Hornets are amazing. I had one (I guess European) that hung out with me for a week while I was alone building my cabin. She seemed REALLY interested in whatever I was working on, hovering and darting back and forth looking at my handywork then looking me in the face. I was able to set up my camera to capture her hovering a few inches from my face for a dozen or so seconds at a time. She was genuinely inquisitive. You can really see the dinosaur ancestry in those emus! 🐱🐉

I think the reason they partially plug their entryway is to keep larger creatures out. It is a simple enough safety measure. Make it so many that only they can just fit through. Also makes the entry much easier to guard.
@Taltharius2 жыл бұрын
I always tread lightly around the local yellowjackets in my area; beneficial as they may be for the ecosystem, the ones in my area are still way too 'interested' in what I'm eating. Not to mention that their subterranean nest entrances aren't always easy to spot, before it's too late. Bald-faced hornets though... I don't mind those ones nearly as much. Unlike their smaller yellowjacket relatives, they don't scavenge dead or decaying matter (so they won't bother me at a picnic), and their hanging 'aerial nests' are much easier to spot from afar, sending a very clear 'Do NOT approach' message to anyone that sees it. Furthermore, bald-faced hornets seem especially fond of catching flies, especially the larger 'biting' flies like horse flies and deer flies. Incidentally, they seem to occasionally hide next to dead or decaying matter in order to ambush the flies or smaller yellowjackets that show up to scavenge. If I had to pick between dealing with bald-faced hornets versus dealing with biting flies, I'd pick the wasps every time.

Your videos have helped me with my fear of bees, wasps, etc. I'm highly allergic to them all, so my knee jerk reaction is always to be terrified of them. Since watching your channel, I'm more educated & understand they're not out there to get me. Most of them have important jobs & barely notice me. And I now know that if there's a lot of bee activity somewhere, a nest may be close by so I try to avoid the area. I have a lot more respect for them than ever before & I thank you.

Same I am allergic and two summers ago my son randomly threw a stick of the bike trail into the woods and within 20 seconds we were swarmed by wasps getting stung so many times it was incredibly terrifying but thinking back it was probably equally terrifying for them that there home was probably knocked down or at least hot by a random stick

I generally find wasps, bees and hornets to pretty easy going as long as one is calm and respectful. I've accidentally put my face super close to vespid nests in irrigation timer boxes, wood piles and so forth and have not been stung...knock wood. I don't feel that way about the so-called Yellow Jackets, though; I have been stung by them seemingly without provocation. Generally, the hymenopterans are a pretty awesome, and diverse insect order; I loved learning about them in my entomology classes. I always leave nests, because I know they are keeping my garden and nursery plants clean of hemipterous and other soft body pest insects.

I read about a guy in Canada that made a juice that wasps loved and every few days he would cut up coloured construction paper in it. The wasps would come and take it to build their nests. A new colour every couple of days. The nests they made were multicolored and beautiful.

We live on a small farm in Normandy France. Our neighbour keeps cattle within a few meters of our property, with them comes millions of flies. We had two Hornet nests appear in the walls of our house. One European and one Asian. They both attacked each other, but never ever us, and...they wiped-out the fly problem within a few months. Both types are great insects, and I feed them cider and calvados, which they love. Both species have never been a problem to us, or stung us. Amazing creatures, long may they exist.

I wish I lived next door to you! It would be so interesting to watch the Emus grow, the chickens eat the combs and the hornet nests develop. Even though I'm pretty petrified of the many varietions in the wasp family most likely due to an incident as a 5 year old kid when my younger brother and myself were outside in a fenced in play area where yellowjackets had built a nest where a water faucet had been removed and we lifted a piece of downspout and shoved it into the hole which, of course, the yellowjackets did not like and swarmed up and out of the pipe covering the both of us. My Mom always said our screams nearly broke the windows as they undressed us and pulled the wasps out of our clothes. Obviously, we were not allergic and in the 1950's, wasp stings were not something one would go to the hospital for. Unless one lapsed into a coma. It did however instill quite a fear of wasps and bees, but I now have no fear of bees and the utmost respect for wasps. In fact, yellowjackets have built a nest in a compost bin made out of an old fence and since it's not in a high traffic area in the yard, I just left it. I work around it, but not too close as I've had a few stings so far when I've been a little too close for comfort for them. 🙂

You reminded me a long time ago when I was younger I worked on a farm. The "pappy" was a mean old man for sure. One summer there was a huge hornet nest near his work shop. My cousin and I told him were were gonna wait until dark and burn the nest. He yelled at us saying you leave them alone they leave you alone plus they were very beneficial. We thought he was nuts. Later that summer he told us he was working in his shed and this nasty neighbor dog came was growing at him, the hornets swarmed and stung that dog so bad he went yelping back home. The old man insisted the bees considered him part of the hive and defended him. Amazing how a You Tube channel that popped up in your feed makes you think of a bizarre incident from long ago. Awesome video. I thought it was interesting the bald faced hornets wouldn’t build in the box. It makes sense since it’s not in their nature. I have seen an exception though. Last summer 2021 season I noticed some bald faced hornets going in a hole in the ground beside the shop here. The nest ended up being about 3 feet over from the entrance hole and 8 inches down. I live in Saskatchewan so most buildings have foam around the foundation to keep the frost from running down in the winter. Anyway they found the foam and chewed out a spot for their nest no paper in there only a comb about the size of a dinner plate. just thought id tell you about that probably pretty rare for bald faced hornets. Thanks for the videos I’ve thought wasps and hornets were cool since I was a kid.
