Greetings All ! In this video I make a quilt inspired by a traditional style of Japanese art called Ukiyo-e; one of the most recognizable example of this art is Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Dave your inspiration to others comes from the joy and achievement you find as you quilt. This sharing of your fearless placement of fabrics that you enjoy, reminds me to be true to what I enjoy when sewing. Quilting is an art.....and you are joyful to watch as you express your art. Just a thank you.

This is absolutely stunning! Whoever ends up with this will have a treasure. It’s as if Hokusai lived and worked in Gee’s Bend.

Ukyio-e translates as the Floating World and means the world of art, music, theatre.

Did not know how small The Great Wave is - and I have a degree in art history! Dave, you've inspired me to get out of the pattern box so I made an improv Woodstock-themed quilt. I had so much fun making it with a great playlist. Your Ukiyo-e quilt is another masterpiece!

30 yrs ago or so there was a Boat show/ regatta in San Juan’s Bay, where I live and a boat from Japan participated. It had Ukiyoes for sale and I bought one. The prints are all original pieces, and mine illustrates peasants getting across a bridge carrying baskets. It is also small and a beautiful work of art, just as your dream quilt. I love it. Thanks for sharing all these experiences and your work. I think it’s wonderful. ❤

I am a fan!!! I have only started watching you and I am sure I am not the only one who is left with an uplifted heart after each of your completed quilt. If you are willing and still have this quilt, I would love to buy it from you. This beautiful creation will live in a nurse educator home in the midwest where it will be loved and handed down to my only child. Thank you for being such a positive influence to your generation.

This is a stunning quilt, I love it. I think it's the background strip units that make each picture pop. It really works with the colours you chose, anything else may not have ended up as stunning as this. I believe this is my favourite quilt of yours so far and I have loved them all!

I agree with you on the fusible batting. Occasionally I’ll use it for a table runner, but not anything larger because it doesn’t stay fused. Another great project Dave. It looks great.

Hi Dave, I'm going to recommend another Dave - David Bull who is a Wood Block Print Maker in Japan - I love watching his videos and he did a whole series on carving a reproduction of the Wave - you'd have to search for it - he doesn't post regularly but he's worth watching. Really great Dream Quilt! x Kate

I didn't know the Great Wave was a wood block print nor did I realize it was as small as it is. Thanks for that wonderful info. That wave is so aesthetically appealing to me - I really love it. I also liked your music that had your "tongue pops" in it!! This is a fabulous quilt. Thank you so much once again for sharing your creative process.

Wow! A fitting tribute to stunning artwork! I love how you say you design in your sleep. I've done problem solving while sleeping for eons. It served me well in my professional life and even now in retirement as I play with my own quilt designs. Nice to know I'm not the only person that doesn't shut their mind off even in sleep. LOL

I really wasn’t expecting that the solids would make such a fitting frame for the individual prints, but I should have known to trust you! You asked - I did not know that the wave original is as small as that. I guess it’s like the Mona Lisa in that way. Another thing learned, thank you.

Dave you joke and laugh that it won’t be perfect or you don’t even know who you will give it to but that’s what makes your work so cool. It’s quirky, funky, inspiring, uniquely beautiful and not perfect….. you might be REALLY surprised what someone would pay for your work. The new generation of quilters and buyers aren’t looking for perfection they are looking for THIS.

WOW! Hey I consider you my friend Dave, can I have that quilt? 😉Srsly tho, amazing quilt and that is obviously inadequate praise but it’s the best my stunned brain can do right now. I love & buy panels but have difficulty using them. Right now there’s a bright one with succulents I’d like to try with this method. Thanks so much for inspiring us mere mortals in youtubeland. I love The Great Wave & Hokusai’s art too, kinda like learning the Mona Lisa is tiny, I also thought, maybe because of the title, that The Great Wave was large!
