With a short shifter you got to work very precise on the knob to avoid over-revving. Mexico blue is an awesome choice.

Hi Will - I’m enjoying the way you’re walking us through the process of mods on your 993. With regard to the Steve Wong chip, I don’t know that the chip itself is a game changer without also doing related performance mods. If memory serves me correctly, SW says it will add about 10hp. What it does do that can be really valuable is allow you to have the DME take into account other performance mods you’re doing to the car. When you order the chip, SW will ask what mods you’ve done and configure the mappings on the chip accordingly. Porsche configured the mappings to accommodate any grade of unleaded gas a driver puts in the car. If you run only 93 octane you can ask SW to set the timing specifically for that - it will give you more power. (If you make that choice, you do need to be more careful that you’re getting gas at stations where the 93 is good.) We did hotter cams, cat delete, unkinked headers and a single mass flywheel on my 964. Those, in combination with all the other mods to the car warranted an SW custom chip (still moderately priced). SW cut the chip and modified a second time (no cost) based on dyno runs of my car with the mods installed. The chip, with the 93 octane setting, really brought everything together to function as a unified whole.

It's a more expensive option but the Porsche Classic radio has a small navigation screen, built in Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. They look really nice in the dash of an old Porsche as well.

Great breakdown on all the planned mods and your reasoning. You are going to love the Continental head unit. Phone connectivity is flawless and looks period specific. I get the 997 Turbo sale. I had a very low mileage 996 Turbo. I liked it, but my 993 was my go to drive. Never thought I would go for a modern 911 until I saw a GT3 Touring. Keep us updated and can’t wait to see the final result.

Great episode again, regarding the radio, i bought the VDO version of the Continental, exactly the same but the screen is blue instead of amber. Blue might tie in better with your seats and callipers. Also VDO is the brand of the dials. As an alternative you might consider the Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB, fully authentic look, but modern internals. That would be my choice if my current VDO would ever fail. Keep up the good work 😀

Too funny. I have a 1995 993 cab, Grand Prix White over gray/black interior. I have been looking to do about 7 of your mods, including that carpet and tartan inserts to hardbacks. One recommendation, although the Continental is a great radio and look, I went with the even more period correct Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB. It looks amazing installed. I also love Fuchs-style wheels on 993s, which I went with on mine.

Kool mods, and the selling of the turbo I can relate to, had a 997 myself and did not gel with it so sold her, my younger brother also had the same turbo as yours, he did not gel with it as well sold it, he then moved to a merc G- Wagen AMG 6.3, I went Aircooled. Nice very capable cars but we both just did not get on with them. 😁

I don’t agree you need a fire extinguisher. I have has two small car fires, was on a rally and Lotus caught fire and burnt to the ground! Love the head unit 👍

I have a SW chip for 993 95 available if you’re interested. I used it on mine for a couple of month. It improved the response and lower rpm torques but I had to get great gas quality to avoid knock. And here in California, this is kinda hard to find. I ended up mixing octane 100 and 91, not very practical as I’m using it almost as my daily driver. Very interested to see the end result of your mods!

I have a 993 also and undertaken similar upgrades to you, including recently the Continental head unit and speakers, previous owner had replaced the original with a Christmas tree flashing unit like was in your car. I'm in Australia and we had a different third brake light here to USA cars. Tach: Easier to see the redline out of my peripheral vision when it’s closer to 12 o clock. Speedo: the higher numbers 70 - 90 get hidden behind the wheel when the gauge is straight. This allows me to better see how fast I’m going at Highway speeds...and sometimes at high speeds on backroads too haha

Don’t know why you sold you 997.1 Turbo Manual but I know why I did! 1) Too much performance! Its unusably, hazardously fast. I was becoming a nuisance to myself and others. 2) PCCB...after a chip in a rotor the quote to replace the rotor and pad set instantly soured me on the ownership experience. 3) Unreliable PCM that became intermittent....this shouldn’t matter but it did and the alternatives weren’t appealing. After selling the Turbo my enjoyment of the brand has moved definitively backward in time; I own a ‘96 993 (with PSS10 which should be mandatory for these cars), a ‘94 968 Club Sport, ‘90 928S4, a ‘94 Mercedes E500 and a ‘78 911SC. For charisma the 911SC is tops. For handling prowess the 968CS is hard to fault...maybe even too good? For that muscle car feel the 928 hits the spot and still looks like a space ship. Fast, too, but a bear to maintain. For a serene combination of comfort and confident performance the E500 sets a benchmark that few cars since have surpassed. If I could keep only 2 it would be the SC and the E500.

You’re racking up too many mods on this 993, resell will be tough with buyers interested in originality. By the time you’re done you’ll have the value of a 993 4S or S wide body in it. I’d rather have one of those unique models any day over a tricked out base 993.

I hear you and I can’t deny you’re right. The objective of this project isn’t about resale value or marketability, though. It’s about making it my own. I’ll never see this money back but I’ll have a 993 that is mechanically sorted dialed in to my taste.
