It's the closeness of their voices that gets me and that Robin comes in to support Barry when the going gets that bit higher and louder. This was before Barry started putting air in his chest voice to get greater range.

I have to agree with the person who commented on the phenomenon that happened when Barry and Robin sang in unison. Their voices blended so perfectly that it was almost like the two individuals merged into a third, completely different entity. And Maurice's piano -- just one more example of the perfect musician. And never a lesson to be had!

Barry was known to just write songs in real time - the words just came from somewhere inside - so the lyrics are sometimes more personal than commercial. From what I’ve pieced together from a variety of sources, interviews, etc... His near-death experience as a toddler has never left him, even though he can’t remember it, the experience changed him. He was never the average kid. He knew from 8 years old what his destiny was, and didn’t feel it had been achieved in the 60’s/early 70’s, so it was especially hard to be out in what he referred to as the Pop Wilderness, with his whole family looking to him for everything. How easy it would have been to give up, but it was not really an option because they had no real education to fall back on. Music was all they knew and all they wanted to do. Many of their/his songs - ALIVE, SONGBIRD, STAYIN ALIVE, ALONE, LIVE OR DIE, IMMORTALITY, HOME TRUTH SONG (from his 2016 solo album)- carry a theme that seems to come from deep inside, and harken back to the child who almost died, and the child who knew his destiny. Theirs is a fascinating story, and their music is like a diary written in code. Please consider reacting to BEE GEES 1960, and also BARRY GIBB HOME TRUTH SONG.

Thank you so much for doing this reaction. It is one I requested also. I have watched this Carson clip many many times. There is also a version of the Carson clip with studio sound dubbed in. This song hits me in the heart. First, I just love Barry's beautiful voice. This particular song was written by Barry and Mo. I think the writing happened during the breakup, but it was not recorded until "To Whom It May Concern." This was during the start of one of their "valleys" and left them questioning if they had run their course. The name of the album reflects that they wondered if anyone was listening. And yet, this and other amazing songs like "Run to Me" were on it. They remastered and put "Alive" out on Tales of the Brothers Gibb, so I have a decent recording of it. The lyrics are spectacularly sad for me, like they are just putting one foot in front of each other, and nothing they do is working. However, the bridge is more hopeful to me. "That I'm alive and that's all. That I can get up just as fast as I fall." Interestingly, Barry says he doesn't remember writing the song. I hope he meant doesn't remember the actual writing session, because these lyrics don't just make themselves up. Geoff Bridgford left in 1972, I think before this performance in November, so I'm not sure about the drummer on the show. On a lighter note, how about Alan's fashion choice?? Thanks Chad.

Chad, we're half way through our marathon weekend and this was just a perfect song to start our Sunday morning off with. Yes, in my opinion, your interpretation about the lyrics is spot on. This was the beginning of their slump between their phenomenal 60's success and their explosion into the disco world later in the 70's. Even the title of the album "To Whom It May Concern" was a tell-tale sign that they knew that things had to change because the ballads that had launched them so successfully in the 60's (my favorites by the way) were no longer what the listeners wanted. They wondered if people were even listening to them at this point. Well, we all know that they were always able to reinvent themselves when it was necessary and the rest, they say, is beautiful Bee Gees history! Happy Father's Day, Chad!

The drummer is Geoff Bridgford I believe. It looks like him and the style is very similar to "My World". I think you are bang on! The lyrics represent the slump in popularity they had in the early 70's when they had to work in clubs in the UK just to pay their taxes. Public taste is a fickle thing. Not the first time, nor the last. They had ups and downs from early on in Australia to the end! Like Rodney Dangerfield, they "couldn't get no respect". They were such a hard luck band at times but just kept persisting because music was all they knew or ever wanted. Other bands would have given up (plus they were family). Thank god they didn't. "There's a reason for believing that I've never been alive". They had success and then seemed to evaporate. They wondered if they made a mark or would even be remembered and were treading water no matter how hard they tried. "I know I should be going somewhere, I just can't arrive". They were often on Carson and he really liked them as a group and as individuals. I agree with someone else here.....ROBIN'S HAIR! Gimme, gimme, gimme. @5:00 he ALMOST broke into one of his famous dances, LOL!

Happy Father's day and have a great time to spend with your daughter. Being a parent gives you the feelings in this song daily. You find yourself trying to measure up to other parents almost daily. I went thru this always as a single mother of 4 daughters. My 1st daughter was born on the 1st Father's day in 1972. Richard Nixon was responsible for making a holiday by declaring it in 1972. So much for history . This is something Robin was so much into especially early European history ergo the reference to kings and queens and others in high society. Europe has those monarchies where there is the division in classes and the constant struggle of the lower classes to add up. Also these lyrics are part of a song that Robin sang. The guys often had words separately and put them together for one song. The lyrics I'm not lost but I'm not searching ", are lyrics in a much different song that Robin sings in another song. I picked up on a memorial video to Robin in which he sings Days of Wine and Roses.

Happy Father’s Day Chad! All the best to you today! How great to wake up to this gorgeous and intriguing song. For me this is one of those that I forget how much I appreciate it until I hear it. The meaning of the lyrics are beyond me too. You’ve got a little less time to go I can’t change the wind and make it blow the other way There’s a reason for believing that I’ve never been alive It seems the lyricists (credited to Maurice and Barry) are contemplating mortality. I’m sure the topic was on Robin’s mind also having survived the horrific train crash. To Whom it May Concern came out at a lower point in their careers. Barry and Robin both look and sound like they are giving their all, Barry tucking his chin and singing in such a strong voice, Robin with his usual emotional voice also. Both with arm gestures appealing to their listeners. I can get up just as fast as I fall I can walk and run but I’ll never Thanks for another wonderful reaction. Happy Father's Day Chad.....we all have felt like we don't measure up to our own expectations in life as well as what other people expect of us and what we feel life itself expects us to become. I know I have personally felt that way at times and it's tough to juggle all of those feelings and thoughts of what can I do ....either different or better.....to be what is expected of me. Life is hard enough without feeling like you don't measure up sometimes. The Beegees once said in an interview that not all songs that artist write are about themselves or an incident in their own lives ....but in their case it can be songs about human nature and the trials and tribulations we as humans go through. But with this song .... I'm not sure if it is about them or humans in general.,. But whoever it is about and supposed to reflect.....it is a beautiful well written song .....as all of their songs are. It could certainly be a song reflecting upon their own personal tragedies and how they survived and the feelings that go along with that. The Beegees once said in an interview that they were very poor growing up and their dad worked two jobs and they sang at a car racetrack to earn money to help support the family....then their father quit his jobs and became their manager. I remember Robin saying that they would get a plastic trumpet or something like that for Christmas....and they joked about not having a TV so they watched the neighbors TV through the window of their house and had a remote and would sometimes change the channel....which really pissed their neighbors off . They were millionaires by the time they were teenagers. They quit school for a career when they were about 10/12......but they said they always had fun together. So this song could be a reflection of this time in their lives. Have a great Father's Day Chad and enjoy your time with your daughter....our children grow up so fast and time spent with our children is special and precious no matter what age they are.💕. Take care and I can't wait for the next reaction of the Beegees marathon weekend.

At this point in their career was a hard time, Barry once said they thought they might just be a 5-year group! from "67" to "72" the lyrics show this feeling indirectly as with the unreleased lp "Kick In The Head" the song "Jesus In Heaven" people might take that tune out of context & think they aren't Christians but this is not true, as the Brothers were struggling to find their footing in their music careers and they found it in 1975.

A personal speculation on the lyrics: being in a hard carreer period, maybe they were just asking to be let alone, away from all critics/advisers (kings and queens around my room...) who claim to know what's the best for them/ wich next musical direction to take ('then you know me very well 'to me is sarcastic). They know what to do (i ain't lost and i ain't searchin/ i can get up as fast as i fall/ i know i should be going somewhere), but people are too demanding (i can't change the world...). In the end the whole song could be a request to be free from various conditionings around...
