I have noticed that all the PRS's that I have purchased have been on the high side, except my core Custom 24. Now I'm not talking crazy high, but I eventually ended up adjusting the action lower. My action preference is sort of all over the place lol, I guess it depends on the guitar and how it feels. Everyone is different.

They leave the action high on purpose. Better for it to be high than arriving buzzing due to low action. Rather they leave it high to avoid their so called ready to play out of the box upon arrival. Hence thats their sales pitch wanting to separate them from the rest of the brands.

Dylan you are so right about setup. It is very much getting into a super nice car like a BMW and realizing the seat needs a bit of adjusting. People reach down and adjust the seat and get it just right and then tell the world about how awesome it is. Guitar makers and sellers get the hard end of that deal.

I have no problem w Mid-high action if it sets up well. Sometimes tho, High action is hiding subpar fret dress and leveling from the factory. And when you get it where you like it, It buzzes in multiple spots👎

There is no correct setup. If you like your string action low there is a balance of adjustments that will make that setup right. If you like high action there is also a balance of adjustments for that feel as well. And for any string hight preference, the balance of adjustments is key. I like some of my guitars low and prefer some high as well. But they all play well and are tuning stable.

Great channel. Yeah over the years I've found I prefer a higher action on a strat. Don't know why either. Just seems to sound better. I play bluesy type solos, rather than shredding type solos, so don't really need it low. I find the string can sound louder with a higher action, and I can get a nice snap against the neck too, even with a plectrum. Totally agree it's all about preference. Nothing is right or wrong. Just preference

There is one, and only one dealer I get PRS guitars from. They include a setup that happens after talking to you about your preferences. It delays shipping a day or two but I get nothing but perfection from them. Right or wrong, they are pricey guitars so I get down right picky about them.

They will absolutely make sure that the first time your 13 year old strums that guitar that it doesn't buzz, even if it resembles the protype of a suspension bridge. I've never had a new guitar that didn't need a major set up. I think that we all know that. Most important thing is that the nut is cut correctly and at the proper height.

I seem to recall that Silver Skys were shipped set-up as Mr.Meyer likes them. So, unless you have similar preferences, you'll likely feel dissatisfied. Set-up preference and factory QC are not related. I just took delivery of an Ibanez Pia and spent a few days with it before I got it set-up 'right' (for me) - adjust, play, settle (& repeat). Typically, I like virtually no relief (i.e. a pretty straight neck) and string height at 12th fret as follows: Low E = 1.2-1.5mm, High E = 1.0-1.2mm (as low as it will go without audible buzz/sitar noises when amplified...). Sometimes, fret levelling is involved...

Fender's recommended specs of .010" relief and 4/64 string height on 9.5" radius' work for me on both my 9.5" and 7.25" guitars. I hate setup's where the bass side strings are higher than the treble, like the 4/64-5/64 that fender recommends for 7.25" radius guitars.

I just got a new CE24 last week and the action was really high. I'm surprised they do that - seems like it would put some buyers off when trying it out in a store. I bought mine online and immediately lowered the action quite a bit. Now the whole bridge is low for whammy use (almost decked) so I'm going to have to lower the saddles and raise the bridge a little. Other than that the quality is perfect and plays like a dream!

I saw a video from a PRS tech where they recommended placing a credit card between the back of the bridge to block any bridge movement during setup. I got my action, intonation, and tuning dead on, then removed the card. Of course the tuning changes. So all I had to do was adjust the trem springs to pitch and all was about as near perfect as you would want. This was a great tip and it saved me time with great results.

its definitely not a QC issue if its inside the manufacturer’s specs ~~ the player just wants a different spec. so the player oughta change it. did this blow up cos in your livestream you mentioned it was ‘a little higher than i like’ and internet dickheads blew up about it? my prs SE ‘semi hollow’ and reverend 290 both came with great setups that i love and always maintain, although that might change im thinking o f putting flatwounds on the PRS.

I have to be careful now because other people are starting to have me setup their guitars because I've been mentioning how I like doing it but here goes... My setup preferences: String height: I use a dunlop Petrucci jazz pick that is 1.5mm thick so I use it to measure my action-- once it barely scrapes between the high E string and the 12th fret I know it's in the ballpark of where I like it (1.5m or like .060 in). On my Ibanez shredder it gets dropped to about 1.3 depending if I feel like fighting a little buzz. Neck Bow: umm.. ideally none? But I'm learning that every neck sets a little differently so I play be ear here and very small turns for a PRS/double acting truss. I am not afraid to leave my truss rod cover off and adjust that thing each string change if it doesn't set right. Bridge: Look for pictures on the internet of how the bridge on my guitar is supposed to look (or specs if I can find them), set to that, and then use saddles to adjust. On Ibanez, its all posts to adjust however, and no shims. Saddles are the last touch for height for me, and I want to pay particular attention to how they level with the radius because I need to be able to shred up and down those arpeggios lol. But serious.

I’ve always thought of set ups as operator level maintenance. Like most guitar shops do exactly what Dylan did and then charge $100. There are so many videos showing you how so why not learn. And if I spend a bunch of money on something I don’t want to give it away and let some stranger play my guitar for a few days.

As others have said, setups are personal. PRS guitars tend to come with high action, because that's the way they like it. Adjusting it is definitely not rocket science, and I have had to do it with every guitar I've ever bought - new or used. No big deal, really.

HUZZAH to your semi-rant! Recently purchased a used SE that apparently made it through QC with a slightly high fret. Thus, I got a bargain but, upon arrival it was set up like a dobro almost. The culprit has been identified but i’m putting off the visit to the magic markers and the file till I need new strings. Still REALLY playable if one doesn’t dig in too hard. Hope you left a pointer to the little digital height critter. Baby needs!! Thanks as always Dylan!

I’ve always had a feeling that a lot of people claiming they tried a load of guitars at a store and whatever guitar was ‘The One’ or a cheaper brand/model is better than the pricier options are just buying a guitar that’s setup and dismissing ones that require one. Especially as no one mentions having to get it setup afterwards or making any adjustments themselves when making those claims. Basically they most likely bought the guitar that store wants to get rid of. 😂 When I was younger, I preferred heavier string gauges and wasn’t confident setting up a guitar by myself, so always took them to be setup because most guitars come with 9’s or 10’s from the factory, so even a decent setup wasn’t of any use to me and even trying guitars in stores was a little weird, I had to imagine what it’d be like with how I liked to setup a guitar. I’m a lot more confident with setting up a guitar these days. Never had to send a guitar back so far either. I don’t like a particular setup, I kind of spend time with a guitar and see what works for however I intent to use it and that might change over time as well. Only thing is I’m not so into heavier gauges any more.

Great video and point of view. Totally agree that setup is not a quality issue. Generally speaking, QC issues are not correctable with a good setup. Examples of QC issues include poorly seated frets, misaligned neck and bridge, defective components, mis-wired controls, etc. These are issues that must be repaired and not fixable in a basic setup. Clearly defects. Setup is very personal. A factory setup should allow the instrument to be playable out of the box, but not personalized to a specific preference. The best words are generic and serviceable. I usually let an instrument acclimate to my environment for a week before doing a setup. I prefer the nut slots to be a slightly high out of the box. I like to tweak the slot depths and width to the gauge of strings I plan to use, especially for bass. If I plan to use extremely light strings, then that might even require cutting a whole new nut. Next is neck relief and action. Most of my instruments play better with slight relief and few play best with no relief. I generally play bass with very low action except for slap and metal where I like a little higher action. For Guitar I like action that is 2 to 2.5 mm, but on a couple I have 1.5mm. My preference varies by style, scale length, string action and a couple other factors. The last couple things are setting up intonation and adjusting pickup height. Sometimes on bolt on necks, I may adjust the neck angle,m but that is not usually needed. Fit and finish fall somewhere in between not a QC issue and a real QC issue. I expect less expensive guitars to have a minor finish flaw or two in the polyurethane, nothing major or noticeable a couple feet away but visible up close. Also pickguards on a sub $200 guitar usually will have some fuzzy edges and fuzz routes. These issues don't affect playability and are cosmetic but happen in the budget range. But if these same issues appear on a $5000 guitar, I would say that is a QC issue. Don't expect a $100 Glarry to have the same fit and finish as a $15,000 PRS Private Stock, be realistic. As for fret sprout, all I will say is that I don't see how some people think that having a guitar neck with a cheese grater on the side of the fretboard is acceptable.

@@Shiznitt_dude I bought a 3 grand abasi larada and it wasn't setup to the spec they have in their video tutorials on there FAQ for setups, very easy to get it set to spec but most electric guitars get a factory setup not always catered to what the guitar should be set to unless you're dealing with Japanese custom shop stuff and even then its debatable. Per Nilsson does not keep his strandbergs at factory spec, he changes string height and gauges from what you get, I know this because I direct messaged both him when it came to my strandberg, and I messaged Abasi and asked if I should change the height of the strings, they told me to go ahead and adjust the guitar to spec. It took me 2 very high end expensive guitars to realize setup is not a QC issue, it's something every guitar player should learn to better fine tune their instruments to their playing style.

I like 1mm on the bass side, .5mm on the treble side at the 12th fret as a start. Neck as straight as possible. I shave the nut down to tap the 1st fret while fretting the 3rd. If everything checks out I go lower. If any notes are dead I'll spot-level. I'll go higher if I have to but anything above 1.5mm is unacceptable to me and will need a full leveling. But it's rare nowadays to have any guitars except extreme cheapos to have dead notes with action greater than 1.5mm.

Don't usually comment much. Setups are like assholes everybody has one and they're different. Yes I agree with you guitars don't always come set up to your liking. They have a range that they go for and that's typically what they do. I would say half the guitars I bought were fine the way they were. But if I want them perfect for me I set them up myself I like my truss rod pretty much like you I don't like it flat but I like maybe a 1/32 of an inch of relief. Just about flat. I like my action at about 3/16 of an inch on the low E with 52s. The high I like 1/8 of an inch or 2/16! The only time it was ever totally unacceptable? I ordered a guitar from Malaysia It took it probably 10 days to get here. It wasn't Epiphone Jeff Waters signature V. That guitar came in such bad shape that I took it to a reputable luthier and had them do a full setup and told them what I wanted. That thing was horrible The action was like a half inch strings weren't anywhere close to in tune It had a big bow in the neck and the bridge intonation was off I don't think it was close but there's no way they did anything! The guitar was totally brand new literally probably direct from the factory to them. The trade-off is that you could not get that guitar anywhere else new and I only paid a little more than what they were going for used but that was bad! From Epiphone????😟 But yeah I am a pointy guitar guy. I have one traditional shaped guitar and 13 others which are V's, Explorer and Razorback shapes. Nice video today Keep up the good work Dylan I'm starting to watch your channel more and more 🤘♥️

1/32 of neck relief is actually a lot. I'm guessing you meant something different because you said you like the neck nearly dead straight. The most commonly quoted amount of relief is 0.010" (10 thousandths). It's actually quite a generous amount of relief and converted to a fraction it's 1/100. Which is way less than 1/32. This means that if you really like your relief at 1/32, then you like a lot of relief. That's far from dead straight, and way more than the most used amount (.010). But again, I think you may have meant something else, considering you said you like a nearly flat neck.

@@BostonWhoFan515 You totally hit the nail on the head. Yes a I like it nearly flat I usually just eyeball it as I have been a carpenter for my whole life pretty much. I don't use a straight edge or the string. I just site down it and get it to where it's almost flat Just a smidge or What us Carpenters call a squeech. Which is probably like three human hairs side by side. And yes I like my action pretty close I don't mind if there's a teeny bit of buzz on the high frets in a few spots. But I believe I was pretty accurate on the action setting. But you are right 1/32 of an inch is Way too much now that I think about it maybe a 300th of an inch???? Like I said I eyeball it! We say eyeball drywall 🤣

When i purchased my Orion Green Silver Sky I had it set up and love the guitar. But! why, why, put plastic tuners keys on this very expensive guitar 2500 is what i paid back in 2020. I bought it because well i thought this is it. This is a great guitar. Then they came out with the SE version which also was a great guitar for way, way less. That just made me feel like a horses ass. You can feel the difference between a squire and a real fender stratocaster. Not with the Silver Sky not enough 1800 dollars worth. For this reason I feel PRS sucks The Core version of the Silver Sky should have key features that set it apart from the generic version. I mean the Fender Aerodyne i just bought i cant put it down. It's bone stock and was only 599.00 I play the Silver Sky core model and i feel ripped off. Plastic tuner keys. WTF. and you cant change them Because this is what John Mayer wanted?
