OMG! My pet ants are getting too smart! They're learning from experience! Today we take a close look at the Hacienda Del Dorado, our 75 gallon terrarium which houses the Golden Empire, our massive yellow crazy ant colony, as well as other cohabiting creatures. We discover in this epic ant video, how the ants show evidence of learning from past experience, and how they've even been creating a hidden, secret cavern within the tank. The collective colony mind of the ant is capable of some truly astounding activities! Hope you enjoy this week's ant video!

I noticed that all the ants on the roach have nearly full gasters, is it possible they were less frenzied simply because they were well fed and didn't feel they needed the additional food source that badly. Or that they may have also been more lethargic in general because an ant with a full gaster is simply more valuable to the colony than one with an empty gaster and so they were attempting to minimize the amount of risk they put themselves into because it also risks the food they're carrying.

Food drought, feed them less often like every other day or longer times between feedings should be our new event. This is so that they do not get in a routine and to make it feel as to them that they are in the wild, and who knows, they might learn to find other food resources while doing this event and may be a topic for a new video! It also might be possible to change the times of their feeding every week so they won’t know when their food is coming, but that might be a regular practice for you to do to stimulate your ant so that they fall into a routine less slowly, also try hiding the food as well, just by not putting food into a specific food pit will give them more of authentic feel of the environment of the outside, since food never comes from the same place in the wild, it would be interesting to see how long it takes them to find the food everyday depending on where you hide it! Just a couple of suggestions that I can hope you can use! Good luck!

In the exercise profession, we employ a technique called periodisation, which is where we vary training variables in a particular time frame in a particular pattern. For example, in terms of repetitions of an exercise, it can be 1,2,3,4,5 or 5,4,3,2,1 or 1,2,3,2,1 or even something random like 7,6,5,3,8,9,2 then repeat that random sequence a few times i.e. 7,6,5,3,8,9,2 7,6,5,3,8,9,2 7,6,5,3,8,9,2 Perhaps you can do that for your nests. Periodise feedings and "disasters" and well as tank cleanings. You can also artificially create wet/dry seasons, though it might be better if these were regular since seasonal changes in the wild are pretty regular too. Occasionally release live prey (i know you don't like that) or do drastic damage to the nest (while tidying up the tank) to simulate an attack by a predator.

give them more enrichment. I think maybe a live, small roach. They'll have to take them down theirselves and since the roach is small it won't hurt many ants. Though, if you think they can handle bigger, go for it.

I mean, if you put in a live cockroach inside where that roach have zero percentage of surviving, no matter how much that roach is trying it would still be dead. Sorry Mikey but they most likely died from the soil being too rich. Regular minerals found in average terrarium soil is too much for a pitcher plant, they also need a ton of water, they don't like to dry out which the ants probably need a small amount of. Next you should try bromeliads, they are very hardy and colorful! Heck, just save the top of a pineapple and plant it in there and I bet it will grow a mini pineapple plant.

The nepenthes may not have done well being in the same soil with detrivores. N. x ventrata (ventricosa x alata) is a vigorous grower that, from my experience, is not a very demanding plant once given humidity and light. All my nepenthes are under red blue LEDs right now mixed in with some platycerium ferns and utricularia. They all grow in varied long fiber sphagnum mixes. The concern with decomposers is that they break down soil too fast for CPs. Nepenthes need fairly well aerated soil with minimal nutrient content to remain healthy. While nepenthes are more tolerant of minerals than dionaea and sarracenia, their roots still will burn with too many nutrients. The soil may just be too rich. I would suggest hooking them to the back wall of the terrarium in net pots filled with long fiber sphagnum and maybe some orchid bark and top watering when they start losing moisture. A note on nepenthes, these are tropical vines that can get very large. A great plant that is a little smaller and more bushy is N. ventricosa. It is known for having shorter, wider lower pitchers and does not tend to “scramble” as much as some of the other species and hybrids do. Also, congratulations on your channel and 1 million views! I stumbled upon it today while doing some research on myrmecophytes (ant plants) and have been watching for hours. Ant plants are plants that benefit and host colonies of ants. A lot of ant plants are epiphytic. Some include dischidia pectinoides, hydnophytum, myrmecodia, lecanopteris (ant ferns), and the famous fanged lowland giant, nepenthes bicalcarata (this nepenthes is known to be exceptionally large and develops two fangs that practically drip with nectar; due to its size and extreme lowland temperature requirements, it would not be a good terrarium candidate). The mentioned dischidia species is supposed to be very easy to keep and seeds easily. Your plants and animals look great!

3 words. Expand. Their. Territory. EXPAND THEIR TERRITORY Vastly different microecosystems connected via the acrylic tubing! Imagaine just what s difference 3 tanks could make for example; A barren desert with cacti, succulents, and other desert plants and maybe a small lizard to control the population, Another tank that perhaps is marshy with marssland and water/marsh plants, logs, feeder goldfish or frogs, anything swamp like. And finally just another forest like terrarium with entirely different plants than the Eldorado, and very unique features, maybe a faux broken antique vase, miniature statue, an old crate and some old stuff lol, etc. Just imagine the different scenerios that could go down. And watch the terrariums change over time. They could be just be smaller obviously, connected via tubing. I love to watch all the ecosystem grow as much as the ants. These were just examples, the gist is I'd love to watch the ants and other more interesting ecosystems evolve with your channel (: AntsCanads for life!!!

I think another reason the carnivorous plants died is lack of humidity. I use to grow all sorts of carnivorous plants and they need a ridiculous amount of humidity. I would have to completely wrap them in plastic and have the humidity high enough where the inside of the container was constantly wet with water droplets all on the plastic. With lots of trial and error I was finally able to make them flower. I don’t know how high of humidity ants need but from the looks of the inside of the tank it wasn’t humid enough

Don't know about the mantis, but is that a spider web at 12:39 just to the right of being centered between the tall greens in the back and that 1 up front with lighter green leaves leaning off to the right? There's a small area of white-ish blur in the air just to the left of that leaning to the right lighter green growth up front.

Maybe see how "deep" they can go, by filling stacks of thin panels stacked to the main Habitat with a pipe with holes in the side stuck in the Habitat. This will also see how they transition from wild to artificial environments. Perhaps this way you can offer the crazy ants a Habatat designed with features to better observe their sub terrain activity.

I was thinking for a feeding thing, could you get a smaller box with not much in it and put a cockroach or two noncrushed and fighting in it, then play a sound and open it up to the ants. Close it after five minutes so that how ever many ants got in are the only ones who can fight the roach. Then when the roach is dead open it up to them to carry out, or if all ants are dead and the roach is alive leave it open for five more minutes then close it again until it's dead. Also after it's carried out, close it off until next feeding time. Leave what ever ants that are in the box when closed in their for the next roach.

I always thought he shouldn't be adding 1 predator at a time, because the ants can eventually overcome them or they die out. It would be more effective to add a species of predator capable of mating while inside the terrarium so they don't die off so easy. The only problem with this is the possibility of the predator outcompeting the ants and killing them off. But they're so well established already I find that possibility unlikely. Mantises would be a good fit for this. They're good at hunting the ants, but too large to fit inside the tunnels themselves. Essentially meaning the ants have a safe-haven where they cannot be killed or loose their foothold in the terrarium. So no matter how many ants the Mantises kill, it's impossible for the ants to be wiped out.

I think you should feed them a couple of live, uncrushed and feisty roaches. Not nice for the roaches, but it will certainly shake things up a bit when the food starts fighting back again. Also, wait longer to give them some honey. Let them get a bit hungrier for the sugar, then they might get a bit more excited

Uh, l think I saw the mantis moving at 9:13. A large brown stick-like-colored thing hidden at the bottom center of the screen. The movement is large. Ya know why l assume? 1)The only living things that is large is the cockroach, which is an offering, the mantis is now hidden. 2)The mantis may be caught by the ants and is now in a search, so it may be hiding there. By the way if you pause it there and let the pause button stay, look at the downward point at the pause button.

I think it'd be really cool if you kept 3 different species of ants in one giant enclosure. You could maybe divide the colonies by creating streams of water that flow throughout the tank, and you could maybe connect each island by making small land bridges. I just wonder how long it would take until each colony discovers each other. I feel like if you put a cockroach on one of the land bridges, the rivals would meet on it and fight each other for the food.
