Randy, I’ve fished the Carolina rig quite bit. I believe the fish are attracted to the clicking noise the weight makes. I have some 3/4 & 1oz jigs that were made specifically for fishing as the weight for Carolina rig, they have a short steel leader that you attach the leader to. The down side of them is they weren’t that great in heavy brushpiles. I typically fish 3/4 & 1oz weights, with 18” to 24” leaders and Carolina float (bullet shaped foam) on the leader. The float helps the bait come thru a thick brushpile or grass without dragging the bait down and foul the hook. I also use a 2/0 thin wire hook and skin hook the side of the worm or lizard. I use the 2/0 hook due to many of the fish being deep hooked and are easier to remove or clip the barb off to remove without hurting the fish. Lost very few fish.

Kids and dogs = life. Love the realism and authenticity. Another of Randy’s videos that I watch from start to finish. I feel comfortable sayin’ I have successfully avoided Carolina and A-rigs and until I become a tournament pro (no thanks), I’ll wear it as a badge of honor. However, more power to those that knock ‘em out with them.

There are some older guys on my home lake, Lake Allatoona, that throw a carolina rig if they are fishing a baitcaster and throw a shakey head if they are fishing spinning tackle. And nothing else really. Carolina rig is one of those presentations that works whenever. This was a really cool mod thanks.

I despise using a carolina rig, so I know the mental anguish of having to tie one on when the bite gets tough. However, instead of a jig, I add another 1/0 to 2/0 hook with finesse worm between the beads and brass nuts (cheaper than brass fishing tackle). I have caught several fish on that top hook and it's near the weight, so the fish prefer the worm.

I know this is your mod, but just a question, would you not turn the jig the other way for better dragging purposes? Also would you suggest this only after you discover the bass are eating your weight? as this is way less snagless. Thanks for the great tips and tricks.

Mikey balls did a video on this same type of setup but he uses a sliding weight brass weight that actually has a hook in it they're made down in I want to say around guntersville it's a special Carolina rig weight that has a hook built into it same principle as what you're doing just very similar I thought that was interesting I have experienced bass picking up my Carolina weight also I've never actually tried a weight with a hook in it yet
@N5KDA

Randy, when using a jig as your weight, I take it you were not throwing it around wood??? I'm in SW Mississippi and almost every lake around here was built in a heavily wooded area. I have enough trouble pulling the old ball and chain through some areas rigged completely weedless. Also, I have tried lots of jigs but I don't fish them much because I have yet to find one that handles wood very good. I thought the "Game Changer, Trash Master was going to be the answer, but the head design needs to be changed to get it to come through wood better.

I gotta see I believe this year is gonna be one of my top fishing years I’m trying to figure out if I can get the money together to get me a spot lock front trolling motor somebody office fission social media actually donated a Larance HDS seven they said it’s old but I can update it and I said if you’re a good fisherman buddy you can still using catch fish they said for one locate the fish then catch him so hopefully with your tips the modifications of my reaction beat that I made out of the Berkely Wideload it just recoils with two set hooks I need to be able to send you a video of a brother method and you rig and the Inu rig made me think and now I’m making all kind of baits after the crank and stein I actually took an a scatter rat took the plastic off and made a Colorado blade and a turtle blade and made it a spinner nail with two treble hooks awesome action I’m somewhat like a good tattoo artist that can take something that’s there and make it better I just wish that I had more friends that love to fish and friends that had more going for him in life some people work hard and still live month to month I think God I don’t have to live check to check I’m trying to take my best tracker make it into a nice one level bass boat I have it framed out have my seats sometimes I wish I should’ve studied session at the age of 20 instead of worrying about doing plumbing but plumbing pays off well that’s good decision but I love to fish there’s nothing like Hook in that large mouth
