I also live in Chicago and husband and I spend ~$500-$600 a month on drinks, coffee, and eating out. It’s a hobby/experiential thing for us too. Glad to hear we aren’t alone in that expense.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. I am also taking a long hard look at how, when and where I spend my money. You've given me some great ideas and encouragement. Thanks for sharing.

I crochet and I definitely recommend just searching on KZbin for patterns. I also use the patterns on the actual yarn ball, but those are a little harder to understand if you've never read a pattern. There's youtube tutorials out there on how to read patterns that are really helpful. Side note as a Canadian I can't imagine paying for health care. I'm so sorry, it must suck and be expensive.

As a casual fiber artist, I wouldn't recommend such a large first project!!! If you are doing one piece of yarn the entire time, there is a good chance you will get bored and put the project down for a really long time!!! Nothing wrong w dnf ing a project, but idk if that be a good first introduction!! If you have two or more yarn colors, then id recommend knitting small squares of varying sizes and stitching them together later !! You'll get the hang of knit and pearling, be able to decide which swatches you like the most, make something entirely unique and your own, and feel that satisfaction that is so important for new hobbies :3!!

I believe someone else already mentioned it but if getting into knitting making an account with ravelry and searching patterns there with their filters for knitting and blankets will absolutely give you an easy to navigate pattern searches (free and purchasable). I also super highly recommend some of the older tutorial videos from expression fiber arts on KZbin because some of her videos really helped me understand some things that would confuse me in patterns for both knitting and crochet. She had the clearest and least obscured video demonstration and verbal descriptions that were easy to follow when I was 0:02 starting out & I think those videos are still on her channel. You also have a few really nice looking yarn shops in the Chicago area that I was sad I couldn’t work into my schedule when I was last visiting.

this is very helpful for getting thinking about my own spending. (earlier today I explained micro cleans to my sister and it reminded me to come check for new video)

Have you looked into farm CSAs for veggies in the summer? I think it could save you money and its supporting local. CSA stands for community shared agriculture. You pay a farm up front in the spring and receive a bunch of goodies every week for an allotted amount of time. Usually between 9 and 18 weeks.
