I let my snake explore our living room right after we moved and he was so fascinated with two boxes laid next to each other. He climbed them, tried to hide under the flaps, got inside and used one to get onto the coffee table. Sometimes letting him explore also gives my youngest aquatic turtle something to check out if my snake crawls by the aquarium.

I use racks, I also use different hides, pieces of wood, fake plants and a day and night light cycle, and on a regular basis I move things around on them while I clean the tubs, I change the plants out, I let them roam around the room. They're also spacious enough for them to stretch out and look around and I get them all out regularly. I keep ball Pythons, they seem to enjoy some enrichment but hardly use any of it. On the other hand, my Boa, is super active, which is why she's in a large enclosure with hammocks and vines etc. Does she use it? HA! no, she doesn't she spends all her days on the bottom, under her leaf litter. I know this because she has a 24 hour camera. As for my view of this video, this guy effing gets it!

I swap my plants in my enclosures every week when I clean. The corn snakes get super excited and climb around and explore. My boa couldn't care less, but I catch her on the security camera looking around at night so I know she likes the new stuff.

I feel like much of the reptile community is constantly fighting over super minimalist water bowl only vs "you NEED to have a ball python in a 6 foot long enclosure with UVB or you're abusive." Its so beyond refreshing to see content that is not only fun and educational but demonstrates a clear understanding and respect for these animals AND their keepers. I don't keep ball pythons yet but I plan to use tubs and PVC enclosures all with loose substrate, multiple hides and fake foilage. I might implement switching out decor with my current reptiles too, thanks for the idea!

While I'm rambling on about how much I like what you're doing, I also think how you thank your patrons each video using the cards while you're still sharing info both looks very cool and also makes it clear that you giving thanks is not an afterthought, as it can sometimes feel if it's jammed into the end of a video in a credits section. Regarding this video specifically, who knows how many people you've reassured and how many snakes whose lives have been improved because of your non-judgemental, calm way of suggesting simple ways keepers can add enrichment activities to their snakes' environments? I also thought the bit where you got carried away talking about how awesome paper rolls are was hilarious; I watched that part twice for my own amusement.

Thank you! I needed to hear this after I ordered a 3 tub rack system last week that will be here in about 6 weeks. I had gone to the pet store and was just looking at the snakes they had just to look. I told the girl I was struggling with my glass enclosure to keep good heat and humidity and was going to be switching to a rack system. You would’ve though I told her I was going to keep my snake in a cardboard box. She said they’re not big enough, not enough enrichment, basically only good for breeders “if I HAVE to say something positive about racks.” But yet I hear all over that racks are actually like a big hide and they feel more comfortable, less vulnerable in a tub. I told her “well it’s ordered so it’s gonna be used”. Glad to see a video that supports racks even for people who aren’t breeders!

I've often wondered about this. There is no way just being in a dark box for days on end is doing anything for the snake. I have my BP in a big tub with hides on both sides. I put some sticks and fake plants all around as well as two water sources. I take her out once a day for about 30 min or so (except after she eats or is in shed ). She crawls around on me, my desk and in my hands. She seems to enjoy all the smells and stimuli ! I can kinda tell when she's had enough because she goes into escape behavior, so I just put her back.

My baby ball waits to come out just after I turn out basking light. Daily! No aggression, carry him around and let him explore the floor. You will notice a excited snake will flick their tongue quickly. My baby ball looks number 3.

@@GreenRoomPythons I see rapid tongue flicks when he knows he can come out, not so much when exploring. Like about an hour ago found him lying laid out under the light. @GreenRoomPythons3 жыл бұрын
@@skepticknowledge8457 yep, that's him quickly figuring out what that movement is and what has just changed in his surroundings. It takes them a little longer to figure out it's you (as compared to a dog or cat). Their tongue is much better than their vision at telling them what's going on - but it takes a few moments of rapid tongue flicks to discern what's going on around them. So if you're the one who brings him out, I'm sure he's all about it once he figures out it's you :-)

From my experience, the trend of thinking that a snake needs a huge rectangle cage should run its course. When you have kept ground-dwelling snakes in both types of setups and watched behavior of the same individuals in both setups, then it is easy to notice that the big roomy tall cage does not make the snake eat better or breed better or do anything better. In fact, for shy feeders, the tub does wonders. Perfect sheds all the time in tubs, more predictable feeding in tubs, more controllable temperature ranges in tubs. And you highlighted the formula for good snake keeping in tubs - enough room and stuff to crawl into/on with some changes every so often along with some out-of-enclosure explore time to challenge their peanut brains. I think the empty cereal box is God's gift to snakes. Thankfully, rack makers are starting to offer really roomy tubs more so than ever. And while racks are not cheap at all, they are at least 1/2 the cost per enclosure than any good plastic cage.

Great video with really good points dude! I will always hate racks and even most tubs. I'm a colubrid keeper so I have to admit that things might be different for more sedentary snakes, but as you said they still need new stimuli to inspect and think about. I believe that the lack of enrichment in the hobby is widespread animal abuse, akin to leaving someone in solitary confinement for their whole lives. Even in complex bioactive planted enclosures like I keep all my snakes in, they get bored, so im always switching things up for them, and giving them the most free roam time I can. Thanks for the excellent vid that will hopefully result in a whole bunch of snakes out there getting some interesting things to play with!

Yeah, dollar store is great for fake plants. Delilah is a pastel Freeway. "Freeway" is a combo of yellowbelly and asphalt :-)

I too, have used morning time to knock out some enrichment.

This is an amazing vid! I did an elaborate setup for Luciee and she loved it! I didn't the same thing with 'No Name Right Now' and she was terrified. I think it depends on the snake! Also....hooray Kent! Hooray Sign.....Oh yea I had to do a serious down-size with 'No Name Right Now' It's been almost 2 weeks in the new smaller, darker, away from everyone enclosure she seems happier...(I think) I mean she finally came out of her hide and seems to not care about me as much! Oh yea I put an old paper towel roll in my tegu's enclosure! HA she was just like that! "What is this?" Will it kill me? Can I push it? Can I eat it?....yea I took it out after I saw her trying to gobble it up...fun times...

Yeah elaborate enclosures definitely depend on the snake, but I'm sure she'll be into it once she's a little more confident.

You deserve a sub so here you go. I only have 1 snake and yeah he has a zoo type enclosure. But I have nothing against tubs with enrichment. Although I'm very big PRO UVB.. also every 3-6 months all new decor. I also have that sort off imbing ball when he's out. Ow yeah he's a 17months Male Cal King that I have since he was 6 weeks. I use reptibark. And yeah I use the plastic plants for reptiles and indeed they cost a lot. But the expos here are all cancelled. And a dollar store doesn't exist here in Belgium.😔

You probably have it in a video already but I haven't made it through them all.. yet. But the painted name rocks; I love them! Did you paint them? Did you get them from a fan? Did you order them on Etsy?
