My Simple Podcast Workflow from Start to Finish

This is how I create an audio podcast episode from start to finish. My goal is to do everything “on the fly” so that there’s little to no editing needed afterwards, which keeps the show fun and sustainable to produce!

What comes across here is a refined workflow that is repeatable and can be easily expanded from audio to video and beyond. My biggest takeaway is that I’ve been trying for years to get clients to understand that you just need to make it and keep it simple and this reaffirms all of this - and crucially I shall just send them the link to this video to make them see and understand that. Tom, you are an inspiration to me as I produce my own podcasts. I found my niche and am working it regularly watching it grow. I work for an equipment and parts distributor wholesale only. We have an established set of customers already but are always looking for ways in increase our outreach and serve them better. Our customers are service contractors who spend lots of time commuting from job to job. Therefore, I create a series of job related podcasts of interest to those in our business and promised to keep each episode under ten minutes. Perfect length for them to listen between jobs or while running for parts, materials or making deliveries. The impact has been amazing and we have gained new customers as well as increased sales to existing customers. Now I am looking for ways to improve and take our podcasting to the next level while having fun doing it. I love using my Rodecaster 2 and Rode microphones. Great audio is so essential especially since my listeners are driving while listening. Thanks again Tom for all your tips, techniques and product reviews. Rode owes you for all of my Rode purchases. Meanwhile, I am always anticipating your next video upload. I am always open to and looking for ideas as to how to get to the next level. Your ideas are welcome.

Great Video Tom!! So I have an older Macbook pro (2015) with 2 USB-A ports. I have 2 cameras. A canon 90D DSLR as my main, and a logitech c920 as my overhead (using Camlink 4k). These work great with ECAMM thanks to your videos. My problem lies with the Rodecaster Pro II that I'll be adding to my studio. Given that I only have 2 USB-A ports that I'm already using for my two camera inputs, I'll be forced to eliminate the overhead USB cam to make room for the Rodecaster Pro USB audio input. I'm aware that I could run audio from the Rodecaster (monitor out) 1/4 inch to 3.5mm into my Cannon, and then into the Mac via HDMI to Camlink/USB-A. This would leave me with the second USB-A port availible, however everything I've seen suggests that running audio out of the Rodecaster and into a camera mic input isn't the best way to go. This is why I'm considering going with an ATEM Mini Pro I could combine both cameras (TAO converter tor USB cam) into the ATEM mini and into my Mac and then the Rodecaser into the second USB-A port via USB-C/USB-A adapter. I was just hoping you could shed some light on what equipment is available (hubs,docs) that would allow me to use muliple cameras (4 max) with the Rodecaster Pro II and Ecamm. I'm not ready to upgrade my Mac yet so making my Mac Ports limitations (2 USB-A, 2 thunderbolt-2, 1 HDMI) work has been difficult to get info on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do have the Pro Version of Ecamm Live and i love it. -Blessings

I would definitely recommend looking into some sort of USB hub for your MacBook. You can likely add a couple of inputs that way, so you can use everything without needing to eliminate or compromise. I don't have any specific recommendations, but there are a lot of options out there!

Super great video! This is how I record my podcast (The Hecca Becca Show) as well. Very little editing and makes it seem more like a conversation. I record straight into GarageBand since I don’t have the rode caster but might look to upgrade someday. Thank you for your content!!

You can do either (depending on your royalty free music service). I used a song form Epidemic for ages, but about two years ago a friend recorded an original song, so I've been using that ever since.

Are you not doing any compression / leveling or metering? I level my pod in GarageBand and make sure it’s uploading at -16 LUFS. If the RCP2 doing that for you?

Hm. Recording in one take sounds pretty interesting to me tho. Mine used multiple takes, Usually from 10-15 or 20 takes. 😅 (Although I only got used to a video recording) And oh! About my recording "studio" room here. (So this is "some" kind of an off topic here, If you wanna read this) I've been making some changes to it since 6-7 months ago (And I kinda forgot about it, So it still remains since May 2023) So I think I'm gonna make some finishes to it before Christmas and in the next year, Cuz' I'm going to turn it into a content creator machine. (Not quite!) It's basically a consists "And a Mix" of my Reviewing table and a table for talking in front of camera. (I don't even sure about the podcast tho, So well. It's basically like what I said) But will see of what it's gonna be like for my new 2024 recording "studio" room. (Not gonna spoil too much lol. 😁)

I use Adobe Audition when I need to edit, but 90% of the time I do all of the processing in the RC- finding presents I like, or dialing in my own and then making a preset. That way everything is good to go as soon as you're done recording.

Hi Tom. how is the ETHOS: mic with background noise. Will it reject a lot on its own or is there a lot of post to clean it up. I am using the Shure SM7db now and they do a good job with my furnace and other noises in my machine shop.

Another great video. I’m watching a lot of your video using the Rode Caster. I normally use Restream for all my podcasts but I’m really thinking about getting the Rode caster and switching to just audio. Do you recommend somewhere I could buy a used one I don’t have 800-1000 to spend right now.

I don't have any used sources to recommend since they're always a little hit or miss in terms of quality and stuff. But if you're planning to only use 1-2 mics, then you could get the Rodecaster Duo, which has a price of $500.

The first thing I noticed with this episode as I was listening in the car is that the theme music seems "slower," did you change the tempo and pitch? I'm also curious to know why you don't just do this setup for your podcasts to give you both an audio and video version? And I totally agree with you on some of your peeves. Those B-roll montages irritate me because 99.9% of the creators who make them do them with no motivation or narrative - just a bunch of bouncing beans and pouring coffee. But I have to disagree a little. I do find things like the WGOPRO to be exciting because they're bringing some pretty awesome functionality and features that just aren't available on the more truly "pro" gear. I've used lots of Lectrosonics gear in my past life and would love to use them in the KZbin sphere but unless you really have a budget, it's difficult to make that make sense.

From my own personal experience, the RCP works with most USB cables. I’ve run it through quite a few pretty generic ones like this with no problems: geni.us/SiOoe I don’t know if that’s what Rode would recommend, but it’s worked for me 🤷🏻‍♂️
