I love custom diy fishing lures and jigs but I don't have a lot of time to do it. So I got a custom jig skirt making kit from Tackle Warehouse to make some. I have a secret jig color I love to throw that works in any kind of water especially clear to ultra clear lakes. Here is how to make your own jig skirt for fishing and the secret layer color I would recommend putting in any jig you are using to catch bass.

i started doing my own bass jig skirts late this summer. I'm a fly fisherman, originally, and a fly tyer, so I have a lot of familiarity and the tools for wrapping materials on a hook. I found a few things that help. First, and this is a bit wierd: personal lubricatant if the skirt material has much over 3 tabs, or 60-some strands. It's too much friction through that tube for the slicone pad material to handle and it can break. Instead of a rubber collar, try an O ring in like 5/32 (I think) . If you want to make more distinct layers, like for shad or bluegill jigs, you'll want to do something else besides the pull tube. You do the 1st layer or 1st 2 layers. Then put the jig in the fly tying vice. Now, you'll want to use another tool: the smallest size hair clip. This will keep the skirt drooping into your way and getting snarled under your tying thread. Get a fly tying thread bobbin and tying threat of "G" denier or AT LEAST 3/0. Then you can lay the over- or under- layer on the base. You will need to strongly torque on the wraps to hold the skirting. Wrapping around the fiber guard and half-hitching is tough. I can't explain it. I'd have to show you how to. Then touch the wraps with regular, thin super glue to keep the thread from backing out.

I completely agree with you. My favorite colors for jigs is magic also known as blue craw My favorite spinnerbait color is chartreuse/white Bkaded jig is black/blue But when it comes to jigs I feel magic craw best imitates many different forage well. Great video and tightlines 🎣 Also if magic craw is sold out but I need that jig my next color of choice is pb n j.

Be careful with the collars in that kit, they dry rot super fast. I recommend as soon as the skirt makes it on the jig either tie braid around it or wire tie it

I agree with you. Hand tied lasts for a long time. One of my pet peeves is the rubber collar.

Mikey, nice video. I like to see simple tackle hacks explained that most fishermen do not know. This helps with getting people out there and having a great time on the water. Also a little tip, I agree with the collar issue. I found a way to take care of this. Get some cheap upholstery thread. Once you have your skirt in place tie a couple loops with the tread. very simple and the skirt stays in place. This helps a lot when skipping the jig. Thanks, Man keep up the good work!!

I love that magic craw color. I'll mix it with regular green pumpkin too but it's super universal. I also find it works well in dirty and clear water and can imitate anything. Been tying my own for a couple years. Love it bud !

What a great idea, I have some jigs and spinner baits that have the skirts falling apart from setting in my boat. Instead of trowing them out I can pick up one of these kits and re-skirt them.I just hope the little girl next door to you doesn't watch your videos and see you stole her scissors. That is a killer looking color combo. I started making jigs this summer and its a blast. Really endless possibilities on all the color combos you can make. I'm like you, I don't like the rattle collars. TW has a thicker collar available w/o rattles that seem to hold up a little better. Going to try a few drops of olive oil in my collar bag to see if that helps extend the life of them. Love those scissors dude. Great content keep up the good work!

Mikey I started using thin copper wire years ago for spinnerbait and jig skirts. that way you never have a skirt fall apart from the rubber failing. I had a FLW Stren Series pro put me on it.

I'm so glad I seen this I run kids fishing group. I get baits to give to kids. Buying jigs get costing so I want to make them and maybe flies. To give to kids. I just lost auctions 200 bright yellow with little white man win for 17 jumped over me by 2 dollars I didn't get back on line time was watching 3 people auctions did win one plopped for 5 a man painted really nice. But wish ide won all 3 for 15 then been worth paying 5 shipping now have 10 dollar plopped but it's one kind unless he does nore. Lol. Love this video have to get the tool from tackle warehouse and skirts with rings from Amazon dicks has a metal tool. But no one has kits like you got so I have 3500 size boxes and making my own kit when the stuff comes in jig styles from Bass pro. Wish me luck.

Most collars do suck. I haven't seen one yet that won't rot. A good substitute is craft wire. Just wrap it around and twist it down tight.

Please show to the end. Ie attaching mono and a hook. So far, it looks like a long rubber skirt with a collar in the middle. Do you fold one side over the other? How do you insert the mono? Just push it in through the skirt collar? All this is totally new to some of us, and you are showing it as if we all already knew the rest of the operation. Why show it if we already know?

I think you're talking about how to tie The Jig to your line basically there's a small eyelet on The Jig and you put your line through it and tie whatever not you like

This is assuming fish or Bass can even see color??? I mean who really knows... I promise you it’s more movement and presence of the lure that makes the difference. Also I’m sure scent has an order as well. It’s all about timing and what the fish is doing at the moment you catch them. Lures are made to catch fishermen before fish, always remember that.
