The thing I love about this is that all the gear looks used, like he actually uses it in the real world. So many videos on here with people showing their gear (bug out bags or whatever) the kit all looks shiny, brand new and most of it is still in the wrapper. This guy actually walks the walk unlike so many wannabes on here. Good work feller!

Thanks, yes it was used extensively while I volunteered with SAR, call outs and all field training. As of this time its currently just for back country hiking as I am not with SAR currently however I am considering reconnecting locally in new year.

QUICK question: Did I see you have a plastic zip tie on the trigger of your bear spray? I have never had to have that were Im at, but I would think it needs to be pretty available for quick use. How would you cut that tie off before you became bear food?

It won't pop out by pulling it out but slide sideways it's out in a flash

Where did you get the Tru Flare pen launcher from? i cant find a USA distributor. Thanks.
@riotwarrior

As I am in Canada it is available in many outdoor and sporting good stores. it is a combo bear banger and flare launcher.

@@Tom_Cruises Weird. I got a truflare launcher from their US website a few years ago, but now the website is down and replaced by some kind of websquatter.

I am not sure but I did get an email asking about the tracking card I show with the foot print outline. It is from a laundry detergent bottle I cut a side out of...after it was empty of course and made a generic foot print outline. Super simple and works well for what I do and how I do it....next...drill a hole in the book and in the card and have a small cord attached so I do not loos it in the field!

Watching your video and I realize you live in the Okanagan. I'm trying to get into SAR operations and am a wildland firefighter atm. Any input as to what my next step should be for getting into SAR?
@riotwarrior

SGTspazzo well where ever you are locate your local SAR team and then approach the team and ask them when recruiting tales place. Good luck with it it is rewarding .... However I at this time am on hiatus from sar for some time....

Extensive kit but I can definitely think of some ideas to maybe lighten up. Eliminate extra flagging tape, go with an aluminum ruler or soft measuring tape instead of full tape measure. Some stuff there looks like there are back ups for the back ups back ups haha. Redundency is great but think about the weight cost and your energy to operate. Just a few ideas. Thanks for what you do.
@riotwarrior
@riotwarrior 10 жыл бұрын
Tape measure is the smallest I can get that offers capability to extend OVER a foot print without flapping down into it. I understand what you are saying but that tape is NOT that heavy. YOU cannot have the tape droop into a signature print, preservation of print/sign/evidence is crucial, thus I am staying with that little tape, it's only 6 feet long... ;) Extra flag tape can designate different things, a safety barrier for example and a cut line along a grid search. Also if another member has none..I do...often the case. Yes I would think the biggest redundancy issue I have is fire starter, lots of various methods tried/tested and fully working. Least I'm not packing a bow drill...YET. The weight thing does add up, for example that kit with no contents weighs much more than an empty back, that's a big issue right there. One I'm considering that may lead to a change in direction, yet I still return to the vest. Earlier this year I had to hike up for 45 minutes after a Helo insert at 6000+ feet to track some lost hikers. They ended up hiking out after 30 minutes past our insertion and we had hiked down considerably, but the climb for 45 minutes outweighed the 4-5 hour hike down to command so up to Helo spot we went. Yes that was a tough go, very steep, post holing in snow 3 feet deep now and then, and ya I need to deal with some stufff, so I am. So far I've dropped almost 3 lbs off pack ...Nice! Thanks for the comments, and hope it's offered you insight to ground SAR. For more info check your local municipality or area for a group.

I definitely understand the choices on different gear. A lot of times it's worth the weight for its effectiveness. Thanks for the response and the video, I definitely got some good ideas from it.

It's always a work in progress, revamping the SAR gear to lighten it up. I'm always looking to multi task items, and make use of younger members (sherpas) when available lol. One thing I noticed was the zip-tie was still on the bear spray. For you it's the snake bite kit, for us up north it's the bear spray.

Nope and the balance is quite nice, once used to it, you can wear it for quite sometime comfortably. I'd like more shoulder padding and I'm looking at adding on a Molle padded hip belt instead of the plain duty belt it has now. Those would be quite worth while

Joe, this may be changing as I mentioned to a Vest with no back pouches and a pack combination, pack holds gear and so forth then the vest holds common use and quick access items. I'll create a new vid if I do make the swap
