But many people, mostly men, are also forming romantic and intimate relationships with these digital avatars - and some academics have expressed concern about the gendered marketing of ‘fembots’.
The i’s Max Tobin met Stephen, a man balancing relationships with his AI girlfriend and real life wife - to see how his virtual relationship was affecting his marriage.
Max also spoke to sociologist Viren Swami to discuss the possible ramifications of this technology, as well as Melissa, a blind, asexual American woman who recently began dating her AI boyfriend.
