philos need high humidity and bright light to stay huge, and to prevent reversion don't give more nitrogen than needed. N brings out the green... i have learned this the hard way!

btw for your philo brazil, if you want the leaves to get larger, you need to attach it to a moss pole or something and let it grow upwards. When a plant's aerial roots have securely attached to something, it will feel safe enough to grow large, heavy leaves. Until then it will make small leaves that are less likely to break or topple.
@perhapssabrina3 жыл бұрын
The Rio is actually a different hederaceum than the silver stripe. The silver stripe will typically just have a small sliver of cream with the typically green majority. It can differ and randomly put out a bit more variegation. The cream splash is a much more variegated version with more lime green and cream than the silver stripe. The Rio is patented by Gabriella’s Plants and although people use it interchangeably, they are much different in person. The Rio is way more cool toned and the variegation is super interesting. They also don’t elongate as weirdly as the others. If you visit Texas, I won’t hesitate to share some cuttings with you!

okay so first your philo collection is such goals 😍 silver stripe & cream splash are very similar. you can only get a rio from gabriella plants. Its a certain varigation only their green house cultivates I guess I have a story I want to share bc I don't have any plant friends irl. I went to a plant swap & traded a 10 node cutting of my ss for a monstera leaf right at the start because I had no idea how sought after they were. then a girl offered me a full pot of micans for another ss cutting I had on hand. I was like wait a minute.... I checked etsy after I got back home and I saw a one leaf cuttings going for 20 usd! The monstera leaf ended up rotting and I've been cringing about that trade ever since 😭

The trailing philos actually need to climb to get big! So they eventually end up as jsut a runner with tiny leaves if you let it trail
@lilithfabian90214 жыл бұрын
are there any exceptions?
@bennobrown63304 жыл бұрын
@@lilithfabian9021 oh I'm not sure! But definately with the hederaceum/brasil/Rio/Micans if they climbed their leaves mature in size but if they trail they shrink untill they find somewhere to climb. It tends to be with most climbing plants. Like a monstera adansonii etc the leaves can get huge if they climb but if they trail they reduce in size with every leaf
@wildfern3 жыл бұрын
Oh dear. I am definitely going to get it to climb. It's so misleading because you buy them from the greenhouse with massive trailing leaves, then bring them home and they just put out small growth lol.
@bennobrown63303 жыл бұрын
@@wildfern I kind of cheat it and grow it up the sides of a macrame hanger for a few months and then when I want it trailing I put it down. In perfect conditions it probably doesnt lose too much size but in rainy cold england I notice such a difference between the hanging vs the climbing haha

I've expanded my Hoya collection since your video and I fell into some Micans for cheap!! I love them. I started a Philodendron wish list. We'll see how that goes 😏. I've never rooted in moss before, so you just cut it and stick it into wet moss and just keep it wet? Died it work better than just water?
@wildfern3 жыл бұрын
I keep the moss moist, when it dries out completely I water it. I don't know if I would say it's better than water, sometimes they don't do well in moss and then I put them in water and they take off. And sometimes in water they are doing nothing, so I put them in moss and they root. It really depends lol.

philodendrons are so great. i have had a micans for years and it has that issue where the new growth is to small or it produces way more vine than new leaves. i took some cuttings from it this year, they are only doing so so some leaves come in clean but tiny some come in and die, it is also very sensitive to light and will burn just off some florescent bulbs i have near by. maybe the plant has just gotten to old? i guess if i don't see much change i'll try repotting it unless this is pretty standard for philos. i have yet to have a philo brazil do well i can't see to fiure the issue out but they always hit a point and then start to lose leaves/ new growth dies off. the standard green ones do the best for me.

The Silverstripe needs a lot of light to stay brighter.. it's the same as with variegated monstera :) The leafes of them get smaller if you let them hang.
