I review my 2003 Mercedes CL600 and dish out my impressions on maintenance, ownership and depreciation. Thi is the twin turbo 12 cylinder car that has been overlooked too long!! We go for a drive and I make the case for the luxury GT cruiser to gain more prominence in the car world!! Gotta love this engine!!

My grandfather was a big CL guy. He had two that I know of, one being a 2001 CL600 and a 2010 CL550 4matic. He sold the CL600 to the guy who took care of his cars at his Vegas condo for $10 (he was based in Nashville and didn’t get to go out there as much in his later years so did it as a thank you to the guy). I inherited the CL550 from him after he passed last year. At the time it only had 43k miles and it has been an amazing car. I’ve only had it for the summer but have managed to 7k on the car and it makes long road trips a joy to drive. Great car and you don’t see too many of them on the road. Only even seen 3, a CL63 AMG, a CL600 “AMG”, and a CL550.

You are 100% correct on everything. Enjoy it brotha! I had the 55. In hindsight I wish I had gotten the 600. I just can't stand when people swap out the ABC for the coilovers. Complete disrespect to the car and it's designers and engineers. It is a major part or what makes the his car and its ride special. Too many people want to be the boss without paying the cost. -Vee, ('09 CL63)

I bought a 2004 CL600 4 days before this video was posted. Just found this video and your channel. I cannot stress enough how much I love this car and everything you say is true and more. It is a blast to drive around in. The one I bought had the suspension replaced with coilovers (to which I am actually happy about) and it still rides and handles great. The car not only looks timeless but is very comfortable to ride in. It is a rare car as well and I have yet to see another CL600 where I am. I have seen the Cl500's and even the CL55's but the 600 is elusive even while owning one. I am currently doing a tuneup on it and as you have stated it is not hard at all to work on. The only issues I have seen is the trunks failing which most are under recall, the suspension and the coilpacks failing. Other than that not too much. However, do not expect to own/drive this car and not pay to enjoy it. You will pay the Mercedes Tax. You have found an additional subscriber. Also I buy all my parts from FCP Euro with their lifetime warranty on most all their parts (I am not endorsed by them)

Bought my 2003 CL600 almost 3 years ago. ABC suspension is flawless. When the Mercedes DEALER service department tells you nothing is amiss with any part of the car, you believe them! Best car I've ever owned. I take friends and family for rides and most agree it is the best car they've been in. Thank you for the video.

Thanks Gary! Once sorted they can actually be pretty reliable vehicles. ABC system is not that bad and when it's functioning man does it provide an awesome ride. I consider it to be routine maintenance on the ABC which I don't mind. What I do mind are the design flaws like the cheap plastic timing guides on my Range Rover! Mercedes seems to have the least amount of these of the European brands. Enjoy the car. This one I'm sure will not be my last!!

@@cassidycarcave2781 Hi again. I have two Jaguars where the timing guides have been replaced. I've been a car buff all my life but never liked rough-riding, noisy "muscle cars" at all. Very nice to hear you explain to folks that comfort is a factor to some of us. I love going fast, really love it (when safe) but a person can do that in quiet cars with tons of power. My next project is restoring a 1970 Mercedes 280 SE which I've owned for 35 years, but wanted to have something to do in my "golden years". I had no idea they would be here so quickly!! Its definitely best car I ever drove and I drove many brand new cars including S class 7 series etc. The design of this car is so timeless and still looks really fresh and attracts alot of attention when on nice wheels. Abslutely love the quality of the interior and probably 1 of the best steering wheels oh man and that audio is insane quality. I purchased mine in the UAE as a survival vehicle for my two daughters, wife and myself. Anyone coming up fast behind you is no problem and a slight press on the accelerator and you are suddenly a kilometre in front of the speeders behind you. It blows the doors off almost all other cars on the road in the UAE, where people don't read speed signs. I wish I could have taken it home to Australia with me... The airconditioned seats also massage your back... Darn, I really miss my CL600.

Hey Robert thanks for watching and commenting! I could not agree with you more. There's just not many cars that come out of the factory with this kind of power that are attainable for most people. In fact, there's one on Craigslist here in Nashville right now that's a fixer upper that I am so tempted to take a chance on! Is it hard to import a car into Australia?
@robertchautardjensen6846
@robertchautardjensen6846 2 жыл бұрын
@@cassidycarcave2781 I suspect fixer uppers are often not worth the trouble, however they can be good as sacrificial parts for other better condition vehicles. For my money, I would go after vehicles that have been well looked after by its owner, negotiate a deal and then go over it in fine detail. My CL600 in the UAE had a defective water line somewhere in the engine and it blew four water pumps in two years. Then after fixing that problem, I parked in the new Dubai Mall and the concrete block at the front of the car park was just high enough to crimp the ABC hydraulic line and this cost me a new hydraulic pump which ended up costing me USD$5,500.00. I loved the ABC suspension system and would definitely own another Bi Turbo CL600 2005 to 2009 model if I can find one at the right price in right hand drive.

Well maintained and always garaged, except she probably never realized it needed motor mounts. MB dealer installed the mounts for $1,692. When this CL-600 was sold as new it didn’t have the AMG badge on it even on the “AMG SPORTS Pkg” only on True AMG CL has a AMG badge and this CL-600 is a regular CL-600 with just an option of sports Pkg and it didn’t come with “AMG” badging from the factory when it was built and then sold new at the dealership. Whoever bought it placed “AMG” badge themselves on the back of the trunk. Only CL-55 AMG V8 and CL-65 V12 AMG came with AMG badging. Your plain CL-600 doesn’t even have original grill and it has aftermarket rims that weren’t sold on this car back in 2003 or on any CL period not even AMG models from that era. Another thing: this era cars didn’t hold up well because of rust and air suspension issues that leaked and caused the car lowering. Previous generation CL was the state of the art cars that are still in high demand and generation after the 2000’s was a good one but this generation you are displaying is the worst generation of Mercedes cars ever made. And you’re are not a car guy, dude you are not even sure that Mercedes models did come with W12 engines, you had to guess about SL and S class.

Bought a 02 CL600 v12 base from auto auction and still putting money into it lol, changed the expensive coil pack that was out, alternator that was out, battery, power steering pump (ABC) and now it wants to smoke off and on...lmao didn't smoke before, so might have a fuel issue. The thing about these cars is that if you don't drive it, you are going to have leaks. It will break traction super easy though, 700+ torque.

Love your perspective on what you like about cars. People make a big deal of max speed of all cars. Here is my question to those people. Where can you drive a car 80 plus miles an hour with out losing control due to ok average road conditions. One dip or pot hole at high speed you are losing control. Don’t cart how good a driver you think you are. What’s you opinion on that statement. I do want a CL 600 V12 on my bucket list.

The 215 and 216 CLs are spectacular vehicles. I'm currently looking for a 6.2 CL63 and recently drove a C216 600 just to see what it's like - and promptly fell in love. The V12 just felt much better suited for such a massive vehicle. While the 6.2 V8 was a monster, very aggresive, it felt like it wanted to shake off the heavy body and eject itself out of the engine bay. By comparison, the V12 felt more... dense, I think perhaps due to longer gearing and the twin turbochargers. I would take the 63 for the incredible sound and upgraded handling/brakes, but the 600 for the creamy smooth delivery and the special interior. At this moment I can't pick between them.

I have a 2003 CL600 with the Renntech ECU upgrade and now putting out 625 HP and 745 Lbs. torque close to the CL65. Love this car but so scary to own as last year I took it to a recommended mechanic to fix the electric cooling fan not working. $4,000 later and the electric fan,radiator replaced. Only 55 k miles but the car is approaching 19 years old. Recently I started seeing some small drops of oil on the road/driveway but now its coming out much more and even in a small stream if I park in the driveway and then restart to move into the garage. Without lifting the car yet it looks to be coming from the passenger side front just behind the front bumper assembly or passenger side front of the engine. Does anyone have any Idea what this could be? Is there a separate engine oil cooler and where is it located? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Love this car.

Yes they are awesome but they're always one puddle away from a $6,000 repair :-) my guess is you have an ABC leak. The fluid for the hydraulic suspension. There's an ABC hose that goes from the pump on the driver side all the way across the front of the engine sort of underneath the radiator. It's a popular item to fail. That would definitely cause your leak. I'd start there. If it's that hose, it's a pain to take off but it can be repaired by a hydraulic hose shop if you're in a big city....good luck and thanks for watching!!!!

@@cassidycarcave2781 Well a month or so in, the CL600 is an amazing car, but we have a but. Once again, folks trying to fix on the cheap. I am having to retro repair all sorts, from cooling fan, gearbox, HVAC fan, entertainment amp, new tyres, snapped air filter boxes, it goes on and on. I have even repaired and reprogrammed keyless go, thats really good. But one thing I can not trace / sort is the RPM's wandering around when I drive at a contestant speed below 40 MPH. Not by much but enough to notice. RPM sensor, speed sensor, torque converter??? I just don't know. I have used the Mercedes service system, I have no drive train fault codes, except Air Intake Temp to high which I put down to broken air filter boxes, now fixed (improved turbo power as a result). Any ideas welcome. In comparison to the Bentley, no comparison. Two very different power houses delivering a brilliant drive in different ways. But they both suffer from poor quality maintenance and the headaches that come with that. Mercedes, not as hard waring as people think, Bentley same as ever. But both brilliant in their own way. My choice if I had to choose, today and right now, the Bentley (just). That might change tomorrow when something else drops off :-)

@@cassidycarcave2781 The fact that I noticed that the CL is the most maneuverable car at cornering speed made me fall in love with it and wanted to buy one. Even if it's just a game, it's enough to form some opinions. I drove it in 2001, and 20 years later it looks like this car is exactly what I thought it was. The coolest Mercedes ever made, the most beautiful Coupe of all cars and as I said the fastest and most maneuverable of those times. And the most maneuverable Supercar from that period is Mercedes CLK GTR, not Ferrari, not Lambo, not McLaren F1. I notice that Mercedes has the best direction and maneuverability and with a manual gearshift the GTR can beat McLaren F1 on a public road.

I'd love to hear what people say that have more experience with superchargers. Mine is mostly with the turbos...BUT...my guess is neither is "better" for reliability. @@jctecson you've probably seen my video on the s600. It's my daily driver. I love the car! I don't think the added turbos would increase the maintenance for a 2004 versus a 2001. Both models are incredibly complex and it will be the sensors and auxiliary systems that fail not the engine, transmission, turbos and such. Either car will definitely be orders of magnitude higher in maintenance cost than your 230. I would guess three or four times your annual expenses... Unless you can do some of it on your own and have access to Star Diagnostics. Don't want to be a bummer because I love the twin turbo V12 but they are time bombs and nothing is $500 to repair :-)
