Most will never get that 6000sq.Ft mansion. Most people leave NYC broke or in debt due to the cost of living. If it were as easy as “let me spend a few years in NYC and then I’ll be set for life” everyone would do it. This isn’t the 19th century, you can network almost anywhere. As for the advantages she mentions, these are heavily dependent on where in NYC you stay. Manhattan? Sure. Queens? Not so much.

The PR of the city has affected me through the yrs. When I was younger, the "greatest city in the world" or "I luuuv it" publicity made me think the big claims were backed up by big proof. NYC is some ways is better today than it was 20-30-40 yrs ago. But I also realize opinions are a matter of "different strokes for different folks." And "YMMV." However, if NYC is the "greatest city in the world," than cities like London, Paris, Tokyo, Rome, etc, must be the greatest in the solar system. Again, however, YMMV

I moved to New York in my early 20s. I lived in the East Village & Bushwick. It was fun and thrilling at the time. It definitely had that energy everyone talks about and many of my friends are still killing it there. Now I'm pushing 30 and my perspective has changed. The romance of New York has faded for me because of other priorities - mostly being close to family. I miss NYC and still love visiting, but I wouldn't want to live there anymore. I guess they have a point when they say "demographics is destiny."

When i lived in NYC, if i craved something at 3am, i could go downstairs and get it. Here If i crave something, i have to wait til the next morning lol i loved off broadway shows, seeing bands play, pop up galleries, the high line, meat packing district, soho, Chinatown, Korea town, little Italy. I'm a doctor in a great, warm coastal city currently. I crave the intellectual and cosmopolitan environment of NYC. As well as the kick-ass food scene! It's admittingly quite hard to make the leap, though. I hear about physicians being over-worked and under-paid in the New York area. Starting salaries there are 20-40% lower than what I make now. And that's before the insane living expenses. Suddenly all the money I'd use for retirement is going towards living expenses, and I'd spend more years of my life working before I could retire b/c of that. Not to mention a more cut-throat work culture. Maybe if I find the right gig, I'd move for all the reasons you lay out. Otherwise, I very much enjoy visiting NYC!

This is exactly why I love living in NYC! It's always moving, and you can never run out of things to do. Walk out your door for a quick bite, a jog by the water, exploring a popup or just relaxing in the park to read. The energy of people exploring and doing their own things fosters a great feeling of excitement and you are only a train ride away from a different vibe and new experiences.

It's so funny how people compare living spaces without an ounce of context lol The idea that you can get so much 'more house' in another area is entirely irrelevant if the more house and other area aren't in line with your priorities and endgame! So it’s just a feeling then? A lot of these benefits she mentions, like networking, she could achieve by visiting the city and attending certain functions, expos, events, etc. strategically without actually living full time in NYC. For a lot of people, it’s the irrational and romanticized idea of living in NYC that attracts people to the city and that’s how people rationalize living there and putting up with the crime, cramped spaces, cost of living, etc.

glad you like NYC so much. my brother graduated from NYC and i have visited there for a few days. the most intriguing spot in new york state is where the jennifer lawrence movie "no hard feelings" was based out of specifically the hamptons beach community. believe it was called montauk. spending too much time in a concrete castle city is OK to visit but i need grass and trails and a ski resort to snowboard and a beach with waves to float on. thats my idea of heaven. i'll take comfort and learning as much as possible over "growing" any day

I think what NYC teaches me the most is to choose who you are friends with wisely. Not everyone is going to regard you the same way as your college friends. Stay friends/Hang out with those who have stable and sustainable jobs, responsible, and can lead you towards the good/right tracks - rather than those who just seem "cool" (even if being "cool" is so tempting sometimes!). Girls are so easily taken advantage of, so it is important to stay clearheaded.

Love that you mentioned crime. My wife and I are planning to move to Chicago in the next year or two and we - always - get the parents saying how horrible the crime is, when it’s not that bad and it’s largely media companies poking at Chicago. I feel like Chicago is a smaller version of New York because it’s very similar-a lot of people in Chicago are full of ambition or doing something really cool. And we’ll take a small “shoe box” for the ambition and opportunity over the home in the suburbs right now. Keep growing! We’re a little older than you and we’re hoping to get to your level 😂.

When are you going back to Brooklyn? When you do please be sure to visit the Four and Twenty Blackbirds pie shop on 3rd avenue. And try a slice of their Salted Honey Pie....trust me!

Just got back from the city, spent Thanksgiving in TS. My daughter's HS band marched in the Macy's parade. We LOVE NY, and as soon as she graduates, our plan is to move from TX to NYC. Bonus points to you for filming in Bryant Park while the Christmas Village shops are set up. It's such a pretty spot in the middle of "such a dirty city" LOL seriously, it's not THAT dirty! :) Great vlog as always.

Good for you young lady, the Big Apple is certainly a challenge and can be both exciting and confusing. I wish my youngest daughter opted for Manhattan after college, she decided to really challenge herself and spent 2 years working in South Korea and is currently working in Thailand. Don’t ever think u can’t learn more about other people and places, NYC gives u the option to stay in the US and still have that international vibe.

Great video and I love to hear people talk who truly understand NYC. Mansions in Texas are cool for people who like to stay home and drive to Target on the weekends. In NYC, you get a shoebox with the world right at your fingertips and endless places to explore. I have lived here my entire life and it never gets old. There are plenty of NYC haters which is fine because that means more city for me lol

I am in my 50’s. I lived in big homes in phoenix and the LA valley. I moved to downtown LA in a brand new condo. Smaller than all my previous places. I have connected with great people, loved all the arts and culture and the food experience has been the best. I would say live in a big mansion for your children to grow. Before and after your children. live in a big city for yourself as you never stop growing.

Your reasoning in on point. At 61, NYC isn't really for me, since I love my peace and quiet in my small town. But I just came from NYC, since my son lives there and he suggested I come for Thanksgiving (I was planning to visit him Nov 28 and 29, since he's off Mondays and Tuesdays, but he suggested Thanksgiving). Despite crime, NYC still has its charm. Oh my, it was crazy during both Thanksgiving and Black Friday! We had Thanksgiving dinner at Penthouse Korean barbecue restaurant Gaonnuri in Koreatown and omakase sushi at Sushi Blossoms in Chelsea. I had my hair done by my son (he's a hairstylist) but he told me not to tip him because I bought Thanksgiving Dinner. 😡 He also moved to NYC last year. He is accomplishing so much more now that he is there (he was already accomplished before that, but being in a small town could lead to stagnation. He needed to grow). We were fine taking the subway, except this morning, the Manhattan bound L train had people get off at Myrtle Wykoff and we all had to take the M, which also got delayed by a stopped train in front of it when it was already close to Essex. NYC belongs to the young and offers them so much opportunity. I'm looking at you and I must say that you remind me of a young Suhaila Salimpour or even her daughter isabella. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zn_JZ3Rur9qpgq8

I love your smile Taylor, you remind me so much of Jess from "Roots and Refuge Farm". The greatest advice I've ever been given was from, of course, my very own Maker, who quietly whispered to me in my spirit, to "Be led, not driven. " This piece of Godly wisdom has forever changed my life!❤

I’m actually trying to become a headliner at the comedy cellar 😂 As someone who lives there, you must have a list of ‘NYC hidden gems’. What would you recommend for someone visiting NYC for New Years (coffee, bars, etc.)?

You have singlehandedly seed the ✨idea✨ of living in New York in my mind. Being a newbie in project management here in Madrid, Spain (Europe) you've showed me that this capital is going to feel small sooner than I expected. Inspired by you, I'm working towards fill in the shoes when that happens. Thanks 🆙

Awesome Video @tayor, I agree with most of it as I have lived here for a long time (if texan says crime about NYC, let them know their crime rate is much higher...)! One thing you should look into is the skill development classes across the city! There's so much to do/learn, and the accessibility is pretty wild (think of anything and find a place to learn / workshop). It'll be a great addition to your video, and really might be in areas of your discomfort! Might help you grow in a direction you never imagined!
