Watching with my sons tonight because they have grown to love your videos and we are starting to watch old videos. The queen was spotted at 9:15 traveling from North hallway quickly disappearing to the left into the chamber. Her thorax could be clearly seen for an instant. "The lava caves"? These are caves formed during a volcanic eruption, the most common of which (I believe) are lava tubes. They're often massive, and can run for miles underground. The homes these guys have made reminds me so much of one of these systems. Not to mention the ants themselves, streaming through it like flows of lava. Wow, one too many geology documentaries for me lately >.>

When I was young, we visited my grandfather in Northern Florida (Monticello / Tallahassee on the panhandle). I was warned about rattlesnakes and Fire Ants. My grandfather, who was a long haul truck driver for years, told me about the time he got home, stepped out of his truck, and stepped right on an Fire Ant hill. They went up his leg and there he was on the side of the road pulling off his pants as fast as he could. So, after hearing this, I did what any 9 year old would.. I looked for a Fire Ant hill! It only took 5 minutes, and very close to the house there was a patch with about 20 holes, but close together. I found a little white pail a child would bring to the beach or something, and decided to torment the ants.. I put the white pail over the conglomeration of ant holes, and before I could get my hand off it, the white pail became red with ants as I ran in the house as if I hadn't just messed with a Fire And colony.. as I was told not to after all. That pail turned red within 1 second.
