for next time it's probably easier to prepare 2 metal I-profile bars at standard gauge distance from each other with endings under an angle so you can just place those on top of the tip-bed lorry and chain them up and then position them over the rails so the locomotove can just be pulled up or down the truck in one go after alighing the 'rails' to the actual rails.

Having visited the site before the railway was relaid, you understand my concerns when the massive trailer turned up. It was all rather good fun, worth the stress! It was made a little worse when they confessed they'd never moved a locomotive before!

Lawrie your comment about people not really taking notice reminds me of a friend of mine who's car was on the back of a recovery truck. Back in 2012 a friend of mine owned a car built under licence by MGM Studios UK. The car in question was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang GEN 22. (GEN 22 to distinguish her from the main film car GEN 11) She was used back in the 1960s to promote the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang & my friend bought her at Auction back in 2011. One weekend he was asked to provide the car for the Hansel of Film Festival. On the Saturday it was driven round from the Bo'ness Motor Museum to the Hippodrome by his friend Gerry. Because it was in Bo'ness on the Saturday Gerry could drive the car round (about 1 mile each way). On the Sunday the car was on display outside the Edinburgh Playhouse. I caught up with Gerry's truck on the drive back from Edinburgh to Bo'ness & my friend Gregor decided that the car ought to go through South Queensferry on the way back to draw attention to it. It had the desired effect as more people stopped to look at the car rather than the funfair next to them. 1 lad was gawping so much he fell off his push bike. The car's now up in Dundee (Dundee Transport Museum) & attracts attention there. Seeing a small RUSTON on the back of a Recovery Truck, well that would've been an unusual sight to say the least.

Awesome video. Great story. I am off to The North Norfolk Railway tomorrow for their 1940's weekend. I think it's great that people, such as yourself, preserve history. You have this locomotive, two fire engines, A supra, MR2, and even your little dumper, oh yeah and your tractors, all representing different areas of transportation and machines that helped shape the country. All I have are a few vintage bicycles. 1950 Triumph and a 1966 Raliegh Belfour, a Royal Enfield and a few others, not as interesting as the mechanical marvel in this video.

I think a Ruston like yours would be very handy on the - I think it's a work in progress - Poulton & Wyre railway. A society are reopening the line to Fleetwood from Blackpool. They're working on a 1960 Class 108 DMU they've managed to buy. It's a fair length of line.

I'm surprised the railway guys have not built a dedicated trailer moving these narrow gauge locomotives around. 7 imperial ton is 15680 lbs, add another 5k lbs for a trailer and you've got something under 22k. In the States we'd move that with a 1 ton pick up, you could find a commercial truck to borrow that has the same capacity.

This isn't narrow guage. She's standard. There are companies who have specialised trailers to move these things around. Mines just light enough so we can take it places without having to get specialist equipment. All very much has to be a lorry though.

Suprised you didn't have some form of rail on the transporter. When I used to assist with similar moves (when I was a lot younger!) we used to lay bullhead rail on it's side which gave some sort of support.

The little Ruston is looking marvellous now, far improved from when you bought it. I was more than a little bit OMG!! when I saw where the driver of the transporter had to reverse down to off load.....that is true skill to be able to drop the Ruston onto rails like that.

you know Lawrie i was re-watching this video and a stupid thought occurred to me.. apologies if this question is out of line but do you personally have insurance cover on the locomotive or is it covered by which ever railway it happens to be located on at any given point in time? if its you personally then my next question is this.. just how hard did you have to look to find vehicle insurance for a locomotive?

It's insured as part of the MSLRs cover. I don't have individual insurance for it. If it goes elsewhere its insured by the transporter and then at what ever railway it visits.

Thank you! It was a rather strange experience, the movement is not what one expects on the footplate. I have had one bash at Sirapite at the MSLR, though I've driven it several times as I'm a volunteer at the long shop too! It's a bonkers thing. Great fun!

It's basically permantly in gear. There should be a pin that comes out which should allow you to slide they drive gear out so it'll just sit there with the flywheel turning, but I've never seen it done.

Do you store it at the Suffolk railway and use it whenever you want for a fee or is it kept predominantly at your home if you have a line there? Sorry I haven’t watched all your videos yet. Mine was a very good price. Mines currently valued at around the 10k mark, though there are others available for less, like the Ruston 88 for sale at Sdjr Trust or one for sale at Bo'ness. Mine is lightweight and easy enough to move, but depends hugely on distance and hauliers. Mines based at the MSLR, where we have an agreement in place. Hope that clarifies things a little.... Probably not, didn't really answer anything there 😂

I remember when the ivatt 2mt tank 41313 went back to the isle of wight I had spent the last couple of weekends polishing it then I looked at the photos of it on the ferry and in their yard and it was covered in twigs. then when 46447 went for a gala it was de ja vu.

It happens a lot when moving things by road, Loco cleaned for journey, less than ideal weather, arrives in a state. Very disappointing for everyone. Especially after putting all that effort in!

i finally found your loco's holiday vid. so, it's a working holiday then. but, since it spends most of it's time now lounging about like a cat in the sun, for your ruston this would be a holiday. i've been wondering, how is it that someone who isn't independently wealthy actually come to own a locomotive? your other toys i can understand. i could have bought a fire truck from the 50's for $3500 usd a few years back, but had nowhere to put it at the time. but a locomotive, owned by a lord? i would think that would be a pricey bit o' kit.

It was a lovely little holiday, we got on TV, it was the centre of attention, and just gentle trundle up and down. Super stuff! As I've mentioned before, the Loco is basically useless to most railways, very slow, not that powerful, and lack of continuous brake, which massively impacts its value. That, and it would seem that Sir William took a liking to me. He liked the fact I really wanted the useless Loco, and we had a plan for it, and wanted to have it in regular use, so that's how. I was so amazed at the deal we struck I had to email the following week to confirm it, as I couldn't quite believe it.

@@lmm there was a business owner close by who had a narrow gauge diesel locomotive, some rolling stock, and about 1 1/2 miles of track in a loop on some property. he said it's worth about 1 mil. usd, but it is quite useless in the real sense. i was basing my question on that information. i'm glad you are able to own such a piece of history. i'm kinda envious to be honest, it's good to have friends in high places. you do know you have the best job ever, right? when you talk about your loco, i can't help but picture you as sir topem hat from tomas the tank engine.

My day job is a lorry driver, which isn't that bad - all the railways I'm part of is voluntary. The KZbin is an added bit on the side too 😂 I had almost bought a 48 I saw offered for sale before, but it fell through, in the end going to the West Somerset Railway. So years later I decided to create a list working where all the remaining 48's were situated. Sir William got in contact and mentioned his was for sale, and the rest as they say is history! Railway stuff is hard to value, I'd have said a million was wayyy off though

@@lmm i think that included the rails, plates and spikes. scrap steel was high at the time, around 300/ton. keeping it up and running was expensive. he eventually went bankrupt, and someone from out west bought the entire set up, and took it out there, right down to the wooden ties. he brought a crew with him, and they worked all summer pulling it all out.
