It can be exciting and invigorating to live in a new, up-and-coming area, your new neighbourhood might well be the next Marais and your property may go up in value a lot! The big windows, high ceilings and sunshine streaming through are priceless, not to mention the peace and quiet, you will value them more and more because these things add so much to the enjoyment of your home and the quality of your life.
@amusingaidaАй бұрын
The Marais is charming in large part because of its architecture. The 19th is a mixed-bag on that front. But when you live in a place longterm, it's the residents of a place that generate more affinity I think. The 19th will never be the Marais or the 19th, but it is slowly finding itself at the center of Parisian inhabitant action as the city population spreads east...
@MarianneInmarsiliaАй бұрын
I worked in Le Marais in the eighties and nineties and it is most definitely not the same today. I loved living in the 9th near Place Blanche, then near Place Jourdain in the 19th….both great neighborhoods with small shops, marketplaces and a real neighborhood feel.
@amusingaidaАй бұрын
I live the Jourdain area (straddling the 19th and 20th) - highly rated! I couldn't find what I was looking for there, and demand has shot up for the area, but it's just a walk for me now, and I'll be there often!

What a great video and what an accomplishment to buy your own condo! It's turning out beautiful. I love the windows and bookshelves you added, it has so much character. I love Paris, it's like nothing else. My little niece wants to be an actress and we went last year to Paris so she could experience it at a young age. In California because the earth moves so much, flooring and wall surfaces are often uneven. You will do great in your new place and build wonderful memories there!
@amusingaidaАй бұрын
Thank you! I'm throwing my heart and soul into it. I think it'll look good when finished. I hope so! If your niece wants, there are summer acting workshops for kids in Paris (look at the Cours Florent for example), some in English. It can be an enriching experience! So in California you can blame tectonic upheaval for uneven walls. In Paris we blame workers from the 19th century.

Congratulations! I think the mistake that people make is that they try to move and renovate at the same time. Moving is hard; renovating is hard. Doing them both at the same time is an invitation to insanity. I think you have to move into a space and just keep it as it is for several months. Don't impose your desires. You have to ask it what it wants to be and offer to help it express itself. I know that sounds crazy, but I'm pretty experienced with this exercise.

Save your books! An easy solutionis is to make a a couple of 'single shelf height' pontoons for each side of your bed, tie them together with a piece of 18mm plywood, et voila; bookshlves and extra storage in the valley! If you don't want to make the pontoons a couple of Ikea Kallax singles will probably do the trick. I had hoped to post a foto of ours, but rien! Bon chance -😉

Love this! The Marais is way too full of itself. I mean, who needs to see another ironic moustache? I do not! Clean those coils on the back of the refrigerator--don't buy a new one! :) That red sponge-painted wall is going, yes? Yes? :)
@amusingaidaАй бұрын
I think the problem with the fridge was the compressor, not the coils. In any case, the new one arrived and it is quiet, so quiet. I love it. And no, I thought I'd keep the red wall as a splash of color in a largely white apartment. Why not?

It is, truly, a process, yes -- and I am saying that in French -- in French, 'un procès' is a trial. And that it is!

Well if the factory area is becoming gentrified, that means your apartment will become more valuable with time. Hence a great investment! But I totally get how you feel with frustration, disappointment and buyers' remorse. Luckily that will dissolve as you get more projects behind you and settle in. Bonne chance! 🎉
@amusingaidaАй бұрын
The 'factory' areas, once upon a time, were around Bastille, in the 13th and the 15th. The 19th used to have warehouses in the northern part (still a little sketchy in parts but gentrifying), a slaughterhouse, and a quarry (now where the best park in Paris is located). I'll be doing a video on my new home arrondissement -- I'll tell you all about it!
@leahjardin3095Ай бұрын
You live down the street from me. If you don't mind, what agency did you use? I'm renting now but I want to own an apartment for the same reasons you gave. I love the Marais, I'm back in the US to quickly close out my apartment in what is kind of like the Marais in San Francisco, the Castro / Mission area. I like the Canal St. Martin area but also other parts of the 10th & the 1tth look like good places to buy.
@amusingaidaАй бұрын
The 19th is down the street from you? Or the Marais is? Look, to find a place you'll have to hit everyhing: seloger, PàP and agencies in the area you want to live. There's no easy way to do it. But it sounds like financially you'll be more than prepared to get what you want in Paris. If I had more money, there are places in the 11th I really do like.... but for me, I needed a minimum 45m2, so budgetwise that narrowed my search a lot.
@leahjardin3095Ай бұрын
@@amusingaida I live between Republique and Canal St martin. Last year I looked at an apartment that had a balcony overlooking Republique and while it was nice, that would be way to noisy. I'm a couple a blocks away and it's still noisy. I know the feeling, I'm living in 32m2 and it's tiny. I also want a top floor (and balcony) but also need an ascenseur. My apartment in SF is on the top floor and carrying groceries up four flights of stairs is brutal. The only other issue is heat, I spent the summer of 2023 in the 10th for language immersion and it was hot so I'm debating the direction I want the place to face. I'm ok with buying a little a/c unit for the bedroom so I can sleep but top floor can get hot. You did a great job on the your apartment, it looks great and so does the plaster work. Congratulations!
@amusingaidaАй бұрын
Thanks. And yes - summer on the top floor might get a bit toasty!

www.seloger.com/prix-de-l-immo/vente/ile-de-france/paris.htm is a good calculator to get a base idea of what prices are like. But if you're not in Paris yet I recommend a long term rental first, to narrow down potential neighborhoods.

Well done. Top floor is the only way to go - I can't stand people on my head! Wood stove: lovely and comforting. I would recommend however, that you get it tested for the wood particle emission level. This is a very serious problem with some stoves. You do not want to be breathing in micro particles of burned timber.
@amusingaidaАй бұрын
Top floor is brilliant! Very often in Paris you feel a bit hemmed in when you hear the neighbours upstairs. On the top floor, it's just birdsong and the sound of rain...

I always thought homeownership was an Anglo-Saxon fetish. I guess our word “mortgage” comes from old French. It is nice to own a piece of land and the sense of security that comes with it.
@amusingaidaАй бұрын
You may be right that it's stronger in the Anglo-Saxon world.... partly because in France renters are well-protected, so some of the motivation of home ownership is weakened. Across all of France there is 60% home ownership, but that drops to half that in Paris. So I guess I'm in the minority....
