I never did theater and didn't go to resteraunts(WHY NO CORRECT SPELL RECOMENDATION) with my class or group in varying events(unless you count my siblings as classmates when you're homeschooled 4 out of 5 days) but my ten year old autistic mind definitely caused a lot of pre chaos that my mom had to diffuse when I was out and about

Being a theater kid, I can say that it’s okay to be in the ensemble.if they cast you as the ensemble, that means they see you as a good actor in that role. They see your skills in that place.
@Acookie7374

Also in my experience when they cast you as ensemble it's either to give upperclassmen a shot at bigger roles or you were a dancer first and want you to develop your voice more so it's not a bad thing

As a fellow high school theatre tech person, this made me happy. Lots of actors that don't get big roles are like "ok I guess ensemble it is" and don't think about tech at all.

Recently, I had an audition for Chicago and I doubted myself as I was going for a main and there were some other amazing actors going for the role, before the cast list came out I immediately doubted myself. I did get the role I wanted but just to think I'm not the only theatre kid that went through that is shocking, especially while watching this.

The queerification of illy's channel is something I am so living for omg. "so much gender" was 10/10. Also, I'm in high school now and I've done tech for a few shows. There's something so heartwarming about the way our chaotic energy brings us together. I love going out for ice cream or whatever afterwards. We hit up coldstone after our most recent play like 10 minutes before closing and just chilled outside eating our ice cream and vibing.

Being autistic myself, it's nice to see Illy express herself in a way that she's comfortable with. Also, I can relate to a lot of what she says, especially the whole "trying only one thing and crying when it doesn't work" thing. Not that I'm a theatre student, but that mentality can be applied to a lot of other things for us as well. Keep your options open and your head high, everyone!

You know? Even when it feels like you wanna slap your past self by acting badly, I have felt that too, but I... think that may not be what you needed. Watching your videos and the things that happens in your life made me realize that, even when that doesn't justify bad actions, what you needed was a hug, you needed kind and supportive words. Not only from others, but from yourself. You needed more Mr. Hudsons in your life and I mean not just in theater clases time, and be your own mr Hudson

So I just did my first play, it was Bye Bye Birdie and it was amazing. I don’t care that I got chorus bc it had a perfect cast, crew, and directors. The house was packed all 3 nights and the atmosphere was like no other. I had a couple of lines but I was needed for those lines. I love what the director said on closing night, she said “It doesn’t matter if you are apart of crew or the lead you are important in this play” and it is true.

Man, theatre and clubs are the only things that i'd really want to go to American school for, but i'm in the middle of Asia with the craziest school program (and i'm also already in college). The closest thing to theatre were preschool holiday shows for parents to watch us deliver dances songs & random talents decided by teachers (and it wasn't fun). illy, I know you won’t see this but, I’ve had really bad stage freight especially when it comes to singing. I’ve been in my highschool’s theater department for 7 productions and not once had I tried out for a musical. This year it was announced that the musical was a production that I grew up with and still really love. I wanted to thank you for posting this video even though our experiences aren’t completely the same, this video was one of the factors that helped me choose to try out this time. Although I’m not sure if I’ll get casted, I’m still proud of myself for trying out and singing in front of other people. So, thank you!

I admire that you were brave enough to expose your less proud moments when you were younger. It's already scary to put your personal stories on a public platform, but it's even harder to show your less proud moments on top of it. It also shows that you learned and matured like anyone else when you acknowledge past mistakes. Feel proud you did what plenty never had the courage to do.

When i was in highschool every year we got the official licenses to broadway musicals so we could perform them. sometimes we'd perform it on a big stage and sometimes a small stage. One year we changed to a new teacher and she made us perform a children's version of a well-known musical. the children's version removed many of the most important character development songs. and when choosing that musical the new teacher also didn't think about the fact we had 3 boys in the class and a majority of the roles needed to be cast were male. the female lead even suggested we make it a genderbent version since we obviously could not fill the male roles. but yea whole musical went downhill.

The I got my first lead in my last show there, and then two weeks into rehearsals they told me they were going to go a different way and all of a sudden I was just a partygoer 🥲

In elementary school from 2nd grade, I tried out for many roles in plays and musicals. However, I never managed to break past getting a minor role, stuck in the chorus, with like, 3 lines. However, I always persisted, and continued to try out. It took quite a while, and I always kept the sort of optimism that I would land a meaningful role in a play. Even when I had to leave for a family emergency and couldn't act in that play, I always memorized lines, practiced and repeated. But one day, I managed to land the main role. This isn't supposed to be extremely cheesy, but I just wanted to share my personal experience. I was very lucky to get that role, and it was pretty satifsying after years of minor roles.

Growing up as a shy, autistic kid, I didn't feel comfortable being around people I didn't personally know, and was always worried about saying the wrong things without even knowing it. I only had a small group of friends, but I generally felt more comfortable being by myself. However, I always found comradery in the theatre department at school. I was passionate (still am) about the arts, and being around people with similar interests as me felt like I was part of the island of misfit toys; people who just "get" you without even trying. Being part of theatre taught me how to communicate with others, and to express myself in a creative manner. I only had supporting roles in high school, but I felt comfortable playing a character onstage. It felt like routine, I learned how to live as another person, and gained a sense of empathy for the said person I was portraying. It was basically psychology put into action. Now I'm part of my local community theatre, and I get to meet different people with different backgrounds. I've come a long way, but I'm still willing to push myself to learn more.

This reminds me of trying out for our inter house vocals competition which is a capella, first year I was so nervous I completely flumped it and I didn't even try second year cause I was still so embarrassed. Third year and brought the whole package, channelling Anapantsu's Friend's on the Other Side, and I was asked to do it again for the whole final group as an example of what they were looking for on stage. I was so proud of myself and I'm not nervous about that sort of stuff any more

I had the same feeling when it came to my choir auditions- I wanted to do them but there were so many people that I felt were “more suited” than me so I never really went for it… then senior year came and I was like “if I don’t do it at least once I’m gonna regret it” 🙃 so I forced myself to audition for a solo, I didn’t get it but I was still proud that I did it- so that 10 year feeling is so valid omggggg

My theater teacher, although she was great, outright told me she typecasted me as older, “mature” women in shows. The problem was that the shows she picked only had those roles as small background characters or not at all. The biggest role she gave me was Eudora Featherstone in Miss Holmes, which I loved, but that was it. Despite all my work, I wasn’t going to get out of her typecast.

They actually watched the movie but didn’t get the characters names (Penny, Amber, and Velma) Also it was really impressive that your theatre department got such a glow up Considering places like Bumf**k Nowhere, North Carolina (those are in fact her words, go watch their Christmas video if you don’t believe me) the arts are pretty undervalued compared to sports I would know, I live in a tiny town in Eastern Washington And despite being next door to the eighth wonder if the world, we didn’t have a theatre department Only the Missoula Children’s Theatre that would come by once a year (whose plays were super clumsily written it was painful preforming them) Also all of Batman’s sons were always Robin The closest would be Batgirl, Robin/sometimes Batman depending on the artist love interest And daughter of commissioner Gordon

I wasn’t in theater in high school but I was in band and I definitely have regrets from band. I was in concert band, which was the lowest level, for three years but I auditioned for symphonic band my senior year, which I got, but I wish I’d auditioned for wind ensemble, which was the highest level, instead. I also remember not practicing enough my first two years, which I think probably lowered my confidence and people could tell that I wasn’t practicing enough. But my worst regret from band was that I became close to one of my directors my junior year, but then, senior year, she ended up having other priorities, which I didn’t take very well, so I ignored her boundaries. And I also remember going on a band trip to Hawaii that year and having one day where I had to be around people besides her, to which I threw a fit and clung to her, so then she didn’t let me go to the luau that night. Yeah, that was tough, but I’ve learned my lesson. I would like to tell my BD sorry for what I did to her, but unfortunately, she works at a different school now, but maybe I’ll find her someday.
