off like it was on purpose. I'm bummed about it, but I doubt this colony is long for this world :(
@mariorossi95806 жыл бұрын
I would have added isopods, roaches and other insects some weeks BEFORE the introduction of the colony, so that some other kinds of prey could florish during that period of time. I don't even know if the diet of these ants is springtales-based in nature. This is a big mistake for me.
@jazionpurnsky11856 жыл бұрын
If there is a limit on the food supply you need things like mites to limit the number of ants to a sustainable amount. Otherwise the limit will be food and when that limit is hit they all starve. I would like to see some ant eating bugs or something. But it's a good start.

Jaw breakers will only eat small foods cause they are very careful. Watch a video on the old jawbreakers, they would only take cockroach babies or half a cockroach baby. I might be wrong though.
@migueldeclercq38836 жыл бұрын
The wild flies are the worst supplement possible. Flies are one of those insects that can ingest insecticides and their bodies store it, they don't poop it out or anything. So if you want to kill your ant colony, it's a perfect food source for sure, they're like little time bombs. I totally agree that the springtails will not do. He needs to add another kind of insect colony in there or he needs to feed them as usual.
@fumixlps6 жыл бұрын
A Very Private Life yeah cause they could’ve been sprayed with some bug spray before they reached the ants.
@mitchl52206 жыл бұрын
This is just an idea but... if you added a layer of leaf litter to the bottom plateau it would provide surface area, shelter, humidity and food for prey species within your system. Then it'd be able to easy support isopods and millipedes (which I believe are more suitable prey for trapjaw ants as their mouths look powerful like they are built to tear into chitin.) Maybe then it would even be able to support roaches. These prey species will also help break down the ants garbage. Hope this helps! OH! Also remember how your last trap jaws died? Wild ants climbed into their nest and killed them all so maybe you should still apply the ant barrier around the outside of your system to stop invaders haha.
@cristina18986 жыл бұрын

The energy the jawbreakers are expending trying to catch the springtails and failing seems to be more than the energy they get back from a few successful catches. Maybe he should add a bigger feeder "cattle" for them. Those big jaws are probably more suited for catching bigger prey anyways.

based on my experience with self sufficient ecosystems, also known as ecospheres, the trap-jaw ants will not have enough food to support their colony without supplement. There is not enough space for a sufficient amount of spring tails to thrive in this system.

LtGameboy they’ll get better at catching the springtails as time goes on and springtails reproduce super fast so their will always be s food source for them
@LtGameboy6 жыл бұрын
TeamCoolKats YT That's not really the problem The problem is more that the size of the container is too small for a sufficient amount of spring-tails to live in there, and the ants will starve, not because they can't catch the spring-tails, but because there are too few spring tails to feed the ants.
@MelkiorMonster6 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same. Its kind of like setting up lions to hunt vultures, only in minature. The springtails work at breaking things down, as the clean up crew. They get plucked up here and there yes, but I don't quite thing that's the proper niche the fill as primary feeders for predatory species. (Usually would be ignored mostly as predators will mostly recognise them as cleanup crew unless the pred is desperate.) Basically the amount of work needed to hunt the springtail may outweigh the output from the tiny meal. That's why they jump at the chance to grab those juicy flies when they fall in. I think tossing some other feeders in once in a while would highly benefit this colony, they may skirt by otherwise but never really be prolific as say the golden empire.

It takes a while to get a colony big enough to move into a setup, and termites have specific requirements. Pretty sure it'll be a while before we hear from the termites.

Everyone's mad about the clickbait title and while it's frustrating, I'm more worried about the fact that he thinks because one ant caught a spring tail that the entire colony will be able to sustain off them as their only food source. It's very clear they struggle to catch them and it requires a major effort to do so. To encourage the spring tails to appear you already have to place food (e.g. watermelon) in the terrarium - at that point you might as well just drop in a cockroach and ensure they are getting the food and nutrients they need.
@yatsunarurasuke31116 жыл бұрын
Ghost of Yharnam Same thing that I was thinking about. I don't think that it will be enough food for them. Like "good" enough. It may be a source of food but not that great of a source. I actually thought he's going to plant some seeds. lol. At least you get the idea that the "Jawbreakers" figuratively came back from the dead. It still made sense tho, no need to fuss about it.
@raximousprime7756 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing, there's a reason most experiments perform the same thing multiple times, any sort of variables could have contributed, that Springdale could have a had a injured leg or have been old or something, he should have confirmed multiple catches before calling it a day. If they can't catch springtails reliably then he needs to introduce another docile species that is maybe slightly larger so the ants can catch it easier

HOTU Orbit what did you expect? Honestly? The whole OG colony was killed. Use some sense.
@hotuorbit6 жыл бұрын
ChaseTheStars You're comment makes no sense. I wasn't expecting anything. My point was that because this is a different Trapjaw colony, it should have it's own unique name so that it doesn't piggyback off the Jawbreakers colony. If I was a Jawbreaker, I'd be angry that another colony stole our name.

I love your idea about self-feeding in your colony, but without a larger source of protein, I feel this colony may never get very big. Edit: I have seen many comments on the mites, and though they seems to kill off dying ants, they don’t seem to screw with the living ones. I hope they are not going to be a problem.

I remain entirely unconvinced that springtails alone are enough to feed a growing colony of large ants. They're gonna need more food than that. The one or two springtails they catch every hunt just isn't enough.

Best video yet! I am obssessed with predation and intellegence. Its especially interesting in insects. I loved your carnivorous plants and praying mantis episodes. Having spent some time watching cayotes and breeding hunting dogs it is amazing how intelligent they can be. The rate of adaption is mindboggiling. I put down insect predators for a long time but you have shown me I was wrong. You are the best! Thanks so much

Dragon Knight Uki sorry I’m replying late but I actually don’t know all of the insects that can do this only one, a yellow jacket, I learned that they can come back to life when I was in first grade, I got stung by one and because in school we were doing a project about bugs we kept the dead thing in a container thing, when we went to glue it to the board the next day the yellow jacket started flying while we were glueing it the board.

At 1:20 he says that he "will explain how he " (I )" managed to "obtain" this colony (in a bit... )" @ 1:40 he says that we lost our ants to "Wild Black Crazy Ants" @5:22 he says ants moving in... why move in if you are already there? @ 10 mins he explains they came from a friend. so you see they are not " Back from the dead" Or "returned from the dead" ; they are a new colony. A New Colony that deserve a new name...

Yea I don't think it's a good idea to let them feed with such a small prey. And you should have introduced the prey long before the ants came in so they would have time to settle in and actually start breeding. Also you definitely should add more prey, different kinds. These ants will soon hunt them off completely, they will need way too much of them. Of course, you can always add more springcleaners, but with the same effort you could just drop in some cocroaches and mealworms. It's the same effort but it's much easier and better for the ants, than using way too much energy to catch one bug that isn't really worth it. Most big predators wouldn't bother with a prey too small as the energy they will get from eating it isn't worth the energy they used to catch it. The mites, I see some complain that it most likely was an accident on your part and you tried to play it off that it was intentional. I don't know, it could be, but mites also could work as population control. You said they only hunt for the weak and sick and old, right? If this is true, I wouldn't worry for the healthy ants. But there are alot of other things that do make me worry.
@robertreid52976 жыл бұрын

@AntsCanada6 жыл бұрын
Mites can be good for a system. They're detritivores, but if the habitat becomes too hostile, they will transform to a phoretic life stage and stick harmlessly to the ants. We should beware of the truly parasitic mites which suck the ants' blood. I haven't seen them here.
@killlog-kb3kd6 жыл бұрын
AntsCanada I already posted something about this but I wanted to make sure you saw it. Can you get new ant colonies based off the dead/gone ones? If you do get the new colonies can you put in memorials for the original colonies? I think a lot of people would like to see them back. Thanks if you do!
