The local ranges I use don't allow more than 6 rounds loaded at a time. They have 25, 50 and 100 yard backers. You aren't allowed to go beyond the bench area with a loaded weapon, nor can you shoot at anything other than paper targets stapled to the backers. More than once I've had guys laugh at me for standing, kneeling, or going prone next to the bench. Rapid fire is also prohibited. It is what it is! Those rules don't apply if I can get to the farm.
@Hillykarma7 ай бұрын
You know, at a range where the general public is attending, I can understand some restrictions, but at a point it gets downright insulting.
@rbm61847 ай бұрын
@jamesvatter5729 Range rules on my range is similar but not limited on number of rounds or rapid fire. It does have steel targets also. I also stand, kneel, sit, and prone on the 100 yard rifle range behind the bench. 25yd. pistol and 40yd. shotgun are pretty much the same rules and no drawing from holsters. All guns are to remain on or behind the bench unloaded except when firing. The only exceptions are if you have a membership not on public range days and no range officer or other shooters is present. Then with no range officer or shooters present you can move to the side of the bench in the open and draw from holster or to the side or in front of the bench with rifle on the rifle range and same for on the shotgun range. But I no longer have a membership to do that. There is a time cut off with no shooting before dawn or after sunset and some times may be limited on certain days. There is also a 25yd. indoor pistol range at a gun shop but I hate indoor ranges that have even more rules and are even more restrictive and limited.

There are some ranges out there that only allow you to shoot from a seated bench position into a very small port. The thinking is that the seated position is the safest position for people to not shoot themselves because there is almost no way to point a long gun at yourself while seated.

I like this format and the content. The USMC dry fire silhouette targets painted on the 50 gallon drums are itty bitty. Carlos Hathcock notoriously practiced dry fire and holding firing positions for hours. You can get surplus small silhouette targets for close range practice. I recommend “cheating” with the sling. Also, recommend “cheating” with an elbow rest like an IFAK pouch mounted on the front of your plate carrier, to help with good bone structure posture. I put Shoe black / Edge dressing for Core Fram military dress shoes on the front sight post. I qual’d with irons. 🎶Meet me down by the railroad track, track. 🎶

I've been doing that drill at 100yds with my rifles using a B-29 target with an 8" sticker on it. The targets at that distance are probably analogous to a standard silhouette at 200yds. Doing that has been one of the best things for my own rifle technique.

😂my local range won’t let us stand when using any rifle 5.56 and over. To ensure this happens they place you in a separate bay that has the top portion of vision restricted. I laughed the first time I went to shoot my AR but really I was crying inside.

Hey Reid what distance do u have that rifle zeroed at?
@JohnnyReb20007 ай бұрын
I remember him recommending 100 yards in a video years ago and in his American Rifleman book. I've also seen a lot of folks recommend a 50 yard zero for a 5.56 chambered rifle, with the rationale that the point of impact will coincide with point of aim again somewhere between 200-250 yards or so, depending on the ammo, barrel length, etc. Either way, to my understanding, point of impact within practical distances for 5.56 shouldn't differ from point of aim by more than a few inches. Overall, my understanding is that 100 yard zero is a better universal zero for a variety of calibers. My AR-15 is zeroed at 50 yards, but my AR-10 is zeroed at 100 yards. I have considered re-zeroing my AR-15 at 100 yards to keep it more consistent across my rifles.

Is YOUR range open to non students? Ever? The only “range” i can go to with any freedom to practice draw drills is O’dells and that’s a crapshoot because of other people there basically shooting long range taking up all the space. I have friends with private ranges but never can get time to sync our schedules to shoot. This has really hurt my fundamentals. 😮
