My RC Helicopter HD camera mount (GoPro)

www.ARKRC.com.au - This is how I went about mounting my GoPro HD camera to my Align T-rex 700E helicopter. This is my first time talking in my youtube videos so please forgive my noobness.

I always though mounting a video camera was a good idea, but the technology wasn't there for the enthusiast back in the mid 90's. I just recieved my 700E DRC. I really like the way you have mounted the Gopro on the front of your heli. So I made a mount based on the the same idea on a milling machine and bolted it to the front of my Raptor 50 nitro. Thanks for the tip on camera res and fps helping to eliminate the jello effect too. If it all works tidy, then I'll have a go at the photo shop idea which is also smart. I'll do a video soon and see how it all goes. Oh I ! have you ever used the wi.fi. whilst flying because I've heard a few stories about the Wifi effecting the signal from the transmitter to the receiver. Cheers mate :) .

GENIUS PURE GENIUS. I never thought of using photoshop to get the cuts right on something like that. Flying was awesome as well. And like you said you dont get that gel in the camera view. That is some excellent footage.

@supersirlal Thanks, I heard that shoot at 60 fps eliminates all/some of the jelly effect but I haven't tested the theory myself yet

I think this is the best DIY heli mount I seen....... Now I get the bent aluminum part....what I don't get is what you are sliding it into....maybe you could do a video on just that.....but yes this was very cool....very cool indeed.

Great video and tutorial. I have the GoPro as well. Just posted a video using it mounted under the KDE frame ona Trex 500 but I have a new Trex 600E PRO FBL I want to eventually mount for video. Great option and no vibrations. Did you consider a rubber mount spacer between the adhesive pad and the aluminium? Most ofthe mounts I had seen were in that style. I will study yours and attempt a similar setup on the 600.... wish me luck!

Hey, nice video and also really cool technique for cutting out the view finder inside the canopy. I wanted to point out that the handheld camera videoing the helicopter as it hovers shows more vibration than the mounted gopro on the heli. Lots of kudus.

tried this years ago with a gopro but found too much interference from the electrics on the heli, iam in no way criticising your work but i went out and bought a DJI phantom 4 pro to make short film clips and its the only way to go, the gimble and 4k camera is amazing . film quality and the software make it easy to produce the clips , add music and change all the dynamics you need. its seriously a no brainer, but well done on your work . looks great

@piper4seeformerly :D - these types of helicopters have a variable pitch blade - allowing positive and negative 12 degrees pitch. So when it is upside I change it to have negative pitch and give thrust downwards. Cool eh!

@hpibajajumper I connected the 2S lipo to a Western Robotics Hercules step down voltage regulator. The dual output of which plugs directly in to two available ports on the Mikado V-bar :)

@vmhorne I reviewed your video again. For sure, the 700 KDE tray has a tighter fit than the split skid layout of the Trex 600E. I'm gonna try a thicker piece of aluminum to see if I can't fill the entire rail area and adjust it from there. Wish me luck! Work in progress!

May I suggest a feature : mount a servo on the shutter button and wire it to the trainer switch so you can have a remote shutter for taking pictures. :D

I would like to have a big helicopter like that but i'm afraid of how much it would cost to fix if I crashed. How much money would it cost to fix if it needed main rotor blades, tail rotor blades and maybe some other small parts on the rotor assembly? Just a guess please

@cruddbucket Well! Time for an update. I studied your design and checked out my new Trex 600E PRO FBL... similar battery tray but different mounting option since the batteries get in the way of a lower mounted camera. So I adapted your design to work with the new Trex 600E PRO. Had to buy some new tools for precision cuts but I got the aluminum trimmed to spec. Even mounted a slide guide. Fits secure with zero play. As soon as I determine a proper bungee placement I will post a video! THANKS!

You should definitely consider using this for creating videos, it would create a nice cinematic effect. Just replace the audio and add some image stabilization in editing to make it very smooth.

@vmhorne GRRR! LOL! Chasing some lateral vibration... up and down is great but it is shaking side to side.. gonna double check blade tracking and modify the mount to make is shorter and closer to the frame to reduce the distance and hopefully eliminate the vibrations. Back to the drawing board!

I imagine if you try to sync the hz on the shutter to the rotor mast, you can all but negate the vibration... that said, I dont have one, so GL. ;D

@BlankBrandon I've just got a T623, really solid, stable and rugged, can take a few nocks to say the least. I've mounted a HD cam on it and it still flys really solid, just got to make a better mount, I'll upload vids when I sort it :-)

Hi Nico - I recorded this at 720P 60 frames per second. The higher the frame rate, the less "jelly" the video appears... that's what I found from experience anyway. Regards. Luke

@cruddbucket Got vibration issues.. ran a raw test. Quality was okay but had a really fine vibration issue. Padded the skids where they contact the battery tray frame and ran 720P @60fps and 1080P @30fps.... for some reason, the 720p video started but made two more files from the time I lifed off but didn't record them. NO WHERE on the SD card?!!!! LOL. Of course, the 1080P video had jello. But was a smoother vibration... looking to thin out the skid width and then pad the inner contact points.

@tmartin32224 Thanks Tom, I am using Sony Vegas 9.0 Pro for editing the video. The KDE tray I used is the only one available for the 700E helicopter (not the nitro version). Align have also recently released a similar plastic version which would also work. Cheers

Hi mate, no I don't recommend helicopter for this application. Research multirotor aircraft, considerably more stable and easier to control, also feature GPS/Altitude hold. Please see my recent videos for more information :)
